Parent, Player, and Cach Guide Wrk Hard, Play Hard, Have Fun
THE OBA : The fllwing pages are designed t tell yu, the cach, the parent, and/r the player what the OBA is all abut: wh we are, hw t cntact us, what prgrams we have, and hw we interact and supprt yu as a cach, the parent, and/r the player. This dcument shuld be treated as a guideline fr thse areas that are cvered. OBA Missin: Owatnna Basketball Assciatin is designed t prvide an pprtunity fr bys and girls in grades 4th thrugh 8th t play a mre cmpetitive game f basketball including traveling turnaments. Emphasis is placed n player develpment, sprtsmanship, and teamwrk. This is accmplished thrugh establishing cmpetitive teams, wh are led by knwledgeable caches, with a gal f develping the players t be ready t cmpete at the next highest level. PROGRAM DETAILS: The OBA ffers a traveling prgram fr girls and bys t participate in advanced, cmpetitive, traveling basketball turnaments in grades 4-8. Depending n the number f players, teams, and ability levels, sme interested players may nt be selected fr a traveling team. In this situatin, thse players are encuraged t cntinue their skill develpment via available Park and Rec (4 th -6 th grade) r Kid s First prgrams (7 th -8 th grade), r St. Mary s. REGISTRATION/COMMITMENT: OBA hlds registratin ne time per year, typically in late September fr the fllwing fall/winter seasn. Registratin is held as a stand-alne registratin perid and cmmunicated via e-mail (fr thse within the OBA database) and via varius advertisements. The registratin deadline is cmmunicated and is very imprtant because OBA uses the registratin deadline t decide hw many teams will be frmed at each grade level, and then begins t enter thse teams in turnaments fr the upcming seasn. Teams are frmed fr girls and bys in grades 4th - 8th grade based upn number r participants and verall talent levels. If multiple 4 th grade teams are required, it is the intent t make them equal teams in terms f talent and capability. 5 th thrugh 8 th grade teams will be frmed as A and B teams. Teams cnsist f 8-10 players using histrical data, availability f gym time, and prgram budget t determine hw many teams will be frmed by OBA. Due t the significant time cmmitment required, players shuld nt participate n ther nnbasketball sprts teams during the traveling basketball seasn. OBA practices and games shuld be the pririty. Failure t fllw this level f cmmitment results in difficult situatins fr teams with fewer players and is unfair t yur teammates. OBA strives t partner with ther Owatnna based basketball pprtunities t ffer the highest levels f participatin pssible.
EVALUATIONS: Owatnna high schl caching staff and OBA nn-parent caches/bard members will cnduct the evaluatins. Evaluatins will cnsist f varius individual, small grup, and team drills/scrimmages. Players will be independently evaluated by using drills, such as layups, dribbling, and shting including 1 n 1. In additin, players will participate in 3 n 3, 4 n 4, and 5 n 5 scrimmages, with rtating teammates and ppnents. Evaluatrs are nt nly lking fr the tallest, fastest, r players with the best jump sht. A successful and winning team includes players that can rebund, play defense, pass the ball, and be a gd persn/teammate. Each player must attend all evaluatins sessins fr his/her age grup. Any deviatin frm this requirement must be apprved by the President r high schl head cach in advance. Players are expected t alter their schedules t attend evaluatins. Injured players shuld als ntify bth the President and high schl head cach in advance and shuld plan t attend each evaluatin sessin as an bserver. Players being evaluated shuld wear a t-shirt with their last name n the back f the shirt. Players are encuraged t bring a water bttle - n sprts r energy drinks. Parents are nt allwed in the gym during evaluatins. Team assignments will be cmmunicated via the OBA website at a time t be annunced at evaluatins. Players wh d nt make a team will receive a full refund and these players are encuraged t sign-up fr the Park and Rec r Yuth First prgrams fr their respective grade/age. Fr players that make a team, n refunds will be issued nce evaluatins are cmpleted.
EVALUATION STRATEGY: OBA makes use f the fllwing strategies during evaluatins: 1) equal pprtunity; 2) team play and skill assessment; 3) independent evaluatin. Equal Opprtunity: Team grupings fr scrimmages during evaluatins are changed several times s that each player will play with and against many different players. An effrt is made t equitably distribute height n the scrimmage teams. Team Play and Skill Assessment: Drills are used t prvide an pprtunity fr evaluatrs t bserve basic skills. Scrimmages give evaluatrs a chance t bserve skills, alng with a player s abilities t use these skills in a game-like situatin. Scrimmages als allw evaluatrs t bserve a player s apprach t team play. Previus knwledge f player s skills, wrk ethic, and capabilities based n bservatins at summer camps, pen gyms, skills camps, r any ther basketball related activities. Team Placement: Team placement is 100% decided upn via the evaluatin prcess by the high schl staff and nn-parent OBA caches. UNIFORMS: OBA intrduces new unifrms as needed. Unifrms will be an additinal cst at registratin when yur child is in need f a new unifrm. OBA wrks with lcal vendrs t select updated and affrdable unifrm slutins. PRACTICE TIMES AND TOURNAMENT SELECTIONS: OBA hlds practices at OJHS, Willw Creek, OHS, available elementary schls, and suitable fr-rent facilities. Unfrtunately, there is a shrtage f gym space and a number f cnflicting events which makes practice scheduling the single mst difficult task that faces OBA. OBA strives t schedule arund significant schl events, schedules yunger ages fr earlier in the evening, etc. We strive t publish practice schedules 30 days in advance when pssible. Turnaments are selected based n the fllwing: - Level f cmpetitin - Lcatin (ne hur r less cmmute) - One day r tw day? - Histry have we received favrable feedback in the past? - Prgram d we have a gd relatinship with their prgram? - Schedule is it a weekend we re lking t fill? - Other WHAT DOES OBA DO WITH REGISTRATION FEES? Registratin fees are used t: ffset the csts f turnament fees, caches, equipment, facilities, etc OBA WEB SITE AND OTHER COMMUNICATIONS Althugh OBA distributes infrmatin by e-mail thrughut the year t participants, t get the mst up-t-date and cmplete infrmatin n games, clinics, events, schedules and results, please visit ur website at http://www.watnnabasketball.cm
THE OBA BOARD/PARENT MEETING The bard/parent meeting lays the fundatin fr all parties caches, players, and parents t explre and cmmunicate their expectatins and cncerns. This pprtunity is designed t discuss turnament selectin, playing time expectatins, caching philsphy, etc. We encurage all parents t attend this meeting. The meeting time and date will typically crrespnd with the evaluatin dates. COACHING REMINDERS: If yu want t reach yur players, yu have t understand why they play the game. A Yuth Sprts Institute survey f bys and girls ages 10 18 asked why they participate in nnschl sprts. Fllwing is the rank listing f the tp answers: 1. Have fun 6. Learn new skills 2. Stay in shape 7. Fr the excitement 3. Get exercise 8. Play as part f a team 4. Imprve my skills 9. Make new friends 5. D smething I am gd at 10. Fr the challenge f cmpetitin Yes, Win was ne f the chices. With bth bys and girls it came in 12 th place. Fr yur players t hear yur message, particularly at the yunger ages, it needs t include things like hw much fun they are ging t have, hw they are ging t imprve, and hw gd they are getting at any given skill.
PLAYER COMMITMENT: It is imprtant t clarify upfrnt cmmitment level is required frm players. OBA expects all players t attend all scheduled games and practices. Players shuld be at all scheduled practices at least 15 minutes prir t ging n the curt. Players shuld plan n arriving at least 30 minutes prir t the start f a game. T begin practice prmptly and end it at the scheduled time requires that players arrive early t have shes n and ready fr practice t begin at the stated time. Althugh they may have ther bligatins, players must remember the cmmitment they have made t OBA and t their team. Players shuld cme prperly dressed fr practice r game, equipped and prepared t participate. Players shuld bring a supply f water t each practice and game. Players shuld agree t fllw a cde f ethics. Player's Cde f Ethics 1. I will participate because I want t, nt because my parents r caches want me t. 2. I will play by the rules, and in the spirit f the game. 3. I will cntrl my temper - fighting and "muthing ff" are nt acceptable. 4. I will respect my teammates and ppnents. 5. I will d my best t be a team player. 6. I will remember that winning isn't everything - that having fun, imprving skills, making friends and ding my best are mst imprtant. 7. I will acknwledge all gd plays and perfrmances - thse f my team and f my ppnents. 8. I will remember that caches and fficials are there t help me. I will accept their decisins and shw them respect. 9. I will remember that when I play r practice the game f basketball, wherever I am, I represent OBA, my team, but mst f all, myself. 10. I will practice gd stewardship f the facilities and d my part t keep it clean.
Parent Cmmitment: Parents cntinual supprt and invlvement are necessary t OBA s success. They need t learn basic rules and terminlgy f the game and attend scheduled parent meetings. Parents can help by keeping their child s equipment, etc. clean and ready t use at each practice and game (r reminding the lder players t d s themselves). Parents shuld make sure their child arrives n time fr all games and practices, and t let the cach knw if their child will nt be able t attend a practice r game. Parents shuld pick up their players prmptly after practices. While the cach is bligated by OBA t stay with the player until a parent r guardian arrives, dn't turn yur cach int a babysitter. Parents shuld agree t bjectively discuss cncerns with thse wh can assist with cncerns verses thse wh can nt assist with their cncerns. Required parent participatin: Assisting at hme turnaments in cncessins, entry gate, etc Failure t wrk hme turnaments results in frfeiture f depsit. Parent vlunteer pprtunities are: Practice assistants (ask yur cach hw yu can help) Screkeeper at Turnaments Parent Representative Team crdinatr fr ut f twn events, making rm reservatins fr turnaments ut f twn r n hliday weekends. Cmmunicatins crdinatr, i.e. e-mail addresses, phne trees, handuts, birth certificates, etc. Treat scheduler Other ways parents can help the team: Praise yur child. If criticism is necessary, keep it psitive and instructive. Put the welfare f the player ahead f all else. Children generally accept disappintment better than their parents. Dn t put yur disappintment n the players. Encurage and applaud all members f the team, and be tlerant f mistakes. They will make many as they learn, but remember nt all players have achieved the same skill levels. Knw the requirements f the player s level f play. Travel teams require high-level ability and cmmitment fr the entire seasn and pst-seasn. The financial and time cmmitments fr travel team participatin are great. Yu and yur child shuld knw these requirements and be cmmitted t live up t them. Get t knw the caches. Discuss yur expectatins, prblems r the prgress f yur player with the cach at the prper time. The prper time is NEVER in the cmpany f ther players and parents. Supprt yur child s caches they need yur help. Appreciate the fact that the cach has the respnsibility fr an entire team. Activity and behavir f the players at all times is the sle respnsibility f the parents. Dn t be a chrnic cmplainer. If yu are cnvinced smething is wrng n yur child s team, discuss things as sn as pssible with the cach. If the issue cannt be reslved, the President f OBA is yur apprpriate pint f cntact. Parents privileges at any game, scrimmage, r practice are slely restricted t the enjyment f that event. Yur cnduct reflects n the team, OBA, and ur cmmunity.
Fair Play Cde fr Spectatrs: 1. I will remember that children play this sprt fr their enjyment. They are nt playing t entertain me. 2. I will nt have unrealistic expectatins. I will remember that child athletes are nt miniature prfessinals and cannt be judged by prfessinal standards. 3. I will never ridicule an athlete fr making a mistake during a cmpetitin. I will give psitive cmments that mtivate and encurage cntinued effrt. 4. I will respect the fficial s decisins and will encurage participants t d the same. 5. I will shw respect fr my team's ppnents, because withut them there wuld be n game. 6. I will cndemn the use f vilence in any frm and will express my disapprval in an apprpriate manner t caches and league fficials. 7. I will nt use bad language, nr will I harass athletes, caches, r fficials r ther spectatrs. 8. I will reprt any cnduct nt in alignment with abve guidelines t the OBA bard. Player Cnflicts: OBA caches are nt expected t tlerate disruptive r disrespectful behavir by players r parents. Prfanity, verbal abuse, r physical abuse will nt be tlerated. Discipline fr detrimental behavir cnducted during any OBA spnsred event, r events where OBA is a participant will nt be tlerated. It is the respnsibility f thse wh witness this behavir t reprt t an OBA bard member r the OBA President. NOTE: OBA reserves the right t dismiss participants r ban parents wh repeatedly vilate the stated gals, plicies, and prcedures f OBA. The OBA President and OBA Vice President are respnsible fr this decisin fllwing an effrt t gather the facts f said situatins.
