CINCINNATI REDS (19-21) vs. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (17-22) Saturday, May 17, 2014 Citizens Bank Park 7:05 p.m. EDT Game 40; Home 19 RHP Homer Bailey (3-2, 4.72) vs. LHP Cole Hamels (0-2, 5.32) LAST NIGHT S ACTION: The Phillies were shut out by the Cincinnati Reds, 3-0, at Citizens Bank Park... Starter Kyle Kendrick (L, 0-4) threw 7.0 strong innings but lost his 9 th straight decision... He allowed 3 runs on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 5... Kendrick surrendered a 2-out, 3-run homer to Devin Mesoraco in the 1 st inning, then retired the next 15 consecutive batters that he faced... The Phillies offense went 0-for-8 with RISP. ELIAS SAYS: Six road teams posted shutouts last night: the Rays in Anaheim, Tigers in Boston, Blue Jays in Arlington, Orioles in Kansas City, Dodgers in Phoenix and the Reds in Philadelphia... It marked only the second time in Major League history that six or more road teams posted shutouts on the same day... Seven road teams did so on June 4, 1972: Reds in Philadelphia, Astros in Montreal, Cardinals in Los Angeles, Red Sox in Kansas City, A's in Baltimore (twice in DH) and Rangers in Milwaukee. ZERO DARK TWENTY: Philadelphia s offense has failed to score a run over their last 20 innings (last run scored: 7 th inning, 5/13 vs LAA), which is their second-longest drought of the season (21 innings, 5/4-6)... The Phillies also had two offensive scoreless streaks of 20 or more innings in 2013 (20 inn from 5/3-5; 21 inn from 8/16-18) after having none in their previous two seasons (2011-12)... The Phillies 21 inning scoreless streak earlier this year was their longest since a 30-inning drought from May 25-28, 2010. BENCH MARK: Phillies pinch hitters are currently mired in an 0-for-18 slump... Their last pinch-hit came on April 26 at ARI, an 8 th inning double by Cody Asche... Overall, Philadelphia is batting just.125 (6-48) in pinch situations this season, which ranks 14 th among all NL clubs and T-26 th in MLB... Tony Gwynn Jr. and John Mayberry Jr. have two pinch-hits this season, Cody Asche has one, and former Phillie Jayson Nix had one... On the bright side, four of the Phillies six pinch-hits this season have gone for extra bases (3 2B, HR). HOME SICK: Philadelphia is averaging just 1.91 runs per game (21 R) over their last 11 contests at Citizens Bank Park (3-8 record since April 16)... During that period, the Phillies have been held to one run or fewer at home seven times and been shut out four times... Overall, the Phillies are averaging 2.89 runs per game at home this season, last among all ML clubs... They also rank 25 th in the majors in home OBP (.298), 26 th in slugging % (.357), T-27 th in extra-base hits (45), 28 th in batting average (.231) and home runs (11), and last in runs scored (52)... The Phillies, however, have played only 18 games at home so far this season, tied for the 2 nd -fewest in the majors (STL 16 G). RISP-Y BUISINESS: The Phillies are 0 for their last 16 with runners in scoring position (last hit with RISP: 4 th inn, 5/13 vs LAA)... In their last 14 games, they are batting.193 (22-114) with RISP, which ranks last in the NL and 29 th in MLB... The Phillies had the 4 th -best average in the majors with RISP (.265) over their first 25 games, trailing only the Orioles (.310), Rockies (.299) and White Sox (.295). A SIGHT FOR SORE EYES: Through August 3 rd, the Phillies next 73 games will be strictly against National League clubs... Philadelphia has played only 30 games against their own league this season, which are the fewest among all NL clubs... In those 30 games, the Phillies have the 6 th -best winning percentage (.533, 16-14) among all NL clubs against the senior circuit, trailing only the Brewers (.611), Giants (.600), Nationals (.576), Rockies (.559) and Braves (.550)... The Phillies went 4-1 over their previous five series against NL opponents (9-5 overall), which included a one-game rainshortened series loss to the Mets. PHILS vs. REDS: Since the beginning of the 2008 season, the Phillies are 17-7 (.708) against the Reds at Citizens Bank Park... In those 24 games, Philadelphia has outscored Cincinnati, 123-82, and posted 16 quality starts with a 3.04 team ERA... The first Phillies-Reds game took place on May 16, 1890 in Philadelphia (a 5-1 Reds win), making this the 125 th season of competition between the two clubs (941-1116-10 all-time record vs. CIN in 2,067 games). KING JAMES: Shortstop Jimmy Rollins is just 24 hits shy of setting the Phillies all-time franchise hits record Currently, he is tied for 3 rd with Ed Delahanty on the list with 2,211 hits, trailing only Mike Schmidt (2,234) and Richie Ashburn (2,217) Rollins is already the Phillies all-time leader in doubles (462) and ranks in the Top 10 of nearly every offensive category in franchise history including games (2 nd ), at-bats (2 nd ), extra-base hits (2 nd ), total bases (2 nd ), stolen bases (2 nd ), runs (3 rd ), triples (3 rd ), walks (6 th ), RBI (8 th ) and home runs (10 th ).
