(Gallagher-Iba Arena) Abilene Christian at Oklahoma State, 7:00 p.m. CT C ONFERENCE E N E NEWS & NOTES This year marks the eighth-consecutive in which at least 70 percent of Big 12 teams will participate in postseason play. The Big 12 s six NCAA Championship bids mark the 10th time out of 11 years for at least six squads to make the field. The Big 12 is the only league with 60 percent of its teams chosen in 2017. Including this year s selections, the Big 12 has 128 appearances in the NCAA Championship and 41 in the WNIT for a total of 169 postseason bids since inception in 1996-97. Baylor won its seventh-consecutive and eighth overall Big 12 regular season title while West Virginia captured its first Phillips 66 Big 12 Women s Basketball Championship to earn the Conference s automatic NCAA bid. The Big 12 ended regular season non-conference play at 90-24 (.789) and has won 29 of its last 32 non-conference games. The Big 12 s non-conference winning percentage is third among all leagues. Half of the Big 12 s 24 non-conference losses were to ranked teams with eight of those teams rated in the top 10. The Big 12 has played 27 games against teams from the other autonomy conferences, in addition to three games against current No. 1-ranked UConn.. The Big 12 Champions for Life initiative showcases the success stories of student-athletes and how an athletic scholarship has positively impacted their lives. This week features two impressive student-athletes, Oklahoma s Elena Sloan (Rowing) and West Virginia alum Beth Deal (Gymnastics). Sloan always knew she had what it takes to succeed on the path of education, but it wasn t until she received her athletic scholarship that she began to realize she would also be successful athletically and be a valuable contribution to her team. Deal was so happy to be part of the WVU gymnastics program that she never expected to also receive a scholarship on top of that. Despite her shock, Deal is taking full advantage by pursuing a master s degree. The conference postseason title was the Mountaineers second all-time (1989). West Virginia is the eighth different team to win a Phillips 66 Big 12 Women s Basketball Championship crown. Baylor leads the pack with eight postseason titles, all since 2005. WVU is the second No. 6 seed to advance through the bracket to win the Big 12 Championship, joining Oklahoma in 2004 when the conference had 12 teams. Both No. 6 seed titles were over the No. 1 seed. The 2017 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women s Basketball Championship was played in Oklahoma City s Chesapeake Energy Arena for the third time in four years, and was contested in Oklahoma City for the fourth time. The 2007 and 2009 postseason events were played in Cox Convention Center. The Championship will return to Oklahoma City in 2018 and 2019. Baylor entered the Championship as the No. 1 seed after winning its seventhconsecutive and eighth overall Big 12 regular season title. Nine different teams have entered the Championship as the No. 1 seed. Baylor leads the pack with eight appearances followed by Oklahoma with four as the top seed. Oklahoma is second with six while Texas has five. The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds have faced each other in the finals seven times ( 16, 14, 13, 11, 06, 02, 99). The top seed has won all seven of those matchups. The top seed has a 59-10 (85.5%) cumulative record in the Championship. Of the 219 Big 12 Championship games, 168 (76.7%) have been won by the higher-seeded team. 2014 and 2011 are the only years in which the higher-seeded team won all games in the Championship. Four of the previous winners of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women s Basketball Championship have advanced to that season s Women s Final Four (Oklahoma in 2002, Texas in 2003, Baylor in 2005 and 2012). Oklahoma and Iowa State have won the men s and women s Phillips 66 Big 12 Basketball Championships in the same year. OU won both 2002 tournaments while Iowa State took both titles in 2000. Baylor s 3-point win (74-71) over West Virginia in 2014 tied for the closest title game in Big 12 Championship history. The 2011 and 2001 events were also decided by a trey.
