Time to Register for ASE Session 3! SESSION 3 ~ January 26 th March 19 th IMPORTANT DATES AND INFORMATION Turn in your FORM & PAYMENT - STARTING WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20TH Remembering that classes are filled on a first come first served basis. Registrations will be processed beginning on Tuesday, January 19th. We will try to place students in at least one of their first choices, but cannot make any guarantees. Once a class is filled, we will maintain a wait list. Please make every effort to turn in your form and payment by Friday, January 22 nd. Classes Begin - TUESDAY, JANUARY 26TH You will be contacted by the ASE instructor to confirm your child s ASE schedule. Please pay careful attention to class dates and duration, as some classes are longer than others. Last Day of Classes - MONDAY, MARCH 15TH - FRIDAY, MARCH 19TH REGISTRATION PROCEDURES 1. Fill out the registration form completely, one for each day and cut them apart. (Separate set of forms for each child please.) there are more forms available on the school website 2. Staple or clip your class fee, made payable to the instructor, to the back of the forms for your first-choice class for each day that you are registering. (PLEASE NOTE: We cannot include your child on the After-School Enrichment class roster without your payment made out to the instructor. Checks made out to CCS will be returned.) 3. Class Descriptions 5K Fitness for Girls. Train to run the May 8 th 5K at Freedom park, discuss and track my triathlon training, focus on nutrition while staying active and strength training as it relates to running. (Actual 5K race is optional) Animal Explorers. Each week we will learn about a different animal. The children will listen to a story, make a craft, play a game, and do a little research about each animal on the computer and from books. At the end of the class each child will have a self constructed animal fun fact booklet to take home. The animals that we will be studying are sharks, whales, dolphins, llamas, snakes, worms and mice. *These animals are all different from the last 2 sessions. Cheerleading & Other Fun Stuff for Girls. Join in the fun! Cheerleading, dance, cooking, crafts and more. Led by Lisa Humphries, Mary Mayo and CSD Middle School Cheerleaders. First 3 Weeks - dance, cooking and crafts with Mrs. Mayo (Jan 28, Feb 4, Feb 11) Last 4 Weeks - cheerleading with Lisa Humphries and CSD Cheerleaders (Feb 18, Feb 25, March 4, March 11) We will share our learning with parents with a cheer performance during our last class together. Lets Play Chess. Learn the fine art of chess, or refine the skills you already have while playing this time honored game which develops logical thinking, imagination, creativity, problem solving and the capability to predict and foresee consequences of actions. Children s Yoga. Yoga cultivates a way for all to explore body heart and mind. Learning tool and resources which lead us to happier and healthier lives. In the Yoga class students will learn basic postures, learning about the breath and techniques to calm the mind. They will work on the importance of both speaking and listening. Movement, breath and the concept of stilling the mind all work together to introduce the kids to early yoga. Chorus: With our own CCS music specialist Laurie Loomer at the helm, this 15-week program brings together boys and girls who love to sing and dance in a performance-oriented format that focuses on the development of the singing voice. Rehearsals feature vocal exercises, part-singing, and more; the end result will be a performance. Scholarships and sibling discounts available, please contact the instructor directly. Dance and Choreography: This class will focus on creative dance, modern, jazz, and hip-hop with opportunities for choreography and improvisation. Drop in Art: Presented by Children s Art Project (CAP), a local nonprofit group that operates CCS in-class art program, Drop-in Art involves mixed media for all ages. $8 per hour or 10 hours for $70. Multiple discounts apply! The first 2 children are full price; each additional child receives a 50% discount. Additional hours are discounted 50%. Dodgeball. This is not your dad's dodge ball, but still so fun! We will be using a safe and soft high density foam ball. We will create a safe environment for this game, while still keeping fun at the forefront. Face Painting & Body Art: Travel from India with some cool henna art, to China wearing your New Year dragon tattoos. We ll explore the many cultures that use this oldest from of art for their ceremonies and celebrations. Learn how to mix up your own face paint, design your own washable tattoo, make Native American art, or art from Australia. Face painting and body art will lead us on a cultural and artistic exploration of each country we visit. Beginning Fencing: will teach the students the basics of this fast paced sport of fencing including footwork, blade work, and tactics. They will learn both offense and defensive actions. They will practice what they have learned through actual bouting. The cost is $90 session, which includes the use of all equipment. Girls Just Want to Have Fun Fitness Program. Designed to empower girls to lead a healthy life style through proper nutrition and physical activity. Our class activities will also promote confidence, strong self-esteem, and encourage positive emotional and social behavior. So what does this offer to your girl who just wants to have fun? Well, she will have lots of fun running, playing games, trying our new fitness ideas like yoga, aerobic dance, and field games. She will also get a chance to try yummy nutritious snack foods and even work on a fitness journal. We will train to do the Spartan Sprint (3K) run however, we will not just be about running. There will be lots of options for having fun and getting fit! This class is a semester long class and will be offered as a single day per week class on Mondays for grades K- 2 only and two days per week on Tuesday and Thursday for grades 2-5. Classes will begin the week of January 25th and run for 13 weeks. Guitar Presto: A young beginner approach to Guitar instruction. Learn the art of playing the guitar. Each child will learn music theory, proper techniques, ear training, rhythmic reading, and finger geography of the guitar. The lessons will be taught through a musical based curriculum guidebook. Class Descriptions Guys Fit for Life: This class is designed to prepare young children to excel in every area of their life. There will be a developmentally appropriate fitness curriculum. We will also have a personal, social and moral component to teach values that will lead to success in all areas of life. Note: the Monday/Wednesday Intermediate session is designed for the guys who participated in the fall sessions of Guys Fit for Life. The Tuesday/Thursday beginner session is designed for students who are enrolling for the first time. Homework Club. In order to help both the parents and the students, we are offering early week homework club. We will be helping to facilitate homework getting done and done well, while taking out the stress of parent\child. This is an eight week session for only $50. Karate: Shorinji Kempo Karate Join the journey to black belt! New students will learn lower belt level skills that include the beginning stances, punches, kicks and blocks. Returning students will continue with their next level of skills. Obstacle courses and games that help develop martial arts skills are included in this course as well as basic shoulder rolls and learning to slap out when falling. This year 2 nd degree black belt curriculum has been added on Wednesdays. It will be combined with the advanced class. Try it out and amaze yourself! Kid Concoctions Creative Cooking Club. Students will participate in literature-based cooking activities and enjoy hands-on cooking experiences. They will have opportunities to practice math and reading skills in an exciting, meaningful way, work cooperatively in small groups, develop good work habits as they carefully follow directions in sequential order, and build selfconfidence as they successfully prepare the recipes. Get ready to savor good books and delicious recipes! Intro to knitting. This class is offered to those interested in learning basic knitting skills such as casting on, knitting and casting off. In this class children will finish at least one simple project. Materials needed: size 10 or 10.5 knitting needles. Supplies: Please bring a skein of yarn and a pair of knitting needles to class. Play Production & Improvisation. Students will work on basic acting and improvisation skills while creating a play to be performed for the Elementary School in the spring. Class will include warm-up techniques, theatre games, basic acting, play production and opportunities to build self confidence and teamwork. Wrenn Goodrum is an instructor for Davidson Community Players. Prior to relocating to North Carolina, Wrenn was founder and artistic director of All Children's Theatre, a non-profit youth theatre company located in Rhode Island. Piano Presto: A young beginners approach to piano instruction. This funfilled piano class will teach your child rhythm reading, geographic location of the letter names on the keyboard, and will develop the five-finger dexterity of both hands. Your child will be able to play familiar songs by the end of this program. Speedstacking. An exciting individual and team sport where competitors stack and unstack 12 specially designed cups called Speedstacks in predetermined sequences at lightning speed! Speedstacking promotes hand-eye coordination, ambidexterity, quickness, and concentration- skills needed to excel in both sports AND academics. When students are stacking, they re using both sides of their bodies and brains. We ll add in some running, jumping, and relays to the equation and get hearts pumping, hands coordinating, and brains activating! Please bring your own set of Speed Stacks to the class. Check out www.speedstacks.com for purchase. (We have a few sets available on loan). Super Hero Mania. From Word Girl to Superman, we will explore the positive characteristics of the many super heroes and then create one of our own! We will read super hero books and make a book to keep. After making a shoebox playset, we will design clay action figures to complete it. Create the perfect cape or mask to role play your new super hero.
