Rice has led the Runnin Rebels to 95 victories over his first four-plus years (the team won an average of 22 games per season over his first four seasons). With UNLV s win over then-no. 3 Arizona last season and its victory over then-no. 13/14 Indiana in Maui just before Thanksgiving, Coach Rice has now led UNLV to nine wins over ranked teams in his four-plus years leading the Runnin Rebel program, including two wins over top-five teams. Sophomore guard Patrick McCaw leads the Runnin Rebels in scoring this season (19.0), while three others are averaging double-figures in scoring: freshman Derrick Jones Jr. (13.0 ppg), senior Jerome Seagears (11.5 ppg) and freshman Stephen Zimmerman Jr. (10.0 ppg). Zimmerman Jr. battled illness during the Maui Invitational and then injured his ankle during the Prairie View A&M game. Zimmerman Jr. leads the team in rebounding (8.7 rpg) and blocks (2.0 bpg), while Seagears (4.7 apg) and McCaw (4.4 apg) lead the team in assists. McCaw also leads in steals (3.3 spg) and is sixth in the country. Seagears was diagnosed with a concussion this week and has been held out of some practices. For the first time this season, UNLV is receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll. UNLV was picked to finish fourth in this year s Mountain West race by the media. Zimmerman Jr. was named the league s Preseason Freshman of the Year. UNLV returns seven scholarship players from last year s roster with six newcomers making up another highly regarded recruiting class. After a top-five recruiting class in 2014, Rivals.com has this year s Runnin Rebel class ranked No. 11 in the country. This year s class is led by Zimmerman Jr. (7-footer), a Las Vegas product and McDonald s High School All-American. The 2012 UNLV class was ranked No. 7 in the country by ESPN and included Anthony Bennett, who went on to become the top overall selection in the 2013 NBA Draft. McCaw is the Runnin Rebels leading returning scorer. He averaged 9.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals per game last year. Sophomore guard Jordan Cornish made 48.7 percent of his 3-point attempts last season (38-of-78), which ranks second all-time for a season in UNLV history. He is shooting just 1 of 19 from long distance so far this season. UNLV lost freshman guard Rashad Vaughn and sophomore forward Christian Wood from last year s team to the NBA. Vaughn was selected with the No. 17 overall pick by the Milwaukee Bucks, while Wood went undrafted and signed a free-agent contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. UNLV has now had two first-round NBA Draft picks in the last three years (Anthony Bennett was the No. 1 overall pick in 2013). The Runnin Rebels finished the 2014-15 season with an overall record of 18-15, finishing seventh in the Mountain West at 8-10. ThE no. 15/16 oregon ducks (6-0, 0-0 PaC-12) Oregon has won all six of its home games so far this season, including a 74-67 win over then-no. 20 Baylor on Nov. 16. The Ducks are coming off a 78-73 win over Fresno State on Monday. Oregon finished 26-10 overall last season and tied for second in the Pac-12 with a 13-5 mark. The Ducks advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year last season, which marked the first time the program has ever accomplished that feat. After defeating Oklahoma State, Oregon fell to Wisconsin to end its season in its second game of the Big Dance. In the Fresno State game, Oregon held off a furious rally by the Bulldogs. The Ducks led by double digits at halftime, 37-25, and took their largest lead of the game at 55-36 early in the second half. Fresno State cut its deficit to four points at 72-68 with just under two minutes left. Sophomore forward Dillon Brooks posted his second double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Senior forward Chris Boucher and senior forward Elgin Cook added 14 points, while Boucher contributed five rebounds and five blocked shots. Freshman guard Tyler Dorsey also added 12 points. Oregon committed a season-high 17 turnovers. Boucher is second in the country in blocked shots per game with 4.33. The Ducks have five players averaging double-figures in scoring: Dorsey (14.7 ppg), Brooks (13.5 ppg), Cook (13.0 ppg), Boucher (12.7 ppg) and senior forward Dwayne Benjamin (10.7 ppg). Dorsey is the team s assist leader (3.0 apg), while Cook leads in steals (2.0 spg). The Oregon roster is made up of six seniors, two juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen. Head Coach Dana Altman is in his sixth year at Oregon with a record of 129-57 (.694) and he is in his 31st year overall as a collegiate head coach with a career mark of 662-324 (.671) series history This will mark the fifth meeting between UNLV and Oregon in men s basketball (Ore leads, 3-1). Oregon won the last meeting, 83-79, which was at the Thomas & Mack Center on Nov. 23, 2012. UNLV junior Ben Carter, who was at Oregon at the time, scored 12 points and had five rebounds in that game. Oregon has won the last two meetings in the series including, 76-72, in the 2007 NCAA Tournament s Sweet 16 in St. Louis, Mo. UNLV is 1-1 vs. Oregon in Las Vegas. The Runnin Rebels win came in 1976. This will mark just the second time the two schools will meet on a neutral floor. and now... UNLV Athletics didn t have to look too far to develop its 2015-16 Runnin Rebel marketing campaign: AND NOW... Your Runnin Rebels. The theme is in honor of the simple yet powerful phrase which has opened UNLV s famous pregame fireworks show for the past three decades: And now, your Runnin Rebels. Dick Calvert, who is in his fifth decade as the public address announcer for UNLV men s basketball, has used the phrase since the Thomas & Mack Center opened in 1983. The idea was to take our fans to that special moment at the Thomas & Mack Center right before tipoff, said UNLV Director of Athletics Tina Kunzer-Murphy. Rebel fans of all ages are familiar with Dick s voice and his unique way of letting us know it s time for the show. In many ways, Dick s `And now is a rallying cry for UNLV fans and we wanted to celebrate that. We wanted to recreate that unique feeling for fans during the famous pregame show. Head coach Dave Rice said he was a fan of the campaign concept immediately. The pregame show is important to our program, Rice said. `And now resonates with UNLV fans -- it s a part of our culture and has been for over 30 years. I still get excited every time the lights go down in the Thomas & Mack and I hear Dick say those words. It s a great moment for all Runnin Rebels. Kunzer-Murphy said the concept is also creative in introducing the 2015-16 squad. For many reasons, fans are excited about this year s edition of the Runnin Rebels, she said. While there are several key returnees, there are a lot of new faces and the program has a newness about it because of that. `AND NOW... It represents being excited about the possibilities. another Tough non-conference schedule on TaP UNLV had the third-toughest non-conference strength of schedule in the country last season (according to ESPN.com). Since the 3-point field goal was adopted by the NCAA in 1986-87, UNLV has converted at least one 3-pointer in all 948 games played. Entering the 2015-16 season, Kentucky was second with 939, just two games behind the Runnin Rebels. UNLV, Vanderbilt and Princeton are the only three schools in college basketball to have made at least one 3-pointer in every game played since the 3-point line was implemented. In UNLV s 948 games, the Runnin Rebels have made 6,285-of-17,742 (.354) shots from behind the arc. The Big West Conference experimented with the 3-point shot in the 1982-83, 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons. During that period, UNLV connected from 3-point range in 53 of the 64 games (the 3-pointer was used in some non-conference games). The Runnin Rebels sank 194-of-505 (.384) 3-point attempts during that time. With the experimental years included, the UNLV streak for games in which it has made at least one 3-point shot stands at 965. The last time the Runnin Rebels failed to make at least one 3-pointer came against Long Beach State on Jan. 25, 1986.
