Your Ice Show how-to guide! Getting started The 2018 Silver Blades Ice Show is fast approaching, so we have created this handy guide to get you ready. It has all of the information you ll need to help your skater have a fun and positive experience. Our 2018 Ice Show theme is Fantasy on Ice. With a run time of roughly two hours, the show will be structured in two acts, with a 15-minute intermission in between. Each act will be made up of short group performances and a several duo and small group skates by our Senior Skaters. Practices You should have received an email from us in February letting you know which group number(s) your child has been assigned to, as well as the dates and times of their practices. This information is available on our website at https://www.silverblades.ca/pages/events/ice-show/. Skaters have been grouped based on their skating skills, and while we made every effort to schedule their practices on the day they skated during the season, it was not always possible. Each group will have at least three practices, and it s important that they attend all of them. If an absence or lateness is unavoidable, you must inform the group coach as soon as possible. Attendance will be monitored, and the group coach and Ice Show Director will decide whether skaters who miss practices may still be in the performances. Please make sure your child arrives at the rink a little early for each practice so that they are on the ice promptly at the scheduled start time. Communication Changes to the schedule and other important information about the Ice Show will be communicated through postings on our Club Bulletin Board at the rink (outside Dressing Room 1) and on the website (silverblades.ca). We will also send email updates, so make sure that we have your current email address on file. It s as easy as sending us a quick email at info@silverblades.ca, or you can leave a voicemail message at 416-233-8331.

Skate preparation Your child s skates should be sharpened approximately two weeks prior to the first Ice Show performance, and we recommend the following skate sharpening services: Jake s Skate Sharpening (Thornhill) 905-889-3279 Figure Skating Boutique (Yonge & Finch) 416-225-1377 Esta (Dundas & Hwy 427) 905-282-1362 HOCKEY SKATES Newson s (Dundas & Jane) 416-762-9976 Costumes Costumes have been rented for the Ice Show. They will be cleaned and fitted to the measurements of each skater, and then labelled with the skater s name so that volunteers can ensure everyone has the right costume. Please ensure your child wears clothes that are easy to change into and out of to the dress rehearsal and all performances. The dressing room area will be very congested so please do not send additional or unnecessary items (e.g., backpacks, bulky coats) with your skater. Absolutely no food or drink will be allowed in the dressing rooms. And costumes will not be allowed to leave the arena under any circumstances. All skaters will require the following: Plastic or rubber skate guards (no cloth blade covers, as these pose a slipping/falling hazard) GIRLS beige skating tights in good condition (footed or footless; no over-the-boot tights or boot covers, please) BOYS black skating or dress pants If you do not have these items, please purchase them for the show. You can find them at: Figure Skating Boutique ESTA Footloose Dancewear (tights only) PreCanSkate and CanSkate participants will also need: Helmets for practices, the dress rehearsal and all performances. If your child s helmet has a face guard attached, please remove it for the rehearsal and shows. Thin, stretchy gloves beige for girls, black for boys Some costumes may be sleeveless if your child would be more comfortable wearing a warm layer underneath, please ensure that it is white or beige (colours or patterns will distract from the costume) NOTE: Please ensure that all of your child s personal items (including skate guards and gloves) are labelled. 3

Dress Rehearsal Thursday, April 12 Attendance is mandatory for all Ice Show participants CanSkate/Preliminary skaters who are skating in Act II (CanSkate groups 5, 6 & 7 and Preliminary group A & C except Beginner Synchro skaters) should arrive promptly at 5:30pm All other skaters should arrive between 4:15pm and 4:30pm Dress rehearsal starts at 5:00pm Full costumes will be worn PreCanSkate/CanSkate/Preliminary may leave once their number is over and they have changed out of their costumes (parents, please stay in the arena) We will announce when each group is ready to be signed out Junior, Intermediate & Senior level skaters must remain until the end of the dress rehearsal in order to rehearse the finale Parents/guardians of children under the age of 12 must remain in the arena for the duration of the dress rehearsal Performances Friday April 13, 7 pm; Saturday April 14, 1 pm; and Saturday April 14, 7 pm. All skaters are expected to attend all three shows. Each skater is important to the number they are participating in, and absences affect the performance of the entire group. Please observe parking restrictions in the arena parking lot and on neighbouring streets, or you will risk fines and/or towing. Additional parking is available Friday evening and all day Saturday at Etobicoke Collegiate Institute (immediately north of the arena, past the railroad tracks). All skaters must be signed in and signed out by a parent/guardian. Please be prepared to wait patiently as there will be a lot of skaters arriving at the same time. Our volunteers will move as quickly as possible to get everyone in and out promptly. Once a skater is signed in, a volunteer will escort them to join their group in one of the dressing rooms, where there will be another set of volunteers to help them get ready (costumes, make-up, skates, etc.) 5

NOTE: Parents are not permitted in the dressing rooms we simply don t have the space to accommodate this. But rest assured, your children will be safe and well cared for by our parent volunteers. And if you would like to stay with them, you can always sign up to be a volunteer (see next section below). Volunteering Our shows would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of our many volunteers. If you d like to help out, email us at volunteer@silverblades.ca or visit the website at https://www.silverblades.ca/volunteering/search/, where you can sign up for a volunteer role online. For Dressing Room Attendant positions in Canskate and Preliminary, you can can select the specific group that your child is in as long as there are still spots available for that group. Patience is a virtue Please remember that every single person working at the Ice Show is a volunteer from our skating community, and they are doing their best to ensure that things run smoothly and efficiently. We ask that you remember and respect that, and your cooperation with all of their efforts is much appreciated.
