2 CONTENTS INTRODUCTION 3 United Energy welcome 4 The Smith Family welcome 5 Site map and start procedure 6 Festival key times and getting there 8 Ride details 13 Route map 16 Ready to ride details 18 Member benefits 24 Emergency procedure 25 The Clubhouse 26 United Energy Around the Bay is one of my favourite days of the year. I love standing at the start line are seeing so many different people. There are confident people with smooth, sinewy legs who are about to effortlessly punch out 210kms like it s a Sunday jolly. There are puzzled people asking themselves, Why didn t I train more? I m about to ride twice as far as I ve ridden ever before? There are determined young people on balance bikes who don t think they ll need any help from their loving parents to make the 20kms. But while the difference is fascinating, it s the similarity that s so inspiring, as for one day all you need to belong is to love pedalling. It s a day when the bike tribes merge and everyone admires the commitment of their fellow pedaller. It s also a day when people behind the wheel accept that there will be thousands of riders on their road. Slowing down or waiting a few seconds is a small price to pay to make sure the riders have a great time. There are some great improvements this year with our new major sponsor United Energy, a new start site at Albert Park and a new 300km ride to stretch out those smooth, sinewy legs. But the most important ingredient stays the same, as for one day we get to see Melbourne as it should be: thousands of people on bikes having one of their best days of the year. Volunteers 28 Craig Richards, CEO Bicycle Network

4 5 UNITED ENERGY RIDE FOR KIDS IN NEED Welcome to United Energy Around the Bay. The 26th edition of Around the Bay is here and we hope everyone embraces the spirit of being active and having a fun filled day with family and friends. United Energy s association with this iconic cycling event lets us contribute to the development of healthier, more resilient communities. Like Bicycle Network, we have a real passion for supporting our local communities and it s great that money raised from today s event goes directly to The Smith Family. Whether you re participating in the 20km Enjoy today and good luck Tim Rourke, CEO United Energy or 300km ride, today is about making sure you achieve what you set out to do. If your goal is to beat a time, just finish, spend time with the family or have a laugh with friends, it s all about making today an experience. Melbourne is the best city in the world and some of the views riders will experience as they cycle around the bay are fantastic, whether they re looking back towards the city across the water, taking in the view at the heads or from the top of the West Gate. The changing landscape will hopefully create a fond and long lasting memory with all riders today. The Smith Family is proud to again be the official charity partner for Around the Bay 2018. Since 1993, Around the Bay riders have supported The Smith Family and to date over $11 million has been raised to help disadvantaged Australian children with their education. This year we re aiming to raise $600,000 which will provide more than 1,000 disadvantaged students with the tools and support they urgently need to succeed at school and break the poverty cycle. Good luck on the ride and thanks for your great support! Lisa O Brien, CEO The Smith Family But we need your help to make this possible so make sure you ask your friends, family and work colleagues to sponsor your ride. Just log on to aroundthebayfundraising. com.au to share your fundraising page or make a donation. To all the riders who ve raised funds for The Smith Family through their ride, my sincere thanks. Your support makes such a big difference.
