Parents Evening Parents Evening will be held on Tuesday 12 th March from 4.00pm 6.00pm or Thursday 14 th March from 6.00pm 8.00pm. This will give you an opportunity to discuss, with your child and their teacher, progress, specific targets and have a chance to look at your child s work. World Book Week World Book Week begins on Monday 4 th March. Our theme this year will be Traditional Tales where every class in school will chose a traditional tale to focus on. This will include a range of learning activities including cooking, book swap, paired reading, story writing and much more! World Book Day is Thursday 7 th March where children can come and dress up as a book character for the day. As always, there will be a prize for each year group for the most imaginative costume. Roald Dahl Menu We will be having a special themed menu based on foods mentioned in Roald Dahl books, on Wednesday 6th March as part of World Book Week. So that we are able to supply sufficient meals, please could any children who normally have their own packed lunch and would like to swap for the day, please inform the office by completing and returning the form attached. Book Sale The SPIRIT club will be a holding a second hand book fair during Book Week. Please spend a little while over half term searching through your homes for any books you may have finished with and are willing to donate. They would also welcome any CDs or DVDs. At their next meeting they will be looking at a variety of good causes and deciding who they should donate the proceeds to. Should you have books etc to donate, please bring them to school anytime after 4 th March. Community Garden A Community Growing Plot has become available at St Johns Church in Horbury Bridge for anyone wanting space to grow their own food. The Plot is 7 metres long x 1.5 metres wide and fees are 2.50 a month plus a refundable gate key deposit of 5. All those interested in taking on this plot should email Andy at andy@incredible-ediblle-wakefield.co.uk After School Club This week the activities have been based around Valentines Day and Pancake Day. The children have made their own box of chocolates, sequin hearts and made pancakes for Shrove Tuesday. The next theme at after school club will be a Jungle theme with activities including making animal masks, baking and jungle bowling. There will be a film night as usual. Please complete the form attached or contact the office to book a place. Fairtrade Fortnight The first two weeks of next half term is Fairtrade Fortnight. The Fairtrade scheme enables farmers and other producers to get a fair price for their goods as well as providing funds to their communities for clean water systems and areas such as medical centres or schools. Whilst many of you will be aware that chocolate bars such as Kit Kats and most Dairy Milk chocolate products are Fairtrade, there is a far larger range of goods now available. To highlight the range of Fairtrade goods that are now in shops, we will be having a special Fairtrade week of school dinners. The dishes will include at least sixteen different products including chocolate, cocoa, rice, spices, sugar, honey, marmalade, coffee and fruit. Children at breakfast club will also have the opportunity to have a cup of Fairtrade hot chocolate and bananas with their breakfast. Class 3 Netball Tournament On Monday, Class 3 participated in an inter school netball tournament with the local schools in our area. They showed great teamwork and perservance and were placed fifth. The children were also awarded the Fair Play award for their great sportsmanship.

Foundation Stage This week we were overwhelmed by the amount of parents that attended our Foundation Stage Stay and Play. The theme of the event was Preparation for a Fairytale Wedding and included activities such as taste testing for our favourite buns, designing invitations and cocktail making all in preparation for the wedding next term. The children decided that their favourite bun flavour for the wedding was lemon and the chosen design for invitations to be sent out to guests was created by Evie Longman. Thank you to all the parents for their support at this event! Class 1 Class one have been very busy over the past week. Last Thursday we had an exhibition of the children s work completed over the half term. The children really enjoyed being able to show and explain their work to their families. Gabriella said It was really exciting because we could show our parents our work and our miniature gardens. Mrs Ellis and Miss Cowley would also like to thank the parents for working so hard with their children at home. They were amazed by the quality of the Horbury Bridge project homework they received. On Friday Class 1 had a wonderful numeracy lesson making pizza. Jamie told his mum Today we pretended to do numeracy but really we made pizza. We did measuring, shapes and fractions. Class 1 children also managed to fill their marble jar this week through good behaviour during class, assemblies and lunchtimes. They chose to have a disco for their treat. Amelia said I loved the disco, it was the best treat! Class 2 Since last week s newsletter, Class 2 have filled their marble jar! This means that they had half a day of pupil choice. After Emily s suggestion of making a piñata, the class went loco for the idea of a Mexican day. We brought in our own boxes and mounds of sweets and enjoyed an afternoon making our own piñata s. Class Two had a great day and looked fabulous in their Mexican attire. Class 3 This week Class 3 have been creating their own films using Photo Story. They were focusing on inspirational people whilst linking in with our SEAL topic Going for Goals. The children showcased these in our whole school SEALs assembly on Wednesday and all the children loved them! Future Stars On Monday, Imogen Priestley and Robyn Marsh represented our school in the West Yorkshire Police Talent show Future Stars. They both gave an absolutely outstanding performance at the Wakefield Town Hall and wowed their audience with their singing ability. Despite the tough competition, Imogen was the overall winner and was presented with a 500 cheque for the school. She will now enter the Grand Final on 1st March at Wakefield Theatre Royal having the chance to win a further 3000 for school. Both girls preformed in front of the whole school and all the children and staff were extremely proud.
