CSR Campaign Stp, Lk, Wave Traffic Safety Kit INSTRUCTOR S GUIDE INTRODUCTION Backgrund infrmatin Each year, mre than 1.2 millin peple die in traffic accidents and cmmercial vehicles are invlved in 10% f these. That equals t mre than 3,400 deaths per day. Mrever, the Wrld Health Organizatin (WHO) estimates that, if nthing is dne, the number will increase by 45% by 2030. Safety. Our cre value Vlv has been fcusing n safety since the cmpany was funded in 1927. We have a clear safety visin: Zer Accidents. T reach this visin, we are cntinuusly develping prducts and systems that prevent accidents frm happening in the first place and ways f reducing the cnsequences if an accident des ccur. But we want t d mre. Stp, Lk, Wave With this Stp, Lk, Wave initiative, we want t make a real difference in traffic safety. We want t help children understand hw t act safely in traffic, andwe want t spread the three magical wrds Stp, Lk, Wave t as many children as we can. This message can make a life-saving difference. HOW TO USE THE MATERIAL This guide has been develped as a supprt t yu, as an instructr, t carry ut the Stp, Lk, Wave activity. T further assist yu, a kit with a number f cmpnents is available, described further in this dcument. In additin t the interactive stry yu are free t add ther cmpnents such as a practical demnstratin n the street mat and/r utside with a real truck, bus r large car. In ther wrds, yu chse the cmpnents that will best suit yur target grup and the time yu have available. Please be advised: Befre cnducting any training with children, ensure that yu have parent r teacher apprval, in writing if necessary. Be aware f, and fllw, all applicable schl safety plicies, and all lcal laws and regulatins. The training shuld be cnducted in the presence f the teacher, r parents. Cnduct the training with the children in a safe way, being particularly mindful f surrunding vehicles r traffic. Limit the training t raising awareness f the imprtance f the stp-lk-wave message, and d nt include any ther messages, even thse that may relate t rad safety. TARGET GROUP The main target grup fr this activity is schl children, ages 6-10. If the children are lder, yu can still use all cmpnents in the kit but yu will want t adapt the level and language t suit yur target grup. The stry includes basic facts abut trucks (what they d and hw big they are), it explains that the driver might nt always be able t see yu due t limited visibility and clarifies hw t best behave in varius traffic situatins. The stry is tld by yu (see interactive stry ) and visualised thrugh a PwerPint presentatin. T bring the stry t life a mix f phts, illustratins, sund effects and animatins are used. T further engage the children, the stry has been made interactive. Therefre yu, as the narratr, will cntinuusly ask the children questins t mve the stry frward. In ding this, the children will need t think fr themselves instead f being passively fed the infrmatin. The questins t ask and when t ask them are clearly described in the script. T mve alng in the stry yu click t the next slide when yu are ready. With each slide, the animatin and sund will lp until yu are ready t mve alng. T experience the full stry, make sure t have the necessary prjectin and sund equipment. In the unfrtunate event f having a difficult time dwnlading r pening up the PwerPint yu can fllw the instructins fund in this dcument (see Instructins t munt films fr interactive stry ). If yu are still experiencing difficulties after ging thrugh the instructins r if yu d nt have a sund system and/r prjectr available there is a simpler secnd versin f the stry available. Street mat The purpse f the street mat is t further emphasise/develp the main messages f the interactive stry. Use the mat with a ty truck and Playmbil figures t shw examples f dangerus traffic situatins and hw t handle them. A recmmendatin n hw t execute this exercise is available belw (see Traffic situatins t demnstrate n street mat ). Yu will need t print/prduce the street mat prir t the activity. The final artwrk is available fr dwnlad as a separate file. It can be printed n thick vinyl (apprximately 900 g/sqm), r if yu wuld like a budget versin f the mat yu can print it n fur A3 size papers, taping them tgether t make ne full size mat. It is recmmended t use ne truck as well as at least tw figures n bicycles, tw pedestrians and ne car. Driver s licence T emphasize the main message t the children, yu can give them a driver s licence at the end f the training. One side f the driver s licence shws the three magical wrds, Stp, Lk, Wave, and n the ther side children can add a pht r draw a picture f themselves and fill in their persnal details (name, surname, date f birth, date f issue and signature). Yu will need t print the driver s licence prir t the activity. Final artwrk is available fr dwnlad. Giveaways If pssible, hand ut giveaways at the end f the interactive stry. Examples f giveaways are bks, reflectrs, safety vests r similar traffic safety items that yu can rder frm Vlv Merchandise. Nte that at the end f the stry the main character, Tim, delivers a brwn bx t the class with smething in it. If yu have n giveaway t hand ut, this slide needs t be adjusted. Outdr exercise If pssible, have a real truck, bus r large car parked in the schlyard fr hands-n demnstratins f visibility limitatins t stress the imprtance f making eye cntact with the driver t ensure yu are seen. It is best t give children the pprtunity t get int the driver s seat and experience the visibility first hand. TRAFFIC SITUATIONS TO DEMONSTRATE ON STREET MAT Driver visibility It is imprtant fr the children t knw that even thugh they see the truck, the truck driver might nt see them. Place the Playmbil figures in different places n the street mat, accrding t the image belw. Ask the children questins abut the different psitins and the driver s visibility. Pint ut that the driver must lean ver and use the mirrrs t see all the peple n the mat. The mst difficult peple t see are the three peple in frnt f the truck. The persn clsest t the cab n the right side f the truck is als difficult t spt fr the driver. The tw peple furthest back have the safest psitin. Right turns Talk abut ne f the mst cmmn accidents between a truck and a cyclist: which happens when the truck is turning right as in the image belw and the cyclist is unseen. Demnstrate the truck s wide turning radius when turning right. The truck cannt make a right turn frm the right curb, s it will mve straight int the intersectin befre starting t turn. This can create cnfusin, as it might lk like the truck will keep ging straight and when it suddenly turns it creates a dangerus situatin fr the cyclist next t the truck. Hwever, the driver culd have frgtten t turn n the indicatrs, s infrm the children t always stp at intersectins and wait until the truck has passed befre they mve n. In many situatins the truck is bliged t stp by law but it is always a gd idea t be extra careful and stp as sn as they see the indicatrs blink r the truck turning. The children shuld stp behind the trailer t make sure they d nt get in the way f the truck. The magical wrds STOP, LOOK, WAVE Remind the children that if they are abut t crss a street they shuld always use a pelican crssing r zebra crsswalk. They shuld STOP cmpletely. They shuld LOOK arund carefully. T the left, then t the right and then t the left again. Remind them t never enter the rad if a vehicle is appraching. If a vehicle stps, children shuld seek eye cntact with the driver and WAVE t him r her. The child shuld then wait fr the driver t wave back befre he r she can crss the rad safely. This, t ensure that the driver has nticed them. Explain t the children that there might be smaller vehicles appearing frm behind the larger vehicle n a street with mre lanes ging in the same directin. There might als be vehicles cming frm the right, in the ther lane. OUTDOOR EXERCISE SCHOOLYARD This exercise requires tw instructrs ne t guide the children inside the truck, bus r large car and ne t guide the children utside the vehicle. In additin, a schlteacher shuld participate in the exercise. T get started, yu will need: One truck, bus r large car Fur cnes If yu have a truck r bus yu will need ne stl/set f small steps t facilitate climbing int and ut f the vehicle Make sure everything is in place befre the activity begins: The vehicle is psitined in a clear area s that yu can safely walk arund it. The cnes must be psitined exactly at the limit f each area f visibility, see illustratin belw. The psitins must be verified frm the driver s seat in the cab. If the driver can see yu standing at ne f the cnes they are psitined crrectly. The cne placed behind the driver dr is placed there fr the children t line up alngside the vehicle befre getting t climb up int the driver s seat. Nw that yu are ready: Divide the class in grups f six and ask tw f the grups, i.e. twelve children, t fllw yu utside. (Remaining grups shuld wait fr their turn inside.) Once utside, give a shrt intrductin explaining that yu will nw take a clser lk at the vehicle, find ut where the visibility is mst limited and practice hw t seek eye cntact with the driver. Briefly g thrugh the type f vehicle displayed (length and weight with and withut lad if it is a truck) and ask ne grup f six t stand in line beside the driver s dr and the ther grup f six t jin yu fr a walk arund the vehicle. Ask the schlteacher t stand by the driver s dr t help the children enter and exit t make sure n ne trips, falls r jams a finger in the dr. Emphasise that, fr safety reasns, it is imprtant that they pay attentin t all instructins. Inside the cab Allw tw children at a time t enter the vehicle. Once they are settled behind the steering wheel, the in-cab instructr briefly explains the cntrls and asks the children t lk fr their friends in the windws and mirrrs. Make sure t pint ut the cnes and explain the areas f limited visibility. When the grup that remained utside has made their way arund the vehicle, ask the children inside it t exit reminding them t climb ut backwards. After that, the next tw children in line enter the vehicle. Als allw the schlteacher t climb int the truck, bus r large car. Outside the vehicle The grup shuld take ne turn arund the vehicle fr each pair that is inside (i.e. three turns in ttal). While walking, repeatedly ask them if they can see their friends inside the vehicle and remind them t seek eye cntact thrugh the windws and mirrrs. When they see their friends ask them t wave. Make the fllwing stps while walking arund the vehicle: In frnt f the vehicle At the plastic cnes At the rear wheels Behind the vehicle Make sure they understand where the dangerus places are (the lcatins that the driver has difficulty t see) and emphasise that yu shuld never stand there because yu are less likely t be seen. After three turns arund the vehicle, the grup walking arund switches places with the grup that has been inside the vehicle and the prcedure is repeated. In general, the activity shuld nt take mre than 20 minutes (i.e. when bth grups and the schlteacher have been inside and utside the vehicle). PREPARATION Preparatin is key t a successful activity. T summarise the actins that need t be carried ut befre the Stp, Lk, Wave activity, use the checklist belw as a basis and cmplement it with anything that is relevant t yur situatin. Plan the visit tgether with the schlteacher, i.e. explain the cntent f the activity and ask fr advice abut the difficulty level. G thrugh the timing and bk an appintment. G thrugh the interactive stry (PwerPint slides and script), s that yu are cmfrtable and familiar with the cntent. Depending n the target grup, make necessary adaptatins t the script. Plan what traffic situatins t demnstrate n the street mat, if used. Examples f situatins t discuss will be fund in this dcument. Lk fr the title Traffic situatins t demnstrate n street mat. Check if yu can get a truck, bus r large car fr the visit. If s, plan the utdr exercise and g thrugh the instructins tgether with a c-instructr and schlteacher. Make sure yu have the right equipment t shw the PwerPint presentatin. Dwnlad the separate film r films frm the same place where yu gt this Instructr s Guide (Vlvtrucks.cm, Market Tlbx r Vilin) 2. Save the dwnladed film/films in the same flder as the presentatin n yur lcal hard drive 3. Open the presentatin in PwerPint 4. Lcate the slides with film: 3, 4, 6, 10, 17, 18, 19, 24 5. Remve the ld film (the ne that desn t play as it shuld) by clicking n the picture in the slide and pressing delete 6. T remunt the film, start by clicking Insert" 7. Then click Vide" 8. Brwse and select the film yu have dwnladed (and placed in the same flder as the presentatin) 9. Click Insert t embed the film in the presentatin 10. Adjust the size f the film bx t fill the entire slide 11. Make sure that the film has the right settings by clicking Playback. The fllwing settings shuld be used: Play - Aut Play in Full screen Special additinal settings fr film n slides 3, 4, 19 and 24: Repeat until click/sund stps 12. Save the presentatin Test-run the presentatin t secure that it wrks prperly. If mre films need t be remunted, fllw the same prcedure. If yu after ging thrugh the abve instructins yu are still experiencing difficulties, use the simplified versin f the stry, withut animatins r sund.
