The Spartans closed the non-conference season splitting a pair of home games with a loss to Nebraska (81-55) and a win over Southern Oregon (89-87 OT). San José State returned just one starter and seven total letterwiners to the bench this season, from a team that went 11-21 overall and 7-11 in Mountain West play last year. Sophomore guard Taylor Turney leads the Spartan offense with 13.5 points per game. Just behind her, senior guard Myzhanique Ladd averages 12.5 points per game, while adding a team-high 7.1 rebounds per game. Overall, SJSU is averaging 72.8 points per game, while giving up 88.2 from its opponents. As a team, the Spartans are shooting 37.4 percent (280- of-749) from the floor, 34.9 percent (97-of-278) from the 3-point line and 66.1 percent (144- of-218) from the free throw line. Jaime Craighead is in her fifth season as the head coach at San José State, where she has an overall record of 53-82. With shared time in the WAC and the Mountain West, Utah State and San José State have a long-running history of competition. The Aggies lead the all-time series against the Spartans, 16-9. USU holds a dominating lead (10-2) in games played in Logan, but the series is tied, 6-6, in games played in San Jose. Last season, USU and SJSU played just one game, with the Aggies winning the contest, 82-78, in Logan. SCOUTING THE AZTECS San Diego State ended the non-conference season with a 6-5 record, closing things out in a 77-64 loss at UC Santa Barbara. The Aztecs will open Mountain West play against Wyoming on Thursday, before making the trip to Logan. The Aztecs welcomed back four of the team s starters from a year ago, along with five other letterwinners. Senior guard McKynzie Fort, a preseason all-mountain West player, leads San Diego State on the court, where she averages 15.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. As a team, the Aztecs are averaging 66.0 points per game, just behind its 66.5 points allowed. Overall, SDSU is shooting 39.2 percent (268-of-683) from the floor, 35.4 percent (91-of-257) from the 3-point line and 66.9 percent (99-of-148) from the free throw line. Stacie Terry is in her fifth season as the head coach at San Diego State, where she has an overall record of 54-78. Aside from a pair of games in the 1980 and 1984 seasons, the series between Utah State and San Diego State is limited to shared time in the Mountain West since the 2013-14 season. The Aztecs hold a slight lead over the Aggies, 5-4, but Utah State has had good luck at home, leading that series, 3-1. Last season, the teams split the pair of conference contests, with each team winning on its home court. KICKING OFF THE CONFERENCE All-time, Utah State is 11-14 in conference openers. Last season, the Aggies opened Mountain West play in a loss at Boise State (76-56). Utah State was 5-3 in Western Athletic Conference openers, 0-2 in Big West openers and is 1-3 in Mountain West openers. Since the reinstatement of the Utah State program, the Aggies are 6-8 in conference openers. SUMMING UP THE PRESEASON Utah State women s basketball ended the non-conference season with a 2-9 record, with wins against Dixie State and at BYU. The Aggies played five games against in-state opponents, going 2-3 in those contests. Utah State played games in three different time zones and against teams from seven different athletic conferences. AGAINST THE MOUNTAIN WEST Utah State has an 84-139 all-time record against current members of the Mountain West. Entering their fifth year as a member of the conference, the Aggies have gone 30-42 in Mountain West play. Utah State has winning records against Air Force (8-2), Nevada (16-11) and San José State (16-9). THE SEASON OF SPLITS Last season, Utah State ended the Mountain West campaign with an even 9-9 record. To go with the split record, the Aggies split the season series with five conference opponents during league play. Utah State went 1-1 against Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, San Diego State and UNLV. The Aggies played single games against Fresno State and San José State, winning both. Utah State had one season sweep in conference play, posting a pair of wins over Nevada. Conversely, the Aggies were swept by Wyoming and New Mexico. 2 2017-18 UTAH STATE WOMEN S BASKETBALL

PRESEASON PICKS Utah State women s basketball was picked sixth in the Mountain West women s basketball preseason poll as voted on by a panel of the league s 11 head coaches and media representatives. After claiming the tournament title at the end of the 2016-17 season, Boise State was picked to finish first in the league with 221 total points and seven first-place votes. Wyoming was tabbed second, as the Cowgirls earned 216 points and six first-place votes. Reigning regular-season champion Colorado State placed third in the poll with 211 points and six first-place nods. New Mexico (186 points) and UNLV (185 points) rounded out the top five with four and two first-place votes, respectively. Utah State was tabbed sixth with 136 points, followed by Fresno State in seventh with 117 points and San Diego State in eighth with 102 points. San José State (61 points), Nevada (60 points) and Air Force (29 points) concluded the poll in ninth, 10th and 11th places, respectively. THE BATTLE OF THE YOUNG Utah State and San José State boast two of the youngest rosters throughout the NCAA. The Aggie roster is made of 83.3 percent underclassmen with just two juniors representing the upperclassmen, ranking as the second-youngest team in the country. San José State has 80 percent of its roster made of freshmen and sophomores, the fourth-youngest roster in the NCAA. UNC Greensboro has the youngest team in the country with 87.7 percent of its roster as underclassmen. THE CORNERS OF THE WORLD Between the rosters of Utah State, San José State and San Diego State, there are players from six countries outside of the United States. Utah State has four players on its team from Australia. San José State boasts one player each from Germany and Sweden, while San Diego State has recruited players from Spain, England and Nigeria. FAMILIAR FACES Utah State junior center Deja Mason and San Diego State sophomore forward Monique Terry are both natives of San Antonio, Texas, and played together at Brennan HS. BLOCK THEM OUT Like she has done each year of her career, junior center Deja Mason leads the Aggies in the block column this season. In the 11 games this year, Mason has tallied 20 blocks. She now has 110 in her career, which ranks fifth all-time at Utah State. She needs 24 more blocks to set the career block record. Mason tallied 38 blocks as a freshman and 52 last season. Sophomore guard/forward Hailey Bassett is second on the team and the conference in blocks with 14, already surpassing her season total a year ago. Additionally, Utah State leads all conference teams in blocks, averaging 4.3 per game. Mason and Bassett rank first and third in the Mountain West standings, respectively. DUFFICY DOUBLES DOWN Whenever sophomore guard/forward Shannon Dufficy tallies double-digit numbers in points or rebounds, she does it in both. Dufficy has put together five double-double performances this season, doing so at UC Irvine, Southern Utah and BYU, as well as in home games against Dixie State and Denver. New Mexico s Jaisa Nunn leads the Mountain West with seven double-doubles this season, while UNLV s Katie Powell also has four. Dufficy is tied for second among active Mountain West players with 10 double-doubles in her career. Boise State forward Shalen Shaw leads all conference player with 16 career double-doubles. STARTING LINEUP SHIFT Utah State has used five different starting lineups this season. Rachel Brewster and Shannon Dufficy are the only Aggies to have started all 11 games, but Hailey Bassett, Jessie Geer, Deja Mason, Victoria Price, Eliza West and Olivia West have each seen some time among the starting five. THE STEADY STARTER Including the nine games this season, junior guard Rachel Brewster has started 46-straight games for the Aggies. Brewster started all but one game her freshman season, and has been among the starting five in every contest since. In all, Brewster has started 73 of the 74 games of her USU career. Brewster s 46-consecutive starts are the most by a USU player since Devyn Christensen started 56-straight games over the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. UP NEXT Utah State will open 2018 in a pair of Mountain West games. The Aggies will play at Fresno State on Wednesday, Jan. 3, at 8 p.m. (MT) and will host UNLV on Saturday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m. MEDIA CREDENTIALS Credentials for Utah State home women s basketball games will be issued through the Utah State Athletic Media Relations Office for working press only. We urge all members of the media to send their credential requests to Megan McCuistion, Assistant Media Relations Coordinator well in advance to ensure the availability of credentials. THE LAST TIME OUT Bassett s strong play continued to start the second quarter, as she opened the period with a jumper and followed up with a pair of free throws. West added a bucket of her own, while the Utes went nearly three minutes without a basket. Unfortunately, the Aggie offense added just one layup in that span. A shot from behind the arc sparked a 7-0 run for Utah, while the Aggies were held scoreless for the last 3:32 of the quarter. Utah took its run into the locker room with a 42-26 halftime lead. Bassett ended the USU drought on the first possession of the second half, before Emily Potter netted four quick points for the Utes. West continued her streak for the Aggies with another pair of layups, but the team would go another 3:26 without a point. Junior guard Rachel Brewster briefly ended the drought for Utah State with a shot from 3-point range, but those would be the last points of the quarter with 4:32 to play. The Aggie defense held Utah to its lowest-scoring quarter of the night, but conversely, the Utes did the same to Utah State, leading 55-35 after three. Utah opened the fourth quarter with a quick five points to force a USU timeout. Out of the stop, West got the Aggies back on the scoreboard with a trey, as the teams continued to trade shots back-and-forth. After West reached the 20-point mark on a jumper, redshirt sophomore guard Lindsey Jensen got in on the action with a layup, while making contact to draw the foul. The teams shot an even 6-for-15 from the field in the first quarter, contributing to the alternate leads on the scoreboard. Price evened the score one more time with her first layup for the day, but a final pair of free throws for the Pioneers gave Denver the 19-17 lead at the end of the quarter. After going more than three minutes without a field goal, sophomore guard/forward Hailey Bassett got USU back into it with a putback. Utah State then had the final possession of the half, where Brewster ended up with the ball and hit a shot from 3-point range to give the Aggies the 32-30 halftime lead. The back-and-forth feel of the game picked right back up as the third quarter got underway. The Pioneers out-scored the Aggies, 6-2, early on, but Utah State responded with another four points to even things out. DU again scored five-straight before Dufficy hit a 3-point shot to tie the score at 41 at the media timeout. The lead would change sides another five times before the end of the quarter, as both offenses fought to stay on top. Sophomore guard Jessie Geer had the final say of the quarter, giving Utah State the 50-49 lead with a shot from 3-point range. After the quick-scoring through the game, the fourth quarter had a much slower start to it, as neither team scored for the first two-and-a-half minutes. West ended the drought with a 3-pointer to give the Aggies their largest lead of the day, but Denver answered with a layup on the next possession. Price then hit her first 3-point shot of the season before the Pioneers Johnson went on an 8-0 run of her own for DU s biggest lead of the game. Price ended the skid with a single free throw, but West brought an end to the field goal struggles as she hit her fourth trey of the game. Denver added one more shot from the charity stripe, but the dagger came from Dufficy at the 3-point line, tying the score at 63 with 2.8 seconds to play. The Pioneers last-chance shot missed the basket, sending the game to overtime. Utah State came out strong in the overtime period, scoring back-to-back baskets before the Pioneers could score. Utah native Dezz Ramos led the Spartans with 37 points, while two others scored in double digits. In a fast-paced game, scoring started early and quickly. Though San José State scored first, the Aggies responded with six-straight points to take the lead. The teams traded shots back-andforth through the early minutes of the first quarter. Out of the media timeout, the USU defense stepped up and started to hold off the Spartans. San José State was limited to a single free throw in the final minutes of the quarter, giving the Aggies the opportunity to build up their lead. Utah State ended the first quarter with a 21-13 advantage. The Spartans opened the second quarter with their first field goal in nearly four minutes, but that would be their only points for another three. In that time, the Aggies went on a 10-0 run to build up their lead. Down the stretch of the quarter, Brewster went on a run of her own, scoring 10-straight points for the Aggies. Her shooting spurt was broken up by a layup from Mason, who reached double figures for the second time this season. The Spartans found a bit of an offensive surge then, scoring eight-straight points. The teams alternated baskets over the final two minutes, while Bassett had the final say of the half with a layup just seconds before the buzzer to give USU a 49-33 lead at the break. San José State spread out its offensive capabilities a bit early in the third, as three players contributed to score the team s first nine points. The Aggies stayed in it, fitting shots in between the Spartan makes. Bassett became the third USU player to reach double figures with a layup at the 5:35 mark, followed by freshman guard Jessie Geer s second 3-pointer of the game. The Aggies were then held without a point for just over three minutes, while the Spartans cut into USU s lead. With what looked to be the last possession, SJSU had the chance to get back within single digits, but a last-second turnover kept Utah State up, 61-51 at the end of the third. The fourth quarter started out quickly in the Spartans favor, as they jumped out on an 8-0 run behind two 3-point shots. Followed with a pair of free throws, San José State was back within two, the closest the score had been since midway through the first. The surge from the Spartans continued, as Ramos drilled a trey to tie the score at 65 at the 6:09 mark. San José then momentarily took its first lead of the night, but a layup from Mason tied things up again, while Bassett added two free throws to out the score back in the Aggies favor. Bassett followed with back-to-back layups to match her career-high, while Brewster reached 20 points for the fourth time this season with a jumper at the 1:22 mark. The Aggie defense held San José State to just two free throws over a five-minute period, a stretch the Spartans ended with another trey. Seven Utah State free throws in the final minute, interrupted only by one last 3-pointer from Ramos, secured the win for the Aggies. Overall, Utah State shot 41.3 percent (31-of-75) from the field, including 25.0 percent (4-of-16) from the 3-point line, and was 76.2 percent (16-of-21) from the free throw line. San José State shot 40.0 percent (28-of-70) from the field, 38.7 percent (12-of-31) from behind the arc and 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the free throw line. 2,1 SJ 6 11 8 21 11 US 44 4 20 13 32 Score tied - 3 times. AGAINST THE COMPETITION SAN JOSÉ STATE Last San Jose Meeting Feb. 27, 2016 San José State 83, Utah State 65 Despite a high-scoring, strong shooting first half, Utah State women s basketball dropped a conference road contest at San José State Saturday, falling to the Spartans, 83-65. Freshman guard Rachel Brewster was the top player for the Aggies Saturday. Though she fouled out in the final minutes of the game, she was the leading scorer with 16 points, as well as the top rebounder with eight on the day. Just behind Brewster, sophomore guard Funda Nakkasoglu tallied 15 points and a team-best seven assists. Senior forward Julianne Anchling also scored in double figures with 10 points. Emily Vann was tops for the Spartans with 20 points, while three other SJSU players tallied double digit points. Despite a shaky tip-off, both teams jumped out to a hot start Saturday. By the first media timeout, Utah State used an 8-0 run to build up its lead, up 20-13 at the stop. Out of the break, however, San José State went on a 9-0 run to catch up to the Aggies. Powered by the Spartans power from the 3-point line, the score was tied at 25 at the end of the first quarter. A minute into the second quarter, sophomore center Hannah Hutchins finally ended the Aggies scoring skid with the team s first bucket in nearly four minutes. Three straight shots from Brewster from the same point on the court helped the Aggies rebuild momentum and get the lead back in Utah State s favor. Over the final five minutes of the second quarter, the teams traded field goals back-and-forth, splattered with several 3-point shots for both teams. A trey from Anchling put the Aggies down just two, going into the halftime break down 47-45. Utah State shot 60.7 percent (17-of-28) from the floor in the first half, the highest shooting percentage from the team in a single half this season. Included in that were six 3-point shots, as the team went 6-of-9 (66.7 percent) from behind the arc. Those six made shots already bested the team s per game average from the 3-point line, as well as set a new season-best percentage in a half. Utah State s 45 points made for the highest-scoring half for the team since the Jan. 9 game against New Mexico, when the team also scored 45 in the first half. The second half didn t open with the same speed and success for the Aggies as the first half had. USU totaled just six points in the third quarter, as it took until the 3:08 mark for the team to make a field goal. Hutchins had a pair of free throws early in the quarter, while Nakkasoglu added another two in the final minute, but the single layup came from Brewster. After three quarters, San José State led, 61-51. Utah State vs San Jose State 02/27/16 2:00 p.m. at San Jose, Calif. AGAINST THE COMPETITION SAN DIEGO STATE Last Logan Meeting Jan. 14, 2017 Utah State 53, San Diego State 47 Utah State women s basketball got back in the win column Saturday, as the Aggies defeated San Diego State, 53-47, in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. Sophomore guard Rachel Brewster was the all-around leader for the Aggies Saturday, ending the game with 18 points and nine rebounds. She was joined in double figures by senior forward Antoina Robinson, who added 12 points. Freshman forward Shannon Dufficy added another eight rebounds, contributing to the team s 43-38 rebound advantage over the Aztecs. Back in the starting lineup for the first time since Dec. 3, Robinson started the day on a high note, scoring the first two field goals for the Aggies. After a bit of back-and-forth from both teams to start the quarter, the Utah State defense held the Aztecs out of the media timeout. San Diego State missed nine-straight field goal attempts over a five-minute stretch, while the Aggies went on a 9-0 run. The Aztecs ended their skid in the final minute of the quarter, but USU led, 19-9 after one. Utah State maintained its control through the early minutes of the second quarter, but the Aztecs quickly started to gain some traction. The SDSU defense held the Aggies scoreless for nearly five minutes before freshman guard Eliza West ended the skid. In the meantime, the Aztecs chipped away at USU s lead, pulling within three points two different times. With a long pass from Dufficy, Brewster threw up a last-second shot from behind the arc, draining the 3 and giving Utah State a 28-22 lead at the halftime break. Returning to the court, Brewster picked up where she had left off, scoring the first field goal of the half in the early seconds. She and Robinson each added another layup, the final points on either end for nearly three minutes. A single free throw for San Diego State ended the offensive skid, but the Aggies maintained their lead. Brewster then ended the Aggies struggle, hitting the first field goal in the team s last eight attempts. It wasn t until the 3:05 mark of the third quarter that the Aggies made their first trip to the free throw line, where Brewster went 2-of-3. USU was again held scoreless for the final three minutes of the quarter, while the Aztecs added seven-straight points, down 38-34 at the end of the third. Robinson snapped USU s skid on the first possession of the fourth quarter. Layups from freshman guard Jessie Geer and Brewster followed, rebuilding the Aggies lead to double figures. With a layup from Dufficy, Utah State led by 12, matching its biggest advantage of the game. The Aztecs didn t score their first points of the quarter until the 4:53 mark, with a breakaway layup on a steal, also drawing the and-1. Robinson reached double figures for the second time this season after the media timeout, but SDSU answered with back-toback 3-point shots to cut the Aggies lead to three. As the final minute counted down, the Aztecs added two free throws to come within one possession. After timeouts from both benches, the Aggies drew a pair of fouls off San Diego State, where Robinson and Brewster combined for four free throws in the last 20 seconds of the game.
