UTSA Men s Basketball Game Notes Scouting Southern Miss: Southern Miss will look to bounce back on Thursday after dropping back-to-back games (at UAB/at Middle Tennessee)for the first time all season. The Golden Eagles will be happy to return home to Reed Green Coliseum, where they are 11-0 this season and 25-2 under second-year head coach Donnie Tyndall. The Southern Miss offense features a balanced scoring attack with six players averaging at least 6.1 points per game and three with at least 10 points per outing. Heading that group is 5-foot-11 senior guard Neil Watson, who is averaging 11.8 points, 3.9 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 40.4 percent from the floor. Meanwhile, forwards Michael Craig (11.5 points/7.5 rebounds) and Dave Boardingham (10.3 points/4.6 rebounds) help the Golden Eagles average 72.5 ppg overall and 71.5 points in Conference USA action. Southern Miss leads the league and ranks 29th in the nation by allowing just 63.2 ppg on the season and it is permitting 64.6 ppg in C-USA action. In addition, the Golden Eagles rank eighth in the nation with 218 steals on the season. Agusi went 7-of-10 from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers, and seven free throws for his highest point total since a season-best 28 points against Cameron on Dec. 31, 2013. Jordan Sims added 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and 3-of-5 from behind the arc for the Roadrunners (8-16, 4-7 C-USA), who claimed the inaugural meeting between the schools. UTSA shot 42.9 percent for the game and held a 47-39 rebounding edge, thanks in part to a game-high 10 boards from Edrico McGregor. UTSA built a 12-point halftime advantage with a 13-0 run over the final 4:35 of the half and allowed a season-low 16 points in the first 20 minutes. The Owls threatened late in the game, but Agusi scored eight points in the final two minutes to help secure the victory. Series History: UTSA and Southern Miss will meet on the hardwood for the first time. The Golden Eagles are one of seven Conference USA schools (Charlotte, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Marshall, Middle Tennessee and UAB are the others) that the Roadrunners will face for the first time this season. The Roadrunners are 3-3 against that group so far this season with wins over Charlotte, Florida Atlantic and Marshall in their first meetings against those squads. Man in the Middle: Edrico McGregor turned in a career-high 16 points against FIU last Thursday as part of an impressive stretch for the 6-foot-7 center. After reaching double-figures three times through the season s first 16 games, the Nassau, Bahamas native has totaled at least 10 points in four of his last seven contests. During that stretch he is averaging 11.0 points and 7.6 rebounds and is shooting 64 percent (32-of-50) from the field. Against the Panthers, McGregor went 6-of-8 from the floor with four free throws. In C-USA action, McGregor is shooting 62 percent, which ranks second in the circuit, while his 6.8 boards in league games ranks 10th. Additionally, his 2.91 offensive boards per C-USA game ranks fourth. For the season he is averaging a career-best 7.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 62.4 percent. Home Sweet Home: The Roadrunners won four straight at home from Dec. 31-Jan.30, including three Conference USA matchups. In its three C-USA wins, UTSA averaged 88 ppg with six players averaging in double-figures and the team shot 51.5 percent. Guards Keon Lewis (17.0 ppg) and Devon Agusi (17.0 ppg) led the way during the stretch for the squad, which also connected at a 42.5 percent clip from behind the arc. Defensively, the Birds collected 8.4 steals per outing and tallied a season-high 12 thefts against Rice. Meanwhile, the script has been flipped on the road in league play, where UTSA is averaging just 63.4 ppg and shooting 38.0 percent from the field. Upping the Ante: Despite losing its top three scorers from last year s squad, UTSA is averaging slightly more than six points per game better than it did in 2012-13. A season ago, Kannon Burrage led the team and ranked second in the Western Athletic Conferece with 17.2 points per outing, while Michael Hale III and Jeromie Hill contributed 15.6 and 13.1 points, respectively, and the Roadrunners averaged 64 points per game. With Burrage and Hale III lost to graduation and Hill redshirting while recovering from a knee injury, the team is putting up an average of 70.6 points.

After scoring 6.5 points a game last season, Jordan Sims has helped UTSA pick up the scoring with 11.2 ppg in 2013-14, while newcomers Keon Lewis (13.4 ppg) and Devon Agusi (12.0 ppg) lead the offensive effort. Hyjii Thomas (4.8 ppg to 9.9 ppg) and Edrico McGregor (4.0 ppg to 7.2 ppg) also have played a larger role as seniors this season. Climbing the Charts: In his final season at UTSA, senior Jordan Sims is leaving his mark on the program as he continues to climb the school s career charts. Entering action on Thursday, Sims is in sixth place on the career 3-pointers list with 147 treys. The Tuscon, Ariz., native needs five more to tie Ronnie Ellison (1989-92) for fifth on the chart. Last season, Sims hit 55 triples and shot 32 percent from downtown. Through 24 games this season he has a career-best 69 treys (2.88 per game, which ranks third in C-USA and 31st in the nation) and is connecting at a 39.7-percent clip. His 69 3-pointers also are tied for the eighth-highest single-season performance in school history (Melvin Johnson III/2010-11).In addition, Sims is rising up the school s all-time games played chart. Thursday s contest will mark his 113th in a UTSA uniform which would tie Reggie Minnieweather (1998-2002) for fourth on the list and would be just one game behind Dion Pettus (1985-89) for third place. If Sims plays in every remaining regular-season game and the Birds play a pair of contests at the C-USA Tournament, he could tie Devin Gibson s (2007-10) record of 119 games played. Agusi On Point: Walk-on point guard Devon Agusi has excelled this season and has turned his offense up a notch following the holiday break. The Dallas native scored at least 20 points four times, including a season-high 28 points against Cameron (Dec. 31), and averaged 15.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists in a 10 game stretch from Dec. 31-Feb. 6. Following his career day against Cameron, Agusi led all-scorers with 20 points and a season-high six rebounds at Arkansas on Jan. 4. He helped UTSA open Conference USA play 2-0 by scoring 10 points and dishing out three assists against Marshall (Jan. 9) before registering a game-high 22 points to go along with four assists in the Roadrunners triumph over Charlotte (Jan. 11). Agusi has appeared in all 24 games this season with 20 starts and has cracked the starting lineup in each of the last 14 games. For the season, he is averaging 12.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, while his.447 field goal percentage is tops among the guards. Free Falling: UTSA has shown a knack for getting to the free-throw line this season and it has made the most of those opportunities. The Roadrunners are averaging 29.4 freebies a game and their total of 706 attempts ranks 23rd in the nation. The squad is connecting at a 69.5 percent clip to rank third in Conference USA, while its total of 491 makes ranks 24th in the country. Junior Keon Lewis leads UTSA and ranks fifth in the league at 82.4 percent (126-of- 153). The Seattle, Wash., native went 13-of-13 from the line en route to 30 points against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and posted a 12-for-12 effort that led to a 20-point game at Texas-Pan American. The Roadrunners have shot better than 70 percent at the charity stripe 12 times this season. Lewis Hitting the Right Keys: Junior college transfer Keon Lewis has provided a boost to the Roadrunners offense in his first year with the team. The 6-foot-2 guard that came to UTSA from North Idaho College came off the bench in the first three contests this season and has earned the starting nod 12 times since. Lewis has scored at least 10 points in 17 of the 21 games that he has played and is averaging a team-leading 13.4 points per game, which ranks 17th in Conference USA, along with 2.7 assists and 2.1 rebounds while shooting 82.4 percent from the free-throw line. After foul trouble caused a scoreless first half of his debut against Northern Arizona on Nov. 9, Lewis tallied 15 points in the second half and connected on each of his first six attempts from the floor. In his first start of the season, he led the team with 16 points and followed with 30 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor, including three 3-pointers, and a perfect 13-for-13 effort at the free-throw line against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Nov. 23). Lewis was just one freebie away from tying the school-record for most free throws made in a game without a miss, which was set by Afis Olojuwon against Sam Houston State on Jan. 9, 1993. With 24 points against Louisiana Tech (Feb. 1), Lewis has eclipsed the 20-point mark four times this season. Basketball Jones: Redshirt freshman Phillip Jones continues to show improvement in his first season on the floor for UTSA. After coming off the bench in four games to open the season, Jones, who ranks second on the team with 5.8 rebounds per game, has started each of the last 17 games. The Freeport, Bahamas, native scored his first points as a Roadrunner at Nicholls (Nov. 26), where he finished with 11 points before a 12-point outing at Texas Tech three nights later. He was instrumental in UTSA s C-USA opener and helped the team top Marshall (Jan. 9) with 11 points, seven rebounds, two steals and a block in 21 minutes. In UTSA s win over Rice (Jan. 30), Jones collected his first double-double with season highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Since moving to the starting lineup, Jones is averaging 7.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Six-Pack: In its win over Rice (Jan. 30), the Roadrunners had six players finish in double figures for the first time since an 89-86 double-overtime setback to Sam Houston State on Feb. 4, 2009, which is span of 158 games. In addition, UTSA had two players (Phillip Jones, Edrico McGregor) tally double-doubles in the same game for the first time since Devin Gibson (20 pts, 10 ast) and Jeromie Hill (12 pts, 13 reb) did so on Feb. 16, 2011, against McNeese State. Thomas Strong Start: Senior guard Hyjii Thomas led UTSA in scoring and set new career highs in the first three contests this season. The 6-foot-1 native of Houston is averaging 9.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 0.9 steals in his final season in a Roadrunners uniform. Thomas opened the season with 17 points against Northern Arizona and followed that up with a 22-point effort in his hometown against the Cougars on Nov. 14. He scored 18 points in 18 first-half minutes on Nov. 18 against McMurry en route to 23 points and nearly became the third Roadrunner to record a triple-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists against Huston-Tillotson (Dec. 4). Finally, powered UTSA to a win at Texas-Pan American (Dec. 7) with yet another career high of 24 points. For the season, he is shooting 41.3 percent from the floor (69-of-167). He scored 159 points through 13 games this season, which surpassed the 154 points that he registered in 32 games a season ago. Starting on the Right Foot: UTSA started to 2-0 in conference action for the second time in the last three seasons and for the fourth time under head coach Brooks Thompson. The Roadrunners improved to 2-2 in inaugural conference games with their 90-81 win over Marshall (Jan. 9) as the program also won its first Trans America Athletic Conference game before falling in its Southland Conference and Western Athletic Conference debuts. After averaging 69.5 points through its 13 non-conference games, UTSA came out of the gate on fire and averaged 87.5 points in the opening weekend of C-USA play. That mark ranked second in the league, while the Roadrunners.526 field goal percentage in those games ranked third. In addition, the squad s 3-point percentage over the opening weekend (.455) was tied for tops in the circuit. UTSA s win over Charlotte (129) gave the Roadrunners their best RPI victory since they defeated UT Arlington (97), 97-88, on March 3, 2012, at the Convocation Center. Offense Heats Up in Win: The Roadrunners offense heated up against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Nov. 23 and produced one of the progam s best outings in the Brooks Thompson era. UTSA opened the game hitting eight of its first nine shots including five of its first six from behind the arc and shot 61.5 percent (24-of-39), which was the best effort from the Roadrunners since connecting on 64 percent of its attempts against Angelo State on Nov. 19, 2005. The team s 87 points were the most since putting up 97 points against UT Arlington on March 3, 2012. In addition, the squad s nine 3-pointers were a season high and its 30 free throws made were the most since hitting 35 against Sam Houston State on Feb. 20, 2010. In addition, Keon Lewis produced the first 30-point effort for a Roadrunner since Michael Hale III poured in a career-high 35 points in a win at Seattle U on Jan. 24, 2013. Spreading the Wealth: Through the season s first eight games, UTSA had six different players lead the team in scoring. Hyjii Thomas paced the squad in the first three games of the campaign by setting career highs in each contest before Keon Lewis led the Birds in the next two games. Lewis posted a season high for any UTSA player with 30 points against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Devon Agusi (16 points) led the way at Nicholls, while Phillip Jones had a dozen at Texas Tech. On Dec. 4, Jordan Sims and Kaj-Björn Sherman joined the group with 16 points apiece to lead the Roadrunners past Huston-Tillotson. Increasing Production: The UTSA offense saw an increase in production over a five-game stretch from Nov. 23- Dec. 7, which included two contests at home and three on the road. The Roadrunners averaged just 62.8 points per game through their first four games and only topped 70 points once in to open the campaign. In the next five games, UTSA averaged 77.2 points and pushed past the 70-point mark four times, including an 87-point outing against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and 90 points versus Huston-Tillotson. In that span the Roadrunners shot 50.6 percent from the field and had five players average at least 9.5 points per game. First on the Scene: A total of six players got their first taste of Division I action against Northern Arizona on Nov. 9. Devon Agusi earned the start at point guard while Phililp Jones, Keon Lewis, George Matthews, Kaj-Björn Sherman and James Williams all saw the floor in a regular season game for the first time at UTSA. Lewis connected on his first six attempts from the field and finished 6-of-7 en route to 15 points, two assists and a rebound in 15 minutes. Meanwhile, Sherman tallied eight points and four rebounds with Agusi adding seven points. In all, the group contributed 33 of the Roadrunners 63 points. Lucas O Brien debuted on Nov. 18 against McMurry while Trey Moore came off the bench against Texas Tech on Nov. 29 for his first action. Keith Benford became the ninth Roadrunners player to make his debut this season when he scored three points in two minutes against Huston-Tillotson (Dec. 4). Hill to Redshirt: Senior Jeromie Hill will redshirt after missing the season s first nine games due to a knee injury. The Cairns, Australia, native averaged 13.1 points and 6.5 rebounds last season and became just the sixth player

in program history to top 1,000 points and 500 rebounds with a 12-point, nine-rebound performance against Utah State (Dec. 29). The two-time all-conference pick ranks fourth in school history with 92 starts, sixth with 598 rebounds, seventh with 454 field goals, eighth with 1,195 points and ninth with a 6.5 career rebounding average. He can be heard on the airwaves with radio play-by-play man Andy Everett on home broadcasts the rest of the season. UTSA Announces Early Signees: UTSA signed Austin Karrer (New Braunfels, Texas/Canyon HS), James Ringholt (Rockhampton, Australia/Brisbane Boys College) and Christian Wilson (Baton Rouge, La./Notre Dame Prep) to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. Karrer is a 6-foot-3 guard that earned All-District 25-5A honors last season, while Ringholt, a 6-foot-10 center, averaged 15 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks per game this season. The 6-foot-2 Wilson attended Notre Dame Prep during the fall 2013 semester and last played at Cathedral City [Calif.] High School where he averaged 33 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals per game in 2012-13. A New Home: UTSA officially joined Conference USA (C-USA) on July 1, 2013, after accepting an invitation on May 4, 2012. The 16-team league includes Charlotte, East Carolina, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion, Rice, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UTEP and UTSA. Following the season, East Carolina, Tulane and Tulsa will join the American Athletic Conference, while Western Kentucky will jump to Conference USA. UTSA, which started athletics in 1981-82, is in its fourth league after spending time as a member of the Trans America Athletic Conference (1986-91), Southland Conference (1991-2012) and Western Athletic Conference (2012-13). Butler, Denver, Texas State, UT Arlington and UTSA are the first schools to compete in three different NCAA Division I conferences in three consecutive seasons. Fresh Faces: UTSA will face eight teams this season that the program never has met in its previous 32-year history. The Roadrunners opened the campaign with one such opponent, Northern Arizona, while the team will see the remaining seven in Conference USA action. The Roadrunners are 16-26 all-time against 2013-14 Conference USA members and have won four of the last seven meetings. The Road Less Traveled: The Roadrunners earned their nickname last season by traveling approximately 26,036 miles by bus and plane for 21 scheduled contests away from the Alamo City. That s the equivalent of roughly 994 marathons. UTSA played nine of its first 10 games on the road and totaled 10,595 miles in a six-game road trip that took them on a tour of six different states and four time zones. This season, the Roadrunners will leave the state just twice in their first 15 games (at Nicholls/Nov. 26, at Arkansas/Jan.4) and didn t play in their sixth road game until a Jan. 16 matchup at UAB. Thompson s Tenure: Now in his eighth season at UTSA, head coach Brooks Thompson is the second-longest tenured coach in program history. The former NBA first-round pick has guided the Roadrunners to 96 wins over the last six seasons (16 wins per campaign), including just the sixth 20-win season in school annals with a 20-14 mark in 2010-11. That squad won the Southland Conference Tournament by defeating the field s top three seeds in a four-day stretch before besting Alabama State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, which was the first NCAA Tournament victory for UTSA in any sport. New Faces: With the additions of walk-ons Keith Benford and Trey Moore, the Roadrunners have a total of 10 newcomers (including players who redshirted last year) this season. Devon Agusi, Phillip Jones and Lucas O Brien all redshirted last season, while George Matthews sat out per NCAA rules and practiced with the team following his transfer from Utah. Meanwhile, the Birds welcome Keon Lewis, Larry Lewis, Kaj-Björn Sherman and James Williams, along with Benford and Moore, to the fold this fall. The 15 players on UTSA s roster have a total of 12 seasons of NCAA Division I experience between them and 75 percent of that comes from seniors Jeromie Hill, Jordan Sims and Tyler Wood, who have played three years apiece. International Connection: During head coach Brooks Thompson s first four seasons at the helm, UTSA had just one international player on campus in the form of Oldendorf, Germany, native Richie Frohlich (2008-10). This season, three foreign players dot the Roadrunners roster. Senior Jeromie Hill was born and raised in Cairns, Australia, while sennior Edrico McGregor (Nassau) and redshirt freshman Phillip Jones (Freeport) both hail from the Bahamas. All totaled, Thompson has had seven foreign players during his eight years in the Alamo City. Up Next: UTSA will conclude its road trip with a 7 p.m. contest on Saturday at Tulane. Political Science, Oklahoma State, 2001 UTSA Men s Basketball Game Notes Head Coach Eighth Season Oklahoma State 85 Former NBA First Round draft pick and Oklahoma State star Brooks Thompson is in his eighth season as head coach of the UTSA men s basketball program. Introduced as the Roadrunners fifth head coach on April 18, 2006, Thompson has assembled a talented and hard-working staff with more than 40 combined years of collegiate coaching experience and the result has been a turnaround both on and off the court. In his seven years in the Alamo City, UTSA has registered the school s first-ever NCAA postseason victory in any sport, captured one league championship, made two conference tournament title game appearances and recorded the most successful four-year stretch (76 wins) in two decades. More than 20 school records have fallen under his watch, while nine players have earned all-conference honors and three have been tabbed league freshman of the year (Devin Gibson, 2008; Melvin Johnson III, 2010; Jeromie Hill, 2011). The Roadrunners also have taken care of business in the classroom. UTSA has collected eight league all-academic certificates under Thompson, including Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year honorees in Gibson (2010, 11) and Hill (2012). Kurt Attaway garnered Academic All-District accolades in 2007. Additionally, the program s Academic Progress Rate (APR) has improved significantly since Thompson s arrival, jumping from an 818 for the season prior to his arrival to a 945 in the last report. Thompson also has placed a strong emphasis on graduating players, as more than 80 percent of his student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility at UTSA have earned their undergraduate degree. Last season, UTSA won five of its last eight games for a strong finish in its first and only season in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The ninth-seeded Roadrunners ran past No. 8 San Jose State (67-49) in the opening round of the WAC Tournament before pulling off the biggest upset by seed in the tournament history by ousting top-seed and regular season co-champion Louisiana Tech, 73-67, in the quarterfinal round. UTSA made the program s third conference tournament semifinal appearance in the past five seasons, where it fell to UT Arlington. UTSA defeated Holy Cross and Old Dominion on the season-opening weekend en route to capturing the Liberty Tax Classic crown. Michael Hale III earned third-team All-WAC honors and Hill was named to the WAC All-Academic Team. The 2010-11 campaign arguably was the most successful in 20 years. Thompson guided UTSA to the Southland Tournament Championship for the first time since 2004 and to the program s fourth NCAA Tournament appearance, where it registered the first NCAA postseason victory in any sport in the department s 30-year history with a 70-61 first-round victory over Alabama State during the First Four on March 16 in Dayton, Ohio. That outcome gave UTSA its first 20-win season in 19 years. He led the Roadrunners to their second consecutive 4-1 start a school record and their fourth straight 4-0 start at home. UTSA tied for third in the Southland West Division and fifth overall to qualify for its fourth straight Southland Tournament, where it upset the top three seeds en route to the crown. Topranked Ohio State ended the Roadrunners season at 20-14 with a 75-46 setback in the NCAA Second Round in Cleveland. Six school records were broken in 2010-11, as Gibson has eclipsed the career assists, steals, free throws, games played and starts standards and the single-season free throws mark. Gibson earned first-team NABC All-District 23 and first-team All-Southland honors and was named Southland Tournament MVP and Southland Student-Athlete of the Year for the second straight season. Hill was tabbed a Mid-Major Freshman All- American by CollegeInsider.com and Southland Freshmen of the Year and he earned honorable mention all-league accolades along with Johnson III and all-tournament honors along with Gibson. In June 2010, Thompson served as a court coach for the Team USA Under-18 National Team training camp held on the UTSA campus. He worked with the National Team coaching staff prior to the selection of the 12-member team that represented the USA at the 2010 FIBA Americas U18 Championship. Thompson came to UTSA from Arizona State, where he served as an assistant coach for two seasons. He helped the Sun Devils post eight wins against teams that qualified for the postseason and one of his players Ike Diogu was the Pac-10 Player of the Year, a second-team All-American and the ninth overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft (Golden State Warriors). The Sun Devils qualified for the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) in 2005. Prior to his stint at Arizona State, Thompson was head coach at Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz., for two seasons (2002-04) where he compiled a 55-14 record and a.797 winning percentage, the highest in school history. He was named NJCAA Region I Coach of the Year both seasons and Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) Coach of the Year in 2002-03. Thompson led the Roughriders to back-to-back ACCAC regular season titles the first two conference titles in school history and to two consecutive Region I Tournament Championships. Thompson guided Yavapai to a 28-7 record in 2002-03, qualifying for the NJCAA Tournament and finishing with a final national ranking of No. 11. In 2003-04, Yavapai was ranked as high as No. 8 and finished the season with a 27-7 mark, a No. 17 ranking and a second straight NJCAA Tournament berth Yavapai had previously qualified just once in 1980. The Roughriders scored 91.1 points per game (14th in the nation) and ranked 13th in the country in both field goal percentage (55.0) and 3-point field goal percentage (38.0). He began his coaching career as an undergraduate assistant at Oklahoma State in 1998-99 and served as head coach at Metro Christian Academy in Tulsa, Okla., in 1999-2000. He then was an assistant coach for one season at Southeastern Louisiana in 2000-01. In all, Thompson has coached 17 players who have gone on to professional careers, including five current or former NBA players. That list includes Diogu, former Oklahoma State stars Maurice Baker, Desmond Mason and Melvin Sanders and former Yavapai standout Larry Owens.
