BAKEWELL MARKET Monday 10 th September A reduction in temperatures but still no worthwhile rain in the Peak District and forage and fodder supplies still giving concern. Decent entries of stock with 846 Cattle and 2,304 Sheep on offer. The Store and Breeding Cattle section was very busy with a total of 497 head on offer. Trade very brisk particularly for the stronger and better quality cattle with top figures - Steers 1,290, Hfrs 1,250 and Bulls 1,310 and Cow & Calf outfits to 1,260. A good show of 130 Finished Cattle saw trade somewhat steadier with the best on offer to 228p and 1,509. The 46 Heifers averaged 192.9p which gives an indication of price levels. Turning to the OTM section there were 114 animals on offer. Top figures 176p and 1,200. The overall average at 114.6p reflected the quality of cattle forward rather than the level of trade which by all accounts was good from start to finish. 105 Calves this week with Bulls to 320 and Heifers 280. In the Sheep section 1,699 were on offer, a few less than last week probably as the result of 6 day rule standstill amongst producers who had purchased Breeding Sheep in the last few days. The best Lambs on offer sold to 210p and 100.44 per head with SQQ and overall averages virtually identical at 168 pence. It remains to be seen how these compare as the week progresses. Finally, the 590 Cull Sheep Ewes sold to 127 to average 59.13 Forthcoming Events Thursday 13 th September: Regular Lunchtime Sheep Market Plus MV Accredited Rams at 1.30pm Friday 14 th September: Store Lamb Sale

114 OTM, BARREN & FEEDING COWS overall average 114.6p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles) Another very good show of 114 Cows today but an entry that generally lacked quality with only 13 Continentals today. Trade peaked at 176 pence ( 1,172) for a Blond Cow from CH Ede & Son, Somersall. Best fed Continentals 158p plus with keeping Cows 120-150p. Angus sold to 143p, Herefords to 145p and South Devons to 149p. 80 Black & White and ex dairy cows - ave 110.1p Very similar trade to last week but generally less quality, Big Heifers sold to 145p ( 1,194) and 144p ( 1,172) for Roger Ardern with best shaped Friesians to 143p ( 1,066) for Geoff Limer. Better sorts generally 138p plus, Holsteins generally 115-130p, Leaner Cows 100-110p with plain Cows (plenty today) under 1. 175p/kg 666kg Blond x CH Ede & Son, Somersall 162p/kg 475kg B Blue x F Taylor, Teversal 161p/kg 606kg Sim D Hudson, Cheshire 159p/kg 684kg B Blue x M Wright, Hartington 158p/kg 636kg B Blue x DS Gregory, Glossop 149p/kg 706kg Devon MG Mosley & Sons, Rivelin 145p/kg 710kg Hfd DS Gregory, Glossop 145p/kg 824kg Holst RW Ardern & Sons, Topley Pike 144p/kg 814kg Holst RW Ardern & Sons, Topley Pike 143p/kg 670kg AA Mosley & Kirkwood, Matlock 143p/kg 746kg Fries G & M Limer, Taddington Gross Prices: 1200.96 864kg AA Mosley & Kirkwood, Matlock 1194.80 824kg Holst RW Ardern & Sons, Topley Pike 1172.16 814kg Holst RW Ardern & Sons, Topley Pike 1172.16 866kg Blond x CH Ede & Son, Somersall 1087.56 684kg B Blue x M Wright, Hartington 1066.78 746kg Fries G & M Limer, Taddington 1060.80 816kg Holst RJ & J Matkin, Hopton 1055.92 788kg AA JW & J Pearson, Brackenfield 1051.94 706kg Devon MG Molsley & Sons, Rivelin 1036.64 836kg Holst AJ & ME Minshall Ltd, Tean 1 OTM Bull 115p/kg 1200 Holst A & DJ Gregory, Litton 130 FINISHED CATTLE overall average 183.5p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles) Another good entry split evenly with 41 Bulls, 43 Steers and 46 Heifers with all shapes and sizes and grades represented with plenty of weight about today.

497 STORE & BREEDING CATTLE - (Auctioneer Alastair Sneddon) A useful total of 497 Store & Breeding Cattle had attracted a full line up of buyers, several from a considerable distance. As a result, a strong trade prevailed from start to finish. In greatest demand were older Cattle in forward condition with plenty in the 1000+ bracket. There was also plenty of competition for top quality younger animals. With Cattle that were looking plainer as a result of the dry season buyers were clearly giving consideration to the cost of finishing, but these types were well bid for at appropriate prices. All in all a good solid sale. 31 Feeding Bulls Sample Results: 640 Lim x 13 mnths RJ & JW Wigley, Middleton 600 AA x 14 mnths GH Gregory, Sheldon 1310 Lim x 22 mnths SJ Hinchley, Ashover 1140 Char x 16 mnths SJ Hinchley, Ashover 1060 Char x 16 mnths D Smith, High Green 810 AA x 11 mnths Tegsnose Livestock, Langley 420 Hfd x 4-5 mnths AC Lowe, Holmesfield 340 Holst 9-15 mnths J&C&A Hitch, Stainsby 19 Breeding Cattle If anything the Cows and Calves were dearer than they have been with typical prices as follows: 1010 Hfd x Cow 63 mnths & Hfr Calf Ridgewood Farms, Alderwasley 1040 Sim x Cow 137 mnths & Bull Calf Ridgewood Farms, Alderwasley 900 AA x Cow 41 mnths & Bull Calf R & H Hinchliffe, Whaley Bridge 1260 Lim x Cow 29 mnths & Bull Calf H & S Shann, Sheen 1020 B Blue x Cow 27 mnths & Hfr Calf D Greatorex Matlock 1260 Ped Sim Stock Bull, 16 mnths D Wainwright, Macclesfield 260 Steers, Overall Average 821 A strong sample as the average indicates.
