Royals vs. Rays Kansas City pulled off its first 4-game sweep of the Rays when these clubs met in Kauffman Stadium in early July...the 4-0 start to this year has cut the Royals all-time deficit to Tampa Bay to 66-70, which includes a 28-43 deficit here in The Trop... KC was 2-1 here last year and has won six of the last nine contested under this roof. Date Site Score WP LP Att. 7/7 KC (1) W, 9-5 Holland Boxberger 22,386 KC (2) W, 7-1 Finnegan Gomes 28,119 7/8 KC W, 9-7 Guthrie Archer 28,204 7/9 KC W, 8-3 Ventura Karns 32,308 8/28 @ TB 8/29 @ TB 8/30 @ TB WORTH THE WAIT--The Royals and O s had to wait out a 95-minute rain delay at the outset yesterday, but it didn t phase Kansas City or starting pitcher Yordano Ventura, who led the way in a 5-3 victory...the win gave the Royals their eighth consecutive home series win by taking three of four from Baltimore... Ventura extended his personal winning streak to five straight spanning his last seven starts, establishing a single-game career best with 11 strikeouts during his 6.0-inning stint...he gave up just two hits, while walking four and leaving with KC in charge by a 4-0 count...the redhot Mike Moustakas and heating up Alex Rios each contributed three hits to Kansas City s 12-hit afternoon as the Royals collected at least one hit in every inning...the win was KC s 15th in the last 20 games and returned the Royals to a season-best 29 games over.500...coupled with the Twins loss here last night and Kansas City has returned to a 13-game lead in the Central, while the battle for home field in the postseason expanded to a 7-game lead over the Blue Jays. HE S BAAAAAAACK!!!--Yordano Ventura appears to have overcome some early season doldrums on the hill, as he won his fifth consecutive decision yesterday, spanning his last seven starts, while establishing a career best in strikeouts...the 24-year old fired 6.0 shutout innings over the Orioles, allowing only two hits, while walking four and fanning 11, eclipsing his previous career high of 10 set a season ago in San Diego... Ace has been most impressive over his last four starts, each quality in nature, going 3-0 with a 1.08 ERA, allowing only three earned runs in 25.0 innings, while fanning 32 and holding opposing hitters to a.167 average (15-for-90). A ZO MECOMING FOR BEN--Ben Zobrist spent the first nine seasons of his big league career wearing the uniform of the Tampa Bay Rays and tonight he dresses in the visiting clubhouse for the first time...acquired by the Royals on July 28 from the Athletics, Zobrist was on the disabled list with a left knee injury when Oakland visited St. Pete in late-may...the versatile switch-hitter had a pair of hits yesterday as the DH vs. Baltimore and is now batting.330 (31-for-94) in 26 games as a Royal... he has been most impressive when playing in Kauffman Stadium, hitting.429 (18-for-42) in 13 games in his new home, while reaching base at a.571 clip with 14 walks to go with his 18 hits. SNOWMEN IN THE SUMMER--Both Mike Moustakas and Alex Rios enter this visit to The Trop riding individual 8-game hitting streaks in which each are pushing the.500 mark during the skeins...each had three hits in yesterday s with over the Orioles, with Moose now hitting.452 (14-for-31) in his 8-gamer and Rios hammering the ball at a.483 clip (14-for-29) in his streak...moustakas has four doubles and four home runs among his 14 hits during the streak, while driving in 12 runs, including 11 RBI in his last five games...rios has three doubles and a triple during his streak while raising his season average 25 points to.257. AUGUST WINDING DOWN--Kansas City is now 17-8 this month which when completed will be the club s fifth consecutive winning month, a first for the franchise since the 1982 squad posted five straight to start the year before a 13-17 September/October...dating back to last year, the Royals have enjoyed a franchise first seven straight regular season winning months, posting a combined 112-70 ledger since the start of August, 2014, which is second only in that span to St. Louis at 114-67. PEN BACK ON TOP--The bullpen was charged with all three runs that KC allowed yesterday, but still over the last 10 contests the pen has a 1.69 ERA, allowing seven earned runs in its last 37.1 innings...kansas City s bullpen remains on top in the American League in ERA with a 2.34 mark and just trails the Cardinals (2.32) for the big league lead...the Royals have also combined for a 26-8 record by their relief corps, easily the best winning percentage in baseball, at.765, while KC s 45 saves are thirdmost in the Majors, behind only the Cards (53) and Tampa Bay (49). TONIGHT S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Edinson Volquez (11-7, 3.40) vs. Erasmo Ramirez (10-4, 3.66) 2015 2014 Career 2015 2014 Career Edinson Volquez vs. Rays 0-0 1-0 2-0 Major League Record 11-7 (3.40 ERA) 13-7 77-66 Erasmo Ramirez vs. Royals - - 0-0 Major League Record 10-4 (3.66 ERA) 1-6 17-16 EDINSON VOLQUEZ is making his team-leading 27th start of the season, his 212th career starting assignment and 217th overall appearance...he faces the Rays for the second time this year and fifth time in his career...volky signed a two-year free-agent contract with the Royals on December 29, 2014. AVOIDING DEFEAT IN BOSTON--Edinson allowed a season-high six earned runs in 6.2 innings last Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park, but escaped defeat when the Royals rallied for four in the ninth and an 8-6 victory...he also gave up a season high nine hits, but did not walk a man, marking the second time this year he s worked at least 6.0 frames with no freebies...through the first 5.0 innings, Volquez allowed just two-out RBI hits by Jackie Bradley, Jr. and Josh Rutledge in the second...he held a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, however, Boston struck for two runs in the sixth and added pair on Volky s tab in the seventh, taking a 6-4 lead...teammates Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas provided two-run hits in the ninth, taking Edinson off the hook for a decision. KEEP ROLLIN --Despite a couple of rough outings, Volquez continues to be the Royals most consistent starting pitcher, entering tonight as the team leader in wins (11), innings pitched (158.2), strikeouts (119) and quality starts (14)...he recorded seven victories between June 10 and August 7, which were tied for the most in the Majors in that span...he s been one of the best in baseball over the last 14 months as since June 20, 2014, Volky has the fifth-best winning percentage (.714) in the Majors, going 20-8 with a 2.76 ERA, which ranks 13th, and a.237 opponents average. SWEET ESCAPE--Edinson has been at his best this season in pressure situations, holding the opposition to a.188 average (26-for-138) with runners in scoring position, ranking him third among qualifying A.L. hurlers...he s given up just five extra-base hits (all doubles) in those situations for the lowest opponents slugging percentage (.225) with RISP in the Majors. VS. RAYS---Volky faces Tampa Bay for the second time this season, taking a no-decision in the second game of a split doubleheader on July 7, a 7-1 KC win...in that outing, he allowed just one run on five hits, but was removed after throwing 101 pitches over the first 5.0 frames...he s 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA (7 ER in 25.1 IP) all-time against the Rays, earning an 8-1 victory here on June 23 of last season with Pittsburgh. ON THE ROAD--Edinson makes his third-straight start on the road and 14th of the season...he s gone 4-4 with a 3.87 ERA (34 ER in 79.0 IP) through his first 13 outings away from The K...Volky is 36-32 with a 4.61 ERA in 104 career road starts (106 outings). East this year, including a 5-3 mark during this 11-game stretch that started in Boston (2-2) and then home vs. Baltimore (3-1)...after Sunday, KC will have three games remaining against the East on September 11-13 in Baltimore...Kansas City has a combined 63-36 record against the other divisions and other league...the Royals have a 13-6 mark vs. the National League this year with one to go on September 28 in Chicago when KC and the Cubs will make-up a May 30 rainout in Wrigley Field... dating back to the start of 2014, KC has the best Interleague record in the Majors at 28-11...Kansas City has a 32-19 record within the Central, the best intradivision mark in the A.L...the Royals are 18-11 vs. the West, with just a 3-game series against Seattle left on the slate. GORDO CONTINUES REHAB ASSIGNMENT--Rawlings Gold Glove leftfielder Alex Gordon, out since July 9 with a left groin strain, continued his minor league injury rehabilitation assignment last night going 3-for-5 with a double and RBI as the designated hitter in Omaha s 5-1 win at home over Fresno...he has gone 8-for-20 (.400) in five rehab games with three runs scored, four driven in, a double and homer, compiling a.478 on-base pct. and 1.078 OPS. HOME STREAK ROLLS ON--Yesterday s win over the Orioles gave KC three wins in four games and extended the club s home series winning streak to eight dating back to a 4-game sweep of the Rays back in early July...Kansas City has gone 13-3 in its last 16 affairs in The K...dating back to July 5, Kansas City possesses a big league best 22-6 ledger in its last 28 home games and has an overall home mark of 45-21, the second most home wins in the A.L...the Royals have already eclipsed their home win total from a year ago (42-39) with 15 regular season games remaining at home. KC S WINNINGEST SKIPPER--Manager Ned Yost, who became the winningest skipper in franchise history earlier this year, is back to.500 as KC s manager at 451-451 with yesterday s win...after taking the job on May 13, 2010, his first 2 1/2 seasons saw the Royals play 55 games under.500 at 198-253...since the start of 2013, Ned s troops have gone 253-198 for a.561 winning pct., which is the best record in the American League (Baltimore next at 244-207), and fourth-most wins in the Majors trailing only St. Louis (269), the Pirates (259) and Dodgers (256) in that span...he passed Royals Hall of Famer Whitey Herzog as the winningest skipper in team annals when he captured win #411 on June 18 vs. the Brewers...Ned s 908 career wins, which include 457 with Milwaukee, rank 68th all-time and sixth among active managers. WINNING THE CLOSE ONES--Not surprisingly with the total number of victories this year and the lockdown bullpen, the Royals also lead the Majors with the best winning percentage in one-run games, with Tuesday night s 3-2 triumph upping Kansas City to 21-11 for a.656 pct...both the Pirates (28-15) and Cubs (28-17) have won more single tally decisions this year, but their winning pct. in those affairs are.651 and.622, respectively...last year s eventual A.L. Championship club actually scuffled in one-run contests with a 22-25 record. A VIEW FROM ABOVE--Kansas City enters tonight with a 13-game advantage in the A.L. Central, which is the largest of any division in the Majors...in fact, the Royals 7-game lead for best record in the American League is bigger than any other Major League club s divisional advantage...kc s lead peaked at 14 1/2 after play on August 19, the largest KC has experienced since 1980, when that eventual A.L. championship squad saw its lead expand to as many as 20 games as late as August 31, 1980...today marks the 109th day the Royals have been in first place this year...kc is 29 games over.500 for the second time this year, marking the first time since the end of the 1980 season (97-65)...KC s longest winning streak this year was a 7-0 start to the season, while the longest drought has been four games twice. THE K IS THE PLACE TO BE--The Royals eclipsed the 30,000 mark for the 49th time this year with yesterday s crowd of 31,155, posting a 31-18 ledger in those well attended affairs, while going 13-5 in the 18 home sellouts this year...kansas City blew past the 2,000,000 mark in 2015 season attendance in the 60th home date on August 14, marking the fastest that KC has eclipsed that milestone, three dates earlier than the 1989 campaign...this is the 13th time in franchise history that Kansas City has drawn at least two million, but the first time in 24 years (1991)...Kansas City s current per game average of 33,415 per game is an improvement of 10,035 per contest compared to 66 dates last year...when a bow is wrapped around the 2015 regular season, the Royals should shatter the team record of 2,477,700 set in 89. SERIES WORK--With the series win over the Orioles, Kansas City is now 5-0 with a split in its last six series...over a longer period, the club is 11-3-1 in its last 15 sets...on the year, the Royals are 26-11 with five splits in the 42 series played...the Royals entered play on June 7 trailing by a game in the A.L. Central, but was a 4-3 winner at home over the Rangers that day which propelled Kansas City to a big league best 48-26 record since and a 14-game turnaround in the standings...included in that stretch is a 27-10 record in Kauffman Stadium. vs. Rays (2015) vs. Rays (career) On Road (career) Ramirez (career) Odorizzi (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Butera.000 3 0 0 0 Cain.571 7 4 2 5 Dyson.444 9 4 1 2 Escobar.500 18 9 0 3 Hosmer.222 18 4 0 2 Infante.250 16 4 0 1 Morales.400 15 6 0 5 Moustakas Orlando.250 8 2 1 4 Perez.250 12 3 1 3 Rios.333 12 4 0 0 Zobrist.194 31 6 1 3.328 61 20 2 8.250 48 12 1 3.355 110 39 1 10.284 116 33 3 16.273 183 50 3 18.281 121 34 5 16.214 84 18 2 13.250 8 2 1 4.304 92 28 4 20.253 513 130 14 63.196 377 74 7 37.279 875 244 12 89.246 492 121 0 23.263 1793 472 13 153.285 1370 390 38 180.277 2641 732 52 281.267 1530 409 59 225.242 1189 288 37 123.197 76 15 2 5.274 1021 280 36 132.268 3266 876 71 371.276 2192 604 67 303.500 2 1 0 0.000 3 0 0 0 1.000 1 1 0 0.000 3 0 0 0.000 3 0 0 0.667 3 2 1 1.375 8 3 0 0.444 9 4 2 3.286 7 2 0 0.333 6 2 0 0.571 7 4 1 1.333 3 1 0 1.000 5 0 0 0.333 6 2 0 0.167 6 1 0 0 Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
