Starter A.J. Burnett (ND) tossed 8.0 scoreless innings, allowing just 4 hits and 4 walks while striking out 6... He threw 131 pitches, one shy of his career high... Giants starter Madison Bumgarner matched Burnett the entire way, also throwing 8.0 shutout innings... In the top of the 9 th inning, Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon hit a batter and walked two (one intentionally) before Hunter Pence hit a bloop double down the right field line, clearing the bases... Marlon Byrd hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 9 th off Santiago Casilla, but the Phillies rally fell short. ELIAS SAYS: Last night, Hunter Pence's three-run double off Jonathan Papelbon in the 9 th inning broke a scoreless tie in the Giants' victory over the Phillies... Pence was the 68 th batter that Papelbon has faced with the bases loaded in his career... The only others to clear the bases were the Orioles' Robert Andino in 2011 (with a double) and the Blue Jays' Russ Adams in 2007 (grand slam). BROOM STICKS?: The Phillies are looking to avoid their second four-game sweep of the season (previous: 6/27-29 vs ATL, included doubleheader)... The Giants have not swept the Phillies in a fourgame set since August 30 to September 2, 1999 at Candlestick Park, while their last four-game sweep in Philadelphia occurred from July 31 to August 3, 1998 at Veterans Stadium... The last time the Phillies suffered two four-game series sweeps in the same season was 1999 (8/30-9/2 vs SF; 9/6-9 vs HOU)... They have not suffered two four-game series sweeps at home in the same season since 1972 (5/19-21 vs NYM; 6/30-7/2 vs STL)... Overall, the Phillies have been swept eight times already in 2014, their most in a single season since 2004 (9x). HOME SICK: Philadelphia has lost five consecutive home games and nine of their last 10... The current five-game home streak matches their longest of the season (5/5-16)... The Phillies have not lost more than five straight at home since a seven-game stretch from June 27 to July 21, 2012... The Phillies.373 winning percentage at home (19-32) this season is the worst in the majors... Offensively, Philadelphia ranks 28 th in runs per game at home (3.49) and OBP (.296), and 29 th in batting average (.233), slugging (.356) and OPS (.651)... In their 51 home games, the Phillies have been held to three runs or less 28 times (55%), two runs or less 21 times (41%) and one run or fewer 15 times (29%), including eight shutouts. RISP-Y BUSINESS: The Phillies have lost seven of their last eight games after a season-high-tying five- game winning streak (7/7-11)... In those eight games, Philadelphia is batting.188 (15-80) with runners in scoring position and they have left 63 men on base (7.88 per game)... During their fivegame winning streak, the Phils batted.361 (13-36) with RISP, including seven extra-base hits (5 2B, 2 HR)... In their 101 games this season, the Phillies have left 733 men on base (7 th -most in MLB) with a.229 average with RISP (3 rd -lowest in MLB). THE STARTING LINE: Philadelphia s starting pitchers have combined for only 27 wins in their 101 games this season, tied for 2 nd -fewest among all Major League starting staffs this season (TEX 26 W in 101 G; MIA 27 W in 100 G)... They have been saddled with the loss 44 times, T-3 rd most in MLB (SD 47; HOU 45; MIN 44)... Phillies starters have thrown 53 quality starts this season, but have received the 2 nd -worst run support average in the majors (3.90 runs per 9.0 innings)... From 2009 to 2011 (486 G), Philadelphia s starting pitchers led all of MLB with 212 wins (2 nd : NYY, 206). THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS: The Phillies have lost each of their last five games against San Francisco, which is their longest losing streak to the Giants since a nine-game losing streak from June 3, 1999 to August 25, 2000... The visiting team has won each of the last four series between the two clubs... The Phillies have also lost each of their last four home series against San Francisco, including this week (3-9 home record since 2011), and are 17-17 (.500) in 34 home games against the Giants since Citizens Bank Park opened in 2004. RY-NOTES: Inducted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005 (76.2% of the vote), Ryne Sandberg spent 16 years in the major leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies (1981) and Chicago Cubs (1982-94; 1996-97)... He won the 1984 NL MVP Award, was a 10-time All-Star, and won nine gold gloves and seven Silver Slugger Awards... From 1982-93, Sandberg led all NL players in hits, runs, total bases, at-bats and times on base... He was originally selected by the Phillies in the 20 th round of the 1978 draft before being traded to Chicago following the 1981 season... In 2,164 career games, Sandberg batted.285 with 282 HR, 1,061 RBI and 344 stolen bases... Sandberg spent six years as a manager in the minor leagues for single-a Peoria (2007-08), double-a Tennessee (2009), triple-a Iowa (2010) and triple-a Lehigh Valley (2011-12)... Ryno was named 2010 Manager of the Year for the Pacific Coast League and Minor League Manager of the Year in 2011 by Baseball America.
