August 2017 Edgewood View W H E R E H E R I T A G E & E X C E L L E N C E C O M E T O G E T H E R F r o m t h e D e s k o f t h e G e n e r a l M a n a g e r I want to bring attention to a great accomplishment of the ECC s Gator Swim Team during this past season. During the months of June and July every member of the Gators Swim Team practiced diligently. Each member of the team consistently improved under the guidance of our swim Coaches Mary Kathrin and Robert. Due to their dedication and hard work the ECC Gators finished the season UNDEFEATED which afforded them the title of Division Champions. WAY TO GO GATORS! As we move into August, most of our members have already, or are in the process of finalizing summer vacations. This normally translates into increased utilization in our food and beverage outlets. Please be mindful of this normal seasonal increase and remember when possible to make reservations in advance of your expected visit so we are prepared for you and your guests. August also brings with it thoughts of fall being just around the corner. To me, late August and early September tend to be great golf weather. Craig, Troy and their crews have worked hard over the spring and summer and the fruits of their hard work are showing. At the same time, Keith Pritchard is gearing up for a fantastic squash season. Please review this newsletter for several new squash programs he and the Racquets Committee have created for you to enjoy. In closing I would like to encourage every ECC member to forward to me contact information on any prospective member. Upon receiving the information I will do all the leg work to get them to join while you reap the benefits of 50% off dues for 2 months if they join. I look forward to seeing you soon at your Edgewood Country Club All my best, Shane L. E d g e w o o d V i e w F r o m t h e E C C C h e f Live to eat Here at Edgewood Country Club, our Culinary Staff is full of individuals with special talents and skill. Although it may not be known to all, it is our pleasure to accommodate special request that are made in order to provide a more personal dining experience. Please let me and my team know, so we can make that special evening or event come true. Summer brings out a great variety of vegetables and none that is celebrated as much as asparagus. Without a doubt, it s the favorite and most requested among our members. I enjoy its versatility in salads along with different preparations that can accompany an entrée or an evening on the deck and patio with your grill. Just by making a simple citrus vinaigrette or topping it with lemon butter and pine nuts, the flavors of the asparagus brings success to any dish. Here s a quick but flavorful recipe that warrants trying. In preparing your asparagus its best to steam it until bright green, tender, yet still having a bit of crispness to the stem. 1 Tbl. Toasted Pine nuts 2 Lb. Asparagus 3 tsp. Fresh Orange Juice 2 tsp. Lemon Juice 4 Tbl. Olive Oil, Salt and Pepper 1 tsp. Red Peppercorns (chopped, if available) Combine all the above ingredients and whisk for 30 seconds until emulsified. Drizzle over freshly cooked asparagus and serve hot or this can be chilled and used over salad greens to enhance your entrée luncheon. E d g e w o o d V i e w F r o m t h e P r o S h o p Don t Fear When Near One of the most feared shots in golf inside 60 yards is the pitch over a bunker from a tightly mown fairway lie. Given the choice, most amateurs would rather be in the rough, because they feel like they can slide the club head underneath the ball. But from a firm lie, there is no cushion of grass under the ball, and the margin for error is much less than it is from the rough. Hit the shot fat here, and you ll probably wind up in the bunker or worse. Here are a few setup and swing changes that should help to settle your nerves and make this shot easier to execute more consistently. The biggest mistake amateur golfers make on this shot is that they set up with the handle leaning too far forward, as if they were going to hit a chip and run. This acts to deloft the clubface, producing a lower shot than desired, and also exposes the leading edge so you re more prone to dig and hit the shot fat. Because the ball is so far back in the stance, there s also a tendency to hang back and scoop the club head under the ball to add loft. Use the bounce as your friend, you do not have to be as precise with contact as you might think. On the backswing, feel as if the club head is moving more to the inside and your arms are swinging across your chest which helps round out your downswing. There will still be some descent to the club head, but the shallower angle of attack will allow you to utilize the bounce more effectively so that the club head can skid underneath the ball and not dig. Remain relatively centered with your sternum and chin directly over the ball at impact. Notice how my left arm and club shaft are in a fairly straight line and there s no breakdown in the left wrist; my legs are also very quiet. Just as important, the club s trailing edge is merely skimming across the top of the grass (photo, above). You want the feeling that the club head is staying low to the ground through impact, which helps preserve the true loft on the face. Craig Berner, Head Golf Professional August Golf Schedule Tuesday, August 1 st Golf Course Closed (aeration) Wednesday, August 2 nd Golf Course Closed (aeration) Thursday, August 3 rd Golf Course Closed (aeration) Saturday, August 19 th First round of Men s, Senior, & Junior Club Championships Sunday, August 20 th Final Round Men s, Senior, & Junior Club Championships Monday, August 21 st CAMC Golf Outing (11am shotgun start) Saturday, August 26 th Make A Wish Golf Outing 1pm (Golf Course Closed starting at noon) The golf course and driving range will be closed starting Monday, July 31st through Thursday, August 3rd for aerification. Aerification is merely a short-term disruption that has long-term benefits for golf course. When you see those little holes, remember that without them the greens would eventually die. Like so many things, the quality of a good putting green is more than skin deep. In fact, the condition of a green has a lot to do with what goes on below the surface. In order for grass to grow at 3/16-inch, it must have deep, healthy roots. Good roots demand oxygen. In good soil, they get the oxygen from tiny pockets of air trapped between soil and sand particles. We understand this is a frustrating process to you as a member but want you to know it is a very important step in maintaining the conditioning of the golf course. As a reminder, if you are looking for a place to play during this time, ECC has reciprocity with Sleepy Hollow (304) 757-6581 and Parkersburg Country Club (304) 295-8551. Please call their respective pro shops to setup a tee time. Tee times for the following weekend (August 5th and 6th) will taken on Friday, August 4th.

SLIM GUYS DRINK IT NAKED Racquets & Fitness More than half of Americans who drink coffee daily add sugar, cream, milk, or other calorie-rich ingredients, say a new analysis from the U. of Illinois. This barrage of extra gunk may be loaded with energy, but it also has fat and lacks much nutrition. Tea drinkers, also add an average of more than 43 extra calories with 85% coming from sugar. On the flip side, people who drink black coffee get about 69 fewer calories on average every day. question regarding fitness please contact Michael @ 304-549-5477 Squash is a fantastic learning engine for children that help develop disciplinary skills, extended concentration, body awareness and coordination. It is also a great motivator to be active and challenge physical condition. Never before has Squash had so many opportunities for long term growth and benefit either. http://collegesquashassociation.com/teams/mens-teams/ http://collegesquashassociation.com/teams/womens-teams/ Squash is growing rapidly as one of the top College access sports that is currently available to students who wish to pursue high performance sport. As you can see from the list of schools, these are top academic institutions in the country and many want to recruit American student athletes to fill their rosters. A large part of my experience playing at the National and World Level as a junior myself has enabled me to carry key skills and knowledge of this landscape forward to my coaching career. If this is an area of interest for you, please contact me and I can help provide further information. Long term development and planning is crucial to the success of any athlete, and of course with more time to train, compete and learn the sport, the better. Good athletes who are willing to commit to rigorous training regiments could take up Squash and have a realistic shot at the College level starting at age 12/13 for boys, and 13/14 for the girls.
