Rifle ReCap (2013-14) 2013-14: The Air Force rifle team concluded the collegiate season with the 2014 NCAA Rifle Championships in March. Following the conclusion of the season several cadets went on to compete in USA Shooting/ International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) senior and junior World Cup championship matches. The following is a recap of 2013-14 and an update on how those cadet-marksmen accomplished post-season triumphs. In October 2013, the rifle team kicked off the fall season with two conference wins against UTEP on Oct. 19-20. Air Force won the first match 4652-4536 and then went on to win 4656-4543 the next day. Team members Meredith Carpentier, Kevyn Stinett, David Higgins, Tyler Rico and Ryan Jacobs all added the top Air Force scores and overall match scores to the team s wins on both days in the smallbore and air rifle. On Nov. 2, Air Force competed in the annual President s Cup against sister academies, Army, Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. Air Force took second place in the match with an aggregate score of 4649. The smallbore team scored 2303 points in the match, and the air rifle squad finished with 2346 points. Army won the trophy with a total score of 4654. Navy finished third with 4609 points. The Coast Guard finished fourth with 4435 points. On Nov. 16-17, the rifle team competed against UTEP and Jacksonville State in Fort Worth, Texas. Air Force beat UTEP, 4655-4509, and the next day lost 4644-4642 to JSU. In January, Air Force started 2014 with a 4-1 record and hosted No. 1 Alaska at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs on Jan. 9. The Falcons suffered its first loss of 2014, 4680-4624. Later in the month, the team traveled to Lincoln, Neb., for two matches against the Cornhuskers, Jan. 25-26. Air Force lost both matches, 4685-4629 and 4679-4671, respectively. The Falcons set two school records on the 26th (smallbore 2332 and an aggregate 4671). In February, Air Force returned to its home range at the Air Force Academy. In the inaugural home match, Air Force won 4651-4562 against Nevada on Feb. 1. In the match, Carpentier scored the overall high scores in the smallbore (581) and air rifle (594), where in air rifle she shot three 100s in her last relays. Higgins had a high 578 in smallbore, while Rico had a high 586 in air rifle. On Feb. 7, Air Force traveled to Akron, Ohio, to compete against the University of Akron. The Falcons won the match 4638-4616. The next day, Air Force competed in the first-ever Patriot Rifle Conference Championships. Air Force finished with a 2303 in the smallbore championship. On the following day, Air Force finished with a 2346 in the air rifle championships. The team took second place with an overall score of 4649. Ohio State was the host school for the championships matches. Looking toward the 2014 NCAA Rifle Championships, Air Force traveled to Fort Worth, Texas, to compete against TCU in the NCAA Qualifier (Feb. 22). The Falcons lost the qualifier 4660-4650. With the collegiate season concluded, the Falcons finished 10-6 and second in the conference with a 6-3 record. On Feb. 27, the NCAA rifle committee announced the teams and individual qualifiers for the 2014 NCAA Men s and Women s Rifle Championships for March 14-15. On the list of individual air rifle qualifiers was Carpentier. Carpentier qualified for the NCAAs with a 594 air rifle score she shot against TCU in the qualifier match earlier in February. Carpentier was the Falcons only NCAA qualifier. On March 14, at the NCAAs, Carpentier finished 13th in air rifle with 588 points. She received NRA All-America honors for her performance during 2013-14, and earned air rifle first-team and smallbore second-team honors. She also received second-team recognition for a combined aggregate from the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA). USA Shooting competitions: In December 2013, Carpentier, sophomores Stinett, Higgins and Rico, and freshmen Jacobs and Mary Simonton competed in the USA Shooting Winter Air Gun Championships in Colorado Springs. Carpentier earned five medals during the three-day competition. She was the gold medalist in the 10m Air Rifle women s and junior s championships, earning the gold twice in the juniors. On day two, she placed third in the women s championship and on day three she placed third in juniors. In the women s championships, she finished with the highest collegiate total for all three days with a 1239.0. Stinett also earned bronze and silver medals in the women s junior championships, placing third with a 184.5 in finals the first day and a 204.6 on day three. Her final aggregate score was 1228.7. With that same point total, she finished 27th among the 60 competitors in the junior s championships. In the men s championships, Jacobs finished 14th overall with a total score of 1834. Rico finished 16th with 1830 points. Craig O Daniel also competed and finished with 1812 points. Higgins finished 40th with a total of 1810 points. In juniors, Jacobs scored 2014-15 Air Force Rifle Media Guide 4

Rifle ReCap (2013-14) a 140.9 in the final third round for a three-day total of 1834.0 points while Rico had a 119.6 and finished with 1830.2 points, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. O Daniel had a three-day total of 1812.8. Higgins scored a 160.1 in day-1 finals to finish in fourth place, but ended the competition with an 1810.6, good enough for 14th place overall. Carpentier and Higgins scores at the Winter Air Guns helped to qualify them for the USA Shooting Team and to go on to compete in the 2014 World Cup in Fort Benning, Ga., in March. Competing at the 2014 Bavarian Airgun Championships in Munich, Germany, Jan. 24, as a member of the 10m air rifle USA Shooting team, Carpentier became USA s top shooter in the competition. In the first day of the competition, she finished with a total score of 413.6 and ranked 26th among the 87 international and U.S. competitors in the discipline. The following day, Carpentier finished 58th overall with a total of 410.2 points and a final score of 823.8. Carpentier went on to compete in the World Cup USA in Fort Benning, Ga., March 26 to April 4, 2014. Higgins, who had a Minimum Qualifying Score (MQS), competed in the smallbore prone competition. MQS shooters are not eligible for finals at the World Cup, but can shoot to earn the minimum score required in order to become eligible to take part in the Olympic Games or the Youth Olympic Games. On April 1, Higgins traveled to Fort Benning and competed in the MQS in the prone where he scored a 102.2, 104.7, 103.6, 104.0, 102.2 and 104.6 for a total score of 621.3. On March 29, Carpentier finished 28th among 60 international shooters in the ISSF World Cup 10m rifle women s championships. Her scores were 107.7, 103.5, 104.7 and 102.3 (412.2). National Junior Olympic Championships (April 16-28): April turned out to be a busy month for the Air Force marksmen as Simonton competed in the National Junior Olympic Championships, April 16-17. In the women s air rifle, Simonton finished 83rd with a two-day score of 789.3. In the 10m Air Rifle Men s Championships, Rico finished 11th with a 1222.4 score, while Higgins had a 13th-place finish (1221.8), Jacobs finished 19th (1215.4) and freshman Noah Kwock finished 42nd with a 1200.4 (April 18-19). On April 24-26, Higgins finished third with a two-day score of 2314 with a 109 in the shoot-offs in the 50m three-position rifle. Rico and Jacobs finished seventh and eighth, respectively, with a 2299 and 2294 in the finals. In May, during the men s Spring Selection Matches (May 9-11), Higgins took third place in the 50m Prone Men s Championships. Higgins scores were 621.3 (6), 623.1 (6) and 624.6 (6) for a total 1887.0 points. Higgins scores qualified him for his firstever World Championship in the ISSF World Championships in Granada, Spain, to be held in September 2014. At the World s, Higgins will join three-time Olympian Matt Emmons and 2012 Olympian Michael McPhail in the Prone championships. Cadet feature Mary Simonton completed five freefall jumps, nervous but with pride It is not often that a young woman plans to jump out of a perfectly good-flying airplane, but in July, Air Force Academy cadet Mary Simonton (CS23) successfully completed five jumps out of a UV-18B Twin Otter. Her jumps completed the requirements necessary to earn the parachutist badge and rating, which she will carry with pride for the rest of her Air Force career. Parachuting sounds fun and super neat until you are watching the plane gain altitude and you know the only way down is strapped to your back, said Simonton. Simonton, a member of the Academy s rifle team, has a smallbore 565 and air rifle 577 with a cumulative 1142 freshman record. My first flight up, I spent entirely in prayer. There were no butterflies there were pterodactyls flying around in my stomach. The only method I found to calm myself was the same method I use to relax in a match: my keywords are what kept me focused at the job at hand and helped me muster the courage to stand in the door. I stood as terrified as I have ever been in my life with 90% of my body out of the airplane and 92 mile-per-hour winds blowing past and then I heard, GO! and I released adrenaline pumped through my body and utter fascination filled my mind throughout freefall and under canopy. Cadet Simonton is pictured here with other cadets who earned the parachutist badge. My first flight up, I spent entirely in prayer. There were no butterflies there were pterodactyls flying around in my stomach, Mary Simonton. Now, my fifth flight up? I also spent entirely in prayer, continued Simonton. The nerves did not dissipate. However, as soon as I stood in the door the fifth time, I felt an unnatural calm I knew what to do and I knew I could perform it. I cherished my 10 seconds of freefall that time. From my experiences of AM 490, I learned that even with ravaging nervousness, I could still stand in the door and perform to the peak of my ability. In laymen s terms, AM-490 is the Academy s jump program (Airmanship 490). Also successfully completing five jumps was teammate Ryan Jacobs (CS11). Simonton will return to the rifle range this October to compete with her fellow teammates for the 2014-15 season. Tyler Rico (left) successfully made his jumps in 2013. Sophomore Ryan Jacobs also successfully completed five jumps this summer.. 2014-15 Air Force Rifle Media Guide 9

Falcon RIFLE RANGE The Air Force rifle team was host to Nevada in the final home match of the 2014 season in the new Air Force Cadet Rifle Range on Saturday, Feb. 1. Construction on the range began in March 2013, with final completion of the facility scheduled for January 2014. Final touches continued through the next few months, but the rifle team was ready to move into its new home and host the Nevada rifle team on Saturday, Feb. 1. About the New Range: The new range has 16 points versus the 10-points that the old range had, all equipped with the most advanced Megalink electronic target system. The backstop is made of granulated rubber, which will help to reduce noise and lead dust contamination. The additional 6 points will allow Air Force to host the NCAA Rifle Championships in the future. The range features a viewing area of the entire firing line with stadium style seating. Positioned directly above the viewing area are two TV screens, which will display the athletes targets and their scores. Spectators will be able to follow the action during the competition. The team room will also be available for spectators to relax and watch the competition on two 60 plasma TV s. The facility will accommodate the coaches office, gunsmithing room, an armory, and separate male and female locker rooms. The rifle team was training at the Olympic Training Center, and they are extremely excited and cannot wait to start training at the new range, said assistant coach Mike Anti. 2014-15 Air Force Rifle Media Guide 26
