The 4-H would like to have a float again this year at the 4th of July Parade in Belton. We are asking for volunteers and 4-H members to step up and help with the float this year. We will be having a meeting on May 25 th at 6:00pm in the CEO. If you are interested in any part of the 4-H float, please come to the meeting or let me know you are interested. (This even includes if we would like to have horses!) If no one shows, 4-H will NOT have a float this year!

Page 2 The recordbook is a great way to keep records for your 4-H career and to be ready for scholarship forms. It also is great because you can apply for awards. Great NEWS! If you are a new member doing a recordbook, there are forms to use when plugging in your information. There are also suggestions and tips for each section to help you fill it out. To get these forms, please go to the Bell County 4-H Website, (Go to Bell County Extension Website: http://bell-tx.tamu.edu and click on Bell County 4-H Website), and then click on Recordbook Forms under the forms and publications Section. If you are feeling confused or lost, you can make an appointment to meet with Micah, just call the CEO or email her at: mlkarber@ag.tamu.edu Here are a few dates to remember with your recordbooks: May 3 rd : Awards Applications Deadline (If you are planning on doing a recordbook and want to apply for the award, this is the deadline for awards not for recordbooks) May 3 rd : First Draft of Recordbooks Due by email: mlkarber@ag.tamu.edu If you would like Micah to look at your recordbook to make corrections or give feedback, you can email her a copy of your book. It does not have to be complete. June 21 st: Recordbooks Due into Extension Office July 8 th : District Recordbook Judging Ellis County-, if you are a parent interested in judging District Recordbooks, please let Micah know! Bell County 4-H Ambassadors Applications for the Bell County 4-H Ambassadors program are being accepted at the CEO. If you are interested in becoming an Ambassador, the requirements are: Be at least 14 years of age as of August 31 on the year of application. Example: the 4-H youth must be 14 on August 31, 2010, to be eligible to be a 4-H Ambassador for the 2010-2011 4-H year. If a 4-H youth is 13 at the time of the application deadline in May, they may still apply if they will reach their 14 th birthday before August 31 st. Must have been a member of 4-H for a minimum of two years at the time of submitting the application. (Exception: May apply if less than 2 years but acceptance will be based on their involvement the previous year and the number applying for ambassador positions the current 2010-2011 year. - A recordbook submission from the previous year 2009-2010 year may also be asked of if applying). Acceptance will be depending on Advisors and/or County Extension Agents. Submit a complete application, due on May 3, 2010. A formal interview will be given after all applications have been submitted. Members will be notified for interview times. Interviews will be formal dress. (Interviews are set for May 19-20) Meet all activity requirements by the application deadline (sometime in June) of the current 4-H year to be considered for renewal.

Page 3 NOTICE: All 4-H members applying for awards (Gold, Silver or Bronze Star; Rookie, Honor Roll, All-Star Letterman; Danforth or Outstanding Community Service, must submit the appropriate paperwork and applications on May 3, 2010!!! Award Interviews will be on May 19-20, 2010 at the Bell County Extension Office. Record books for county competition will be due June 21, 2010. Awards age based on age as of August 31, 2009. You do not have to complete a recordbook for all awards. Some awards such as the Rookie, All Star, Honor Roll, and Letterman do not require a recordbook. ALL AWARD APPLICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE ON THE BELL COUNTY 4-H WEBSITE: http://bell-tx.tamu.edu/ Click on Bell County 4-H Website then 4-H Awards. OUTSTANDING LEADER AWARD: The Outstanding Leader Award chosen from the 4-H member requires an essay no longer than 1 page. The ESSAYS ARE DUE AUGUST 1st but may be turned in at any time during the 4-H year! The essay should include the following: Date Name of Person Making Nomination Leader Nominated Why do you think this leader is an outstanding leader? What does this leader do that is outstanding? Examples: Teaches others new projects, takes 4-Her s on tours, leads club, etc. How has this leader helped you? How has this leader helped others? CLOVER KID FAIR Clover Kids are budding 4-H members ages 5-8 years old who are enrolled with a community 4-H Club. The Clover Kid Fair is a chance for them to participate in a fair just for Clover Kids and show what they have been earning! This is a great opportunity for them to become more familiar with what to expect as a real 4-H member down the road. The event will be on May 8th at the County Extension Office from 10am to 1pm this year. All parents and family members are welcome to attend. Youth can enter Food, Textiles, Creative Arts, Photography, etc. (See entry forms for all entries.) At the end of the event, residents and guests are able to sample the baked goodies. Clovers need to provide enough for samples. Entry forms are due at the County Extension Office by May 3, 2010. Entry forms can be found on the Bell County 4-H Website. (Go to Bell County Extension Website and click on Bell County 4-H Website on the front page). For more information or if you would like to help, contact Barbara Wood at 939-0226. This is not a competitive event. Each clover kid will receive a participation ribbon for each entry. There are no entry fees.

Page 4 COOKIES COMMUNITY SERVICE! Bell County 4-H uses the Belton Methodist Church for many of our activities and events at no cost to us. Now, it is our time to give back! The church is asking the 4-H members to make cookies for their event on May 8th, from 10am-1pm. We are asking that you if you could help, we will need cookies made and put 2 cookies in a ziploc or small bag. We will attach a 4-H sticker to each bag. We ask that you deliver them by Friday, May 7th at 5pm. Earlier the better that day! Remember this will help our community and help the Church who donates their facilities for FREE for our programs! If you would also like to help with passing out the cookies on the day of the event, please let me know or if you would like to help with putting stickers on the bags on Friday, just let me know! This is great community service for your recordbook! Youth Leadership Program We will be starting a new public speaking and leadership class in May for the Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program. Participants must be 12 before August 31, 2009 to participate. The fee for the program is $10 which includes your booklet, project pin, and some meals/snacks during the program. Only 15 people will be accepted into the new class and it is first come, first serve. Please call the Extension Office to sign up. You will be sent an email if you are accepted. The first meeting will be on May 10, 2010 at 6pm, at the Office. Meetings will probably be on Monday or Tuesday s during May and various times during June. Safety Day-Volunteer Opportunity! Safety Day will be held in Killeen at the Convention and Civic Center on May 11 th. If you are interested in helping take pictures or do small errands and help at the Safety Day, please email Micah at mlkarber@ag.tamu.edu. You must still have days at school to take off and must be eligible. If you want to help, please let us know by May 3, 2010. Bell County 4-H Management Advisory Board Meeting We will be having a MAB meeting on May 19 th at 6pm at the CEO. This meeting will be a major meeting to vote on Bylaws changes and vote on the budget. There will also be a 4-H update to help club managers notify the members. We require ALL CLUB MANAGERS AND ASST CLUB MANAGERS TO ATTEND!!!! We must have over 50% of the clubs to vote from each of the clubs. If you cannot attend, you MUST find a replacement from your club to represent you at the club meeting! Each club is allowed a maximum of 3 votes.

Page 5 2010 Youth Range Workshop, June 20- June 25. For more information, contact the County Extension Office. You need to APPLY NOW to get a spot. First come first serve on applications. 2010 Bell County 4-H Youth Photography Workshop When: June 21-22, 2010-8AM to 4PM Deadline for registration: June 7, 2010 Where: Bell County Expo-Assembly Hall Registration starts at 8AM to 9:00 AM Fee: $10.00 a day for each person Lunch will be provided. Bring a camera and film to practice taking pictures. Any questions call the Bell County Extension Office at 254-933-5305 or 800-460-2355 ext.5305 Recreation and Leadership Day Camp July 19 will be the recreation and leadership day camp for Bell County. Sessions include teamwork and leadership games, learn about your personality games, public speaking, and recreation games. The workshop will be held at the County Extension Office and will be held from 9am-2pm. Cost for workshop is $5 or 10 4-H Bucks and RSVP must be made by July 12th. Lunch will be included! The leadership workshop is open for 4-H members from ages 9-18. Clover Kid Fun Day Date: July 22nd Time: 9am-12pm Location: Bell County Extension Office Age: The Clover Kid fun day is for all clover kids from ages 5-8 years of age. If the kids are going to be 5 before August 31st and not 9 by August 31st they are invited to attend. This will be a 4-H fun day for clover kids. They will be doing fun food snacks, arts and crafts, and learn a little bit about 4-H. It will be a lot of fun!!! RSVP by: July 12th

Page 6 Turkey Orders Any 4-H exhibitors who plan to show turkeys in 2010 at the Bell County Youth Fair, Houston, San Antonio, or Star of Texas Fair, must order birds no later than June 4, 2010. Birds must be ordered in multiples of 5 and each exhibitor or family may order no more than 75. Cost of the birds will be $3.50 each. For more information, contact Pam in the Extension Office at 254-933-5309. BUYING 4-H PROJECTS FOR THE STATE FAIR of TEXAS Any 4-H members who plan on showing at the State Fair of Texas and need help locating or selecting a project such as a lamb, goat, barrow or steer, should contact Randall Rakowitz at 254-933-5305 before May 14 th. He will be glad to assist you in the process of locating and helping you to select your animal(s). Remember, we will validate these animals in June, so do not delay in securing your project. Steer Validation Steer validation for 4-H and FFA members will be held June 22, 2010 from 4-7 p.m. at the Bell County Expo Center. All exhibitors who plan to show at the State Fair in October, the Bell County Youth Fair, or any Major Livestock Show in 2011, must validate your steers on this day. A parent or guardian must be present to complete paperwork. This will be held June 22, 2010 at the Bell County Expo Center from 8:00-8:30 p.m. Anyone planning to show a lamb, goat, barrow, or steer at the State Fair of Texas must validate these on this day. Also, remember that exhibitors must also enter the State Fair in August through Randall Rakowitz at the County Extension Office or with your Ag Science teacher.

Page 7 Veterinary Science Day Camp This camp is back by popular demand! The fist group that attended had a blast and can t wait for this year s fun time! Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a veterinarian and help animals every day? This fun and exciting camp will be held August 9-11, 2010 at the Bell County Expo Center. Participants will explore what it takes to get to vet school, learn about the 4-H veterinary science project, get to see live veterinary procedures, administer medications to live animals, and meet local veterinarians and vet technicians. 4-H members will also play fun games relating to veterinary sciences, meet other 4-H members from Bell County and complete an individual project, and team projects on veterinary science. The camp will run from 7:30 am-12:30 pm each day and includes lunch, refreshments, prizes and a cool t-shirt. The camp is open to 4-H members 8-19 years of age. Cost is $30 per person and registration is due no later than July 2 nd. Come be a part of the excitement! For more information or to volunteer to help, contact Randall Rakowitz. This camp will be held July 5-6 in Kerrville. A camp for parents and kids! Come learn from some of the most successful people in the show goat business. Selection, feeding, fitting, exercise, clipping, anatomy of the goat, and showmanship are just part of the two-day sessions topics. For more information see website www.showritecamps.com. The date for this year's camp will be July 16-18, 2010 for the lamb camp & July 23-25, 2010 for the goat camp. Page 9 4-H Banquet and Slideshow The 4-H Banquet is set for September 11, 2010, so please mark your calendar. The banquet cost will be FREE. We also need pictures for the slideshow. Pictures can be emailed to mlkarber@ag.tamu.edu or burned on to a CD or flash drive and dropped by the Extension Office. The last day to accept pictures will be August 1st. Pictures are for the slideshow which is a great opportunity to show what clubs and 4-H members have been doing all year.
