Arizona Diamondbacks (11-3) vs. LOS ANGELES DODGERS (4-9) RHP Zack Godley (2-0, 0.64) vs. LHP Clayton Kershaw (0-2, 1.89) Sunday, April 15, 2018 1:10 p.m. Dodger Stadium Los Angeles, CA Game 14 Home Game 9 (3-5) Day Game 5 (1-3) TV: SportsNet LA, SNLA Spanish Radio: AM 570 (English); KTNQ 1020 AM (Spanish) LET THERE BE KERSH: The Dodgers this afternoon try to avoid their second three-game sweep this season at the hands of the Diamondbacks in the finale of a five-game homestand (1-3). The Dodgers have lost three consecutive games, are off to their worst start since 1994 and have now lost 11 consecutive regular season contests to Arizona, which is the longest regular-season losing streak for the Dodgers vs. any team since moving to Los Angeles: Dodgers, Longest Losing Streaks vs. Single Opponent - All-Time Team Opp Stk Start - End Brooklyn Superbas Cubs 16 7/28/1908-6/20/1909 Brooklyn Superbas Phillies 12 5/08/1905-9/16/1905 Brooklyn Dodgers Giants 12 10/2/1937-7/4/1938 Los Angeles Dodgers Diamondbacks 11 8/29/2017 - current SOURCE: STATS, LLC Following today s game, the Dodgers travel to San Diego for the first time in 2018 and play three games with the Padres Monday-Wednesday before returning home on Friday to face the Nationals in the beginning of a three-game series and sixgame homestand that also features three games against the NL East s Miami Marlins from April 23-25. The 11-game regular season skid against the Diamondbacks began on Aug. 29, 2017, but prior to that game, the Dodgers were 48-22 (.686) in games against Arizona dating to the start of the 2014 campaign, including a 27-8 mark at Dodger Stadium (.771). MAKING A COMEBACK: On Wednesday, Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. announced at a press conference at Dodger Stadium that Major League Baseball has awarded the 2020 All-Star Game Presented by Mastercard and accompanying All-Star Week festivities to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 2020 Midsummer Classic, which will be the 91 st edition in the event s history, will make its return to Los Angeles for the first time since 1980. This will mark the fourth time in franchise history that the Dodgers will hold the Midsummer Classic, including the third time in Los Angeles and the second at Dodger Stadium. Prior to the 1980 All-Star Game, the Dodgers played host to the Midsummer Classic in 1959 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and in 1949 at Ebbets Field. NO FREEBIES: The Dodgers 4.09 ERA ranks 11 th in the NL, but they are making the opposition earn it as their 33 walks are the fewest in the league. Just two teams in baseball have issued fewer free passes than the Dodgers, as the Oakland A s have walked 31 and the Cleveland Indians have walked 32 hitters. The Dodgers walked the fewest batters in the National League last season (442) and ranked second in the Majors to the Indians (406). THE ACE ON THE HILL: The Dodgers today will turn to three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw to snap the streak vs. the Snakes as the southpaw makes his fourth start of the season in search of his first victory. The last time Kershaw began a season with an 0-2 record was 2009 and he has been 0-3 just once in his career. That was in his rookie season of 2008 when he lost three starts from his Major League debut on May 25 to July 22, before recording his first-career victory on July 27, 2008 vs. Washington. Despite the 0-2 record, Kershaw has posted a 1.89 ERA (4 ER/19.0 IP) to go along with 19 strikeouts and three walks. The Dodgers have been able to score just three runs in his three starts this season. In 27 career starts against Arizona, Kershaw has gone 14-9 with a 2.56 ERA (48 ER/168.2 IP) and has held hitters to a.217 average, while striking out 193 against just 52 walks. The southpaw holds the lowest career ERA against the Snakes among qualifying pitchers with 140.0 IP vs. Arizona and ranks fourth all-time in wins against the D-backs. At Dodger Stadium, Kershaw has been flat-out dominant against Arizona, going 8-1 with a 1.54 ERA in 13 starts while limiting the Diamondbacks to a.205 batting average and a.267 MATCHUP vs. Diamondbacks Dodgers: 5th, NL West (6.5 GB) Diamondbacks: 1 st, NL West (4.0 GA) All-Time: LA leads series, 194-164 (101-76 at Dodger Stadium) 2018: LA trails, 0-5 (0-2 at Dodger Stadium) 4/2 at ARI: L, 7-8 (15) W: Salas L: Font 4/3 at ARI: L, 1-6 W: Godley L: Kershaw 4/4 at ARI: L, 0-3 W: Corbin L: Wood S: Boxberger 4/13 at LA: L, 7-8 W: Greinke L: Maeda S: Boxberger 4/14 at LA: L, 1-9 W: McFarland L: Hill I'M NOT CONCERNED WITH YOUR LIKING OR DISLIKING ME...ALL I ASK IS THAT YOU RESPECT ME AS A HUMAN BEING. : Today, the Dodgers, along with all of Major League Baseball, will celebrate the 71 st anniversary of the day Hall of Famer and Civil Rights pioneer Jackie Robinson broke baseball s color barrier and made his big league debut. On Friday, the club kicked off the festivities by hosting Breaking Barriers: A Legacy of Jackie Robinson for 100 students from John Muir High School (Jackie Robinson s alma mater), Garfield High School and others from select LAUSD schools, where students heard from leaders in sports, science and business (including Dodger skipper Dave Roberts) who hit notable milestones in their careers. The first 40,000 fans attending today s game will receive a special Jackie Robinson Day jersey, presented by Bank of America. Special pregame ceremonies will include recognition of several Jackie Robinson Foundation scholars and a ceremonial first pitch by former Jackie Robinson scholar, Brian Nelson, who currently serves as LA 2028 s Chief Legal Officer, Chief Compliance Officer, Corporate Secretary and Board Member. The legendary Don Newcombe will be honored prior to the game and lead the crowd in It s Time for Dodger Baseball. For the 12 th consecutive season, all on-field personnel will wear No. 42 throughout Major League Baseball. THE MAN IN A PINCH: Dodger second baseman Chase Utley has kicked off his 16 th Major League season in style, by slashing.321/.375/.464 in 11 games this year. In addition to his strong start, Utley and Kyle Farmer are currently tied for the most pinch hits in the big leagues with four apiece. Utley is 4-for-5 with two RBI off the bench and Farmer is 4-for-6 with a double and an RBI. Those two have helped the Dodger bench to a Major League-best.357 average (10-for-28) in pinch-hitting situations. SNAKE KILLERS: Dodger outfielder Matt Kemp has historically hit the Diamondbacks extremely well, posting a lifetime average.293 (177- for-604) in 162 games against Arizona. Kemp s 35 home runs against the Snakes are tied for the second most of all-time by an opposing player: Home Runs vs. Diamondbacks, All-Time Barry Bonds 39 (130 games) Matt Kemp 35 (162) Adrían González 35 (183) Todd Helton 35 (229) Brian Giles 27 (135) Carlos Gonzalez 27 (126) Troy Tulowitzki 27 (129) Dodger outfielder Yasiel Puig went 2-for-4 with two doubles last night and owns a career.333/.432/.559 slashline with five homers and 19 RBI in 33 games against the Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium. SIX FIX: The Dodger lineup has been scuffling of late offensively, hitting just.238 as a team, which is tied for seventh in the National League. However, the club has received excellent production out of the No. 6 hole thus far: MLB, Highest On-Base Pct.
