The Varsity won 72 63. The JV and Freshman A teams also won. While the Sophomore and Freshman B teams did not win they played extremely hard and were only a few possessions away from winning their games. Outstanding players of the game were Felipe Salinas (14 points, 5 rebounds, 6 steals, 3 assists), Elton Dyer (9 points, 6 rebounds, 7 steals, 4 assists), & Jose Castillo (13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, 3 assists). Sub Varsity outstanding players were Nick Hernandez (JV), Eddie Cantu (Sophomore) Bennie Hamilton (9A), & AJ Dimas (9B) The Trojans also played CE King over the Thanksgiving break. The 9B and JV teams easily won their games while the 9A made a furious come back to lose a close game. The Varsity played well in the first half against CE King, but the pressure defense by the Panthers subdued a tired Trojan team in the second half. South Houston lost 60 88. The Trojans final game of the week was on Saturday against Fort Bend Clements. The Trojans once again had a strong start of the game only trailing by 6 at the half. In the second half of the game the team was diminished by injuries and fouls, could not over come the Rangers. South Houston Lost 81 60. Page 2 Trojan Hoops Deer Park JV Tournament Recap The JV team participated in the Deer Park JV Tournament over the Thanksgiving Holiday Break. In a very strong field they came in 3rd place. To get to the semifinals they beat Deer Park s second team, as well St. Thomas. In the semifinals they lost to a very tough Pearland team. In the 3rd place game they beat Deer Park s JV team for the second time in 2 weeks. This year s JV team is enjoying one of the best starts in a long time. Texas Invitational Recap The Boys Basketball program would like to thank everyone that contributed to make this year s Texas Invitational an exceptional event. Our faculty, staff and students brought in an assortment of foods that were quickly devoured by the visiting coaches, volunteers and officials. The number of people that helped to make this year s tournament the best so far is too numerous to name individually. We would like to thank them collectively as a program. Without these contributions, the tournament would not be as successful as it is. Every coach I spoke to commented on how they thought our hospitality room was the best in the tournament and how friendly all of our volunteers were. Once again, thank you for making the Texas Invitational the best tournament in Texas.

Volume 1, Issue 3 November 27, 2012 Page 3 Game One of the Texas Invitational vs. Klein Oak The Trojans fell behind in the first quarter and could not quite stage the comeback they needed. South Houston played extremely hard throughout the game and despite the loss showed that Trojan pride never dies. The final score of the game was South Houston 68 and Klein Oak 79. Trojans with outstanding performances were: Elton Dyer 17 points, 7 Rebounds Tray Rhone 14 points, 3 steals Bradley Deanda 10 points Jacolby Rogers 7 assists, 3 steals Game Two of the Texas Invitational vs. Houston Memorial In front of the student body the Trojans led from the beginning of the game. The pressure defense by the Trojans wore down the Memorial Mustangs and lead to some easy fast break baskets. Despite being the second game in less than 6 hours the Trojans were on fire from the outside hitting 8 three point shots. The Trojans won easily 66 39. The win put the Trojans in the Silver Bracket. Trojans with outstanding performances were: Elton Dyer 15 points, 6 rebounds Tray Rhone 14 points, 4 steals Erric Cabrera 8 points Felipe Salinas 8 points Game Three of the Texas Invitational vs. JJ Pearce In the first game of the Silver Bracket, the Trojans were matched up against JJ Pearce. As hot as the Trojans were on Thursday afternoon, they were that cold on Friday morning. Despite a poor shooting game the Trojans only lost by 3 points 40 43. Elton Dyer 13 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals 9 deflections Felipe Salinas 12 points, 6 deflections Game Four of the Texas Invitational vs. Houston Chavez The next game vs. Houston Chavez was as exciting as a basketball game can get. The two teams traded leads throughout the game and neither team lead by more than 8 points. Despite Bradley Deanda injuring his elbow in the second half and Elton Dyer fouling out in the middle of the 4 th quarter the Trojans were leading by 2 with two seconds left in the game. The Trojans fouled a Chavez player on a three point shot with 0.30 seconds left in the game. The Chavez player hit all 3 free throws to give them a 1 point lead. Byron Hodges completed the pass of his life to a streaking Tray Rhone down the left sideline. Tray jumped in the air to catch the pass with 2 defenders around him and in one motion caught the pass and shot it off the backboard for the winning basket as the clock expired giving South Houston the 81 80 victory. Outstanding performances were: Tray Rhone 18 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 3 assists Byron Hodges 17 points Jose Castillo 16 points, 8 rebounds To see the game winning shot go to YouTube and type in South Houston Last Second Shot Game Five of the Texas Invitational vs. Mission Sharyland (Consolation Championship) In the Consolation Championship Game the Trojans battled back and forth with Mission Sharyland before finally securing victory 61 57. The game was tied at the end of the first half. The Trojans came out in the second half determined to bring home the Trophy and caused some early turnovers that gave the Trojans a3 point lead at the end of the 3 rd quarter. The continued defensive pressure applied by the Trojans finally subdued Sharyland. Sharyland was forced to foul down the stretch and the Trojans converted their free throws and came home with the trophy. Outstanding performances were: Elton Dyer 20 Points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists 6 deflections Felipe Salinas 12 points, 4 assists, 4 steals, 5 deflections, 1 charge Ladarius Benford 9 rebounds

TROJAN HOOPS Leadership is responsibility. There comes a point when one must make a decision. Are YOU willing to do what it takes to push the right buttons to elevate those around you? If the answer is YES, are you willing to push the right buttons even if it means being perceived as the villain? Here's where the true responsibility of being a leader lies. Sometimes you must prioritize the success of the team ahead of how your own image is perceived. The ability to elevate those around you is more than simply sharing the ball or making teammates feel a certain level of comfort. It's pushing them to find their inner beast, even if they end up resenting you for it at the time. I'd rather be perceived as a winner than a good teammate. I wish they both went hand in hand all the time but that's just not reality. I have nothing in common with lazy people who blame others for their lack of success. Great things come from hard work and perseverance. No excuses. This is my way. It might not be right for YOU but all I can do is share my thoughts. It s on YOU to figure out which leadership style suits you best. - Kobe Bryant

TROJAN HOOPS South Houston Basketball Lettering Policy The following is a list of the requirements for earning a Varsity letter in the Boys Basketball program. 1. Must have played in at least 5 Varsity district games. 2. Must have completed the year in good standing with the basketball program. 3. Be a manager for two years. 4.
