Oxley College K 6 Swimming Carnival Monday 20 February 2017 Welcome to our first inter-house sporting event for the year, our House Swimming Carnival. The weather forecast is good and the House spirit around K - 6 in the lead up to this event has been high. I congratulate our captains of Chisolm, Flynn and Walton who have been active in inspiring a sense of community celebration and House preparation. Sports competitions in K - 6 at Oxley are intentionally multi-purposed. Our aim is to encourage a spirit of participation in all our students that nurtures appropriate risk taking, determination and perseverance to build well-rounded children who may go on to discover a latent passion and talent in a particular activity. In addition to this we want to serve those students in our midst who have already discovered their passion for swimming and have dedicated significant practice and effort to pursue continual improvement and their personal best. For both groups the primary aim for the day is fun but it takes different forms. This year we have maintained the inclusion of all novelty events to ensure maximum participation. We have also endeavoured to enhance the opportunities for success at all levels by allocating swimmers into heats based on each child s achievement in our swimming programme in Term 4 of last year. Fun for our elite swimmers means stiff competition and the chance to pit themselves against students of similar ability. For these students we also wish to prepare them for further competition and representative events as best we can. We have been talking to the students about finding ways to think, to dare and to dream. Today is one such opportunity. They should plan ahead, they should strive to meet a personal challenge and they should dream of ending the day proud of themselves and their beloved House. I commend our swimmers to you, no matter their level of confidence and expertise. Finally, may I thank our invaluable parent helpers, the Sport and Maintenance Staff who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes and most of all the supporters who encourage all swimmers and celebrate the powerful community at the heart of our College. 2017 OXLEY K 6 SWIMMING CARNIVAL - RULES OF COMPETITION 1. Age the age the student has turned or will turn this year. 2. Official school swimming costumes must be worn whilst competing. The official costumes are the Oxley swimmers and the new blue FINA Approved swimmers available from the Oxley Shop. 3. Students must only compete in their age group. 4. Events have been pre-entered into the carnival programme. Competitors must compete in their designated races. No late entries will be accepted. 5. 50m freestyle races will be raced in heats. The fastest six competitors will then qualify for a final. If there are six or less competitors in 50m freestyle event, this will be raced as a final. All other strokes will be timed finals. Rankings will be calculated after all races have been completed. Championship points and representative selection will be determined from the results of the finals. 6. (a) Junior events consist of 8, 9 & 10 years (b) Senior events consist of 11, 12 & 13 years or 12 & 13 years when there is an 11 years event 7. The 100m Freestyle points count toward the Age Championship. 8. The Novelty & 25m events do not count toward age championships. One point will be awarded to each student per 25m event. A student who swims in a 50m event may not swim in the equivalent 25m event. 9. The decision of the judges is final. 10. If a student is away on the day that an event is programmed for any reason other than a school endorsed activity, the student cannot be timed at an earlier or later date. 11. A Girls and Boys Junior, 11 years, and Senior Age Champion and Runner-up Age Champion will be awarded. 12.
