Family Mae Carol Jemison was born on October 17, 1956. Mae was the youngest of four. Charlie Jemison was her father. He watched over African American boys that did not have fathers that were around. Dorothy Green was her mother. She was a teacher and an author. Charles Jemison was her only brother. Ada Jemison Bullock was also her only sister. She is a board certified psychiatrist in Houston, Texas. They lived in Alabama, but moved to Chicago- which is what she calls her hometown.
What mae jemison is Famous for? Mae Jemison is famous because she was the first African American to travel into space. She went into orbit aboard the space shuttle Endeavour on September 12, 1992.
education/college Mae Jemison graduated from Morgan Park High School in Chicago, Illinois in 1973. Mae enrolled at Stanford University at the age 16 in 1977. She graduated with a degree in medicine from Cornell University in 1981. Mae Jemison received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering. Mae Jemison is a physician engineer educator. Mae also worked as an astronaut for Nasa for six years.
Accomplishments and awards Mae Jemison was the first female African American astronaut. Mae Jemison was the first African American to be allowed to attend training to be an astronaut. She is a trained physician. She studied biomedical engineering at Stanford University. Mae was awarded with the the Ebony Black achievements award in 1992. She spent eight days in space.

Jemison was the science mission specialist on this mission between the US and Japan. This eight day mission was accomplished in 127 orbits around the Earth.Dr.Jemison in space for 190 hours,30 minutes, and 23 seconds.
