How living things adapt to live in their environment Some living things change or adapt to help them live in their environment. Adaptation is when plants and animals change both their physical condition and behaviour so that they can live in their environment. There are 2 kinds of adaptation: 1. Temporary Adaptation this is when a plant or animal changes something for only a short time. Examples of this are: Humans wear different clothes depending on how hot or cold the weather is. Frogs hibernate when there is not enough food. Some lizards change their skin colour to camouflage in with their environment. 2. Permanent Adaptation - (Evolution) this is when a plant or animal changes its form, colour or something else which is inherited. Permanent Adaptation takes a long time and is permanent. Examples of this are: Animals Mouths: Some animals have mouths and teeth which have adapted to the type of food that they eat. These animals have each changed the shape of their mouths so they can hunt food. Test 2 2016 Science Worksheet 5

Grasshoppers have adapted their colour to be the same as the colour of the leaves that they live on. They do this to protect themselves from predators. This is called camouflage. Grasshoppers are the same colour as leaves. Cacti have adapted to the hot desert climate by developing a thick skin to help store water and spikes to protect them from being eaten. Cacti have spikes to stop animals eating them. Mammals have adapted their fur and thick skin to help keep their bodies warm. Some animals like lizards and starfish have adapted to attacks from predators by growing new body parts after they are attacked.

Name: Number: Class: Date: Adaptation 1. What is adaptation? 2. How many kinds of adaptation are there? 3. What is temporary adaptation? 4. Draw two examples of temporary adaptation. Colour your pictures! 5. What is permanent adaptation? 6. Write about ONE example of permanent adaptation. Draw and colour a picture.

Extinct or Endangered Extinction Extinction is when a species of animal or plant stops living on Earth. For example, Dinosaurs are extinct. Dinosaurs are now extinct. All dinosaurs have died. There are now no dinosaurs anywhere in the world. Endangered Endangered is when a species of animal or plant is almost extinct. There are still some living on Earth, but not many. For example, the Asian Elephant is endangered. Some causes of extinction are: 1. Natural Disasters like floods and fires. Floods and fire can cause extinction. 2. Hunting. People can cause animals to become extinct if they hunt too many of the one animal. People mainly kill for food.

3. Habitat Loss. Sometimes animals can lose their home because people want to build houses, make furniture from trees they cut down or build new cities. If an animal loses it s home, they find it hard to survive. 4. Trade. People kill or trade animals to make money. They sell different animals and parts of animals like the tusks of an elephant. They also kill animals to make handbags, clothes and jewellery. People kill crocodiles to make handbags, shoes and wallets. Extinct or Endangered 1. What does extinction mean? 2. What does endangered mean? 3. Write 4 causes of extinction: 1. 2. 3. 4.
