2014 PRSC Club Championship Match October 19 marked the day for the 27 th annual Club Championship Match. Six competitors showed up on a breezy Sunday afternoon to take a crack at this challenging course of fire that hasn't changed since the inaugural match conducted in 1988. A perfect score in this match is 300, accomplished by scoring 100 points in each of three disciplines. The first stage consists of 5 pistol shots offhand at 25 yards at an NRA B-16 target (5 5/16" black) followed by 5 pistol shots seated at 50 yards at an NRA B- 6 target (8" black). The second stage is 5 rifle shots offhand at 200 yards at an NRA Life-Size Whitetail Deer target, followed by 5 shots seated with sling at the same distance and target. The third stage is 20 sporting clays from two alternating traps, consisting of 4 shots at each of 5 different positions & flight trajectories. Only 5 competitors have ever scored over 230 points in this match: 1991 - Buck Buckner - 235. 1992 - R A Cunningham - 238. 1993 - Buck Buckner - 241 (club record). 1996 - Wayne Bloom - 236. 2001 - Elwood Wirth - 232. As of this writing, one third of the annual Championship matches have been won with a score below 200, with the lowest winning score of 170 recorded in 2007. The youngest competitor to win the title was local YHEC champion Byron Morrissey with a score of 222 in 2003. The distinction of becoming the eldest winner remains up for grabs. The match has been contested 26 times since 1988 (the 2008 match was cancelled due to weather). In that time, only 7 persons have won the title: the 5 mentioned above, plus Bill Woodward and David Spaugh. The 2014 PRSC Club Champion is Spaugh with a score of 183. Wirth was 2 nd with a 180, and Bloom was 3 rd with a 160. Bloom took high score in the shotgun stage with a 95, Wirth took the rifle stage with a 35, and Spaugh won the pistol stage with an 83. The match is conducted each October. Get some practice time in this summer and come earn a spot on the club's championship plaque next fall! 2015 YHEC is starting soon The 2015 NRA Youth Hunter Education Challenge begins in January! This program is open to all young outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen under age 19 who have completed a state-sponsored Hunter Education Program. Registration will be January 22nd, 5 PM at the Clubhouse, corner of 8th and Broadway. Participants train and compete in eight events: Orienteering, Wildlife Identification, Hunter Safety Trail, Shotgun,.22 Rifle, Muzzleloader, Archery, and a Written Exam covering The Hunter s Guide course manual. The registration fee is $25 per student and helps cover cost of supplies and ammunition. YHEC classes meet once each week at dates and times that accommodate the schedules of the participants. Firearms training and practice is conducted at the Virtue Flat Range and Baker Trap Club as weather permits. PRSC has.22 rifles, muzzleloaders, shotguns and archery equipment available for youngsters who do not have their own. A statewide YHEC competition is held each June to select 5-member Junior and Senior teams to represent Oregon at the National YHEC Competition held this year at Mansfield, PA. Travel, lodging at meal expenses for each competitor are paid with grants provided by the Friends of the NRA. The Baker YHEC instructors this year are Buck Buckner and Glenda Staebler-Siewell. Registrations are open through February, call Buck Buckner at 541-523-6109 to learn more.
