Sheep & Goat Exhibitor News The National Scrapie Eradication Program, a federal program to eliminate the disease Scrapie from the US sheep and goat flocks, began in November of 2001. Because of the cost to the industry, the long time between exposure and symptoms and the prevalence in the US, all sheep and goat producers, including 4-Hers, must help eradicate the disease. This program affects sheep and goats that are exhibited or sold. 4-Hers who purchase ewe lambs should be sure they are tagged by the original owner, and obtain an Owner s Statement with flock information provided. To register your flock for the scrapie program and receive your free tags, call toll free at 1-866-873-2824. It takes about 3 weeks for tags to arrive. For more information, go to: http://www.eradicatescrapie.org/ ALL reproductively intact sheep and goats, except wethers, require scrapie tags. This includes ewes, rams and does. All sheep tags and state fair goat tags must be in before weigh-ins. All county fair goat tags must be in to be shown at the fair. 2

Seniors: 8:00am Intermediates: 9:30am Juniors: 1:00pm Youth Project Loans from FSA The United States Department of Agriculture s Farm Service Agency, FSA, makes operating loans to individual rural youth, aged 10-20, to establish and operate income producing projects. These projects must be of modest size and be initiated, developed and carried out by rural youth participating in 4-H or FFA. Each project must be part of an organized and supervised, program of work. It must be planned and operated with the assistance of the youth s parents and organization leaders or advisor, produce sufficient income to repay the loan and provide the youth with practical business and Education experience. These loans can finance nearly any kind of agricultural income producing project with an annual or term repayment plan, depending on the specific project. Maximum loan amount is $5000 per individual with a fixed interest rate. The interest rate changes periodically, but once the loan is closed, the rate will not change. If you would like further information, please contact the Monroe County FSA Office at 641-932-7134. In continued support of our area youth in agriculture, Farmers Bank of Northern Missouri is proud to make agricultural loans available to FFA and 4-H members in our market areas of Northern Missouri and Southern Iowa. In addition to providing financial assistance in their projects, the program can also be a financial education tool. By developing financial statements and cash flows with the students, they can also develop an understanding and evaluate their enterprise performance.
