Division I competitors Alaska Anchorage and San Jose State join the Falcons at 7 p.m. in Brougham Pavilion. Friday marks this season s first meeting with Anchorage while the Spartans outpointed SPU 192.825 to 189.875 on Jan. 29 in San Jose, Calif. This is the 43rd season of intercollegiate gymnastics competition for the Falcons and their 41st under Coach Laurel Tindall. Welcome Back: A large contingent of former SPU gymnasts will be in attendance at Friday s meet to take part in the annual Alumni Night festivities. Alums should call 206-281-2744 for details. Those former gymnasts helped the Falcons win three national team championships (1986, 1992 and 1997), 28 individual titles and 187 All-America awards. Get Your Tickets: Tickets to attend Seattle Pacific gymnastics events are available at Brougham Pavilion on meet nights and are priced at $6 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. Groups of 10 or more may qualify for special general admission rates by calling (206) 281-2085 in advance. SPU students and staff are admitted free with valid i.d. Friday s Field: Both opponents from Friday s three-team field are NCAA Division I competitors. San Jose State boasts a season-high score of 195.300 and is ranked 44th nationally with an average of 193.732. Alaska Anchorage is listed No. 77 nationally with a high of 192.275 and 191.313 average. Division II member SPU ranks 56th among all teams (193.900/190.914) in the rankings that are dominated by Division I squads. The Falcons are rated No. 7 among teams that will vie for the USA Gymnastics (USAG) collegiate championship on April 8-10 in St. Charles, Mo., and eight teams receive berths. Magnificent Maria: Senior Maria Hundley is SPU s most decorated gymnast, having won five national championships (2014-vault, bars, beam; 2015-bars, beam). She added the allaround to her repertoire this year and won it Saturday with a 39.200 that nearly reached the school record of 39.250 established by Debra Huss on March 19, 2005. The SPU-record score of 9.875 has been achieved nine times by a Falcons vaulter, and Hundley accounted for four of those. The SPU senior won seven event titles in meets this season and one allaround victory. She posted the Falcons top vault score in all seven meets. Gym Shorts: SPU sophomore Ariana Harger twice won meet all-around titles and picked up a floor title on Jan. 9... Junior Kristi Hayashida was the beam winner in the Jan. 9 season opener... Twelve of the 14 gymnasts that competed this year for SPU achieved at least once score of 9.50... Six Falcons earned All-America acclaim in eight categories at the 2015 USAG championships, including returnees Maria Hundley (V, UB, BB), Kristi Hayashida (BB), Tracie Villanueva (UB) and Ariana Harger (FX). Last Week: Maria Hundley was the top beam performer, tied the school vault mark and nearly broke the record to win the all-around for Seattle Pacific, which had a season-high 193.900 to place third at the Northern Illinois tri-meet on Feb. 19. The Falcons equaled the eighth-highest team total in history and topped, by 0.85, the previous season-high of 193.050. Hundley amassed 39.20 points in the second-best all-around effort ever by an SPU gymnast. Included in Friday s four-event total was Hundley s second-place mark of 9.875 on the vault that tied the SPU standard on that apparatus. She topped Friday s beam field with a season-high 9.80 and teammate Tracie Villanueva was third with a 9.750. Maryanna Peterson was third on bars (9.85) and Ariana Harger third on floor (9.875). Next Week: SPU has two upcoming meets in a three-day span, starting on Friday, Mar. 4 at Oregon State. The Falcons host Washington on Monday, Mar. 7 in their final home meet. A 16-gymnast roster, down from 20 last season, takes on an ambitious schedule that includes 17 NCAA Division I opponents. The Division II Falcons seek to improve upon the third-place national result they accomplished at the 2014 and 2015 USAG Collegiate Championships. We have a small team, but everybody has the ability to contribute, said Coach Laurel Tindall, in her 41st season at SPU. The girls are rising to the challenge. We have a strong returning group and have the potential to do really well. Six Falcons garnered All-America acclaim last year and four of them return in 2016. Heading that list is five-time national champion Maria Hundley, a senior who won the uneven bars and balance beam gold medals last spring and was sixth on the vault. Hundley has added a floor exercise routine with hopes of challenging in the all-around. A pair of juniors who were 2015 bronze medalists are back; Kristi Hayashida (beam) and Tracie Villanueva (bars). Also returning is sophomore Ariana Harger, who placed fourth on the floor. SPU benefits from the return of three-event standout Lauren Glover, a junior whose 2015 injury prevented her from competing until the championships in April. Tindall projects the balance beam as perhaps SPU s strongest this year We have a really strong beam team this year with all returners. That is a tough lineup for any of the freshmen to crack. A fantastic group of five newcomers will find places to contribute. This year s freshmen class brings a high level of gymnastics to the SPU program. Each of these girls are passionate about SPU gymnastics and are motivated to work hard to be the best they can be for the team. Two newbies in particular showed promise during preseason practice. Itzia San Roman is a gymnast from Canada who has the ability to contribute in everything as does Maryanna Peterson. SPU is in pursuit of its 34th championship meet berth in the last 35 years. Tindall and her staff of Sarah Jean Marshall and Carly Dockendorf intend to extend that streak and coach their tinier team to great heights. Coach Tindall: Laurel Tindall (Anderson) was there the very first time a group of Seattle Pacific gymnasts marched onto the competition floor in 1974. Now, four decades later, she still is an integral part of a program that she helped nurture and lead to a prominent spot on the national scene since taking the coaching reigns in 1976. Whether as an athlete, coach or international-level judge, Tindall has spent a lot of time at the top of the gymnastics world. As she enters her 41st year as head coach, Tindall s SPU teams have won three national championships (1997, 1992, 1986). Falcon athletes garnered 28 national crowns, one of which she earned on the vault in 1975. Tindall has been named the national Coach of the Year four times, most recently in 2003. And, in a tribute to all of her accomplishments in the SPU gym, Tindall was a charter member of the Falcon Legends Hall of Fame. 2015 Recap: The Falcons forged one of the finest seasons in school history in 2015. They placed third at nationals as a team and collected eight All-America certificates at the USAG Collegiate Championships. Maria Hundley won individual event crowns on the bars and beam, defending her titles. Including a vaulting gold in 2014, Hundley has racked up five national event titles, the most in SPU history. In the USAG finals, the Falcons posted a third-place mark of 194.225 that is the fourth-highest score in school history. SPU placed fifth at the MPSF Championships with a mark of 192.700. 2016 Seattle Pacific Women s Gymnastics Roster Name (pronunciation) Events Hgt Yr Exp Hometown (High School) Brittany Atchison ( AATCH ih sun ) V-UB-FX 5-3 So. 1V Biloxi, MS (Biloxi) Breanna Beltran ( bree ANN uh, BELL tran ) V-UB-BB 5-3 Jr. 2V Modesto, CA (Enochs) Kylee Gauna ( GOWN uh ) AA 5-2 Fr.
