World Record Holder Largest Beach Volleyball Tournament HEATWAVE EVENTS for SickKids Celebrating 21 Years of Success HEATWAVE Events for SickKids will be celebrating the 21 st Anniversary on Saturday July 11 to Sunday July 12, 2015 at Woodbine Beach and Ashbridge s Bay Park, Toronto. Heatwave for SickKids Hospital s first beach volleyball tournament was held at Ashbridge s Bay Park, Toronto in 1995. Since then it has grown to 12 regional events taking place throughout southern Ontario. These 12 annual regional events now host approximately 750 Corporate Teams (up to 7,000 players) an estimated 30,000 players/ spectators. In 2012, Heatwave hosted the 2012 Volleyball Canada Pro Beach Volleyball Olympic Trials in July with the Heatwave Corporate Team Challenge Event in Toronto. SickKids Foundation is thankful for the unwavering support of these wonderful corporate Heatwave Events and their role in helping SickKids become a global leader in childhood cancer research. In September 2013, SickKids opened a new chapter in global leadership in child health with the completion of the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning. The Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning, soaring 21 storeys above Bay Street at the eastern gateway to Toronto s Discovery District, is a beacon, signaling SickKids is ready and determined to make an even greater impact on child health in Canada and around the World. The Centre brings together 2,000 researchers, trainees and research staff into six research neighbourhoods, and along with its learning facilities, will serve as a catalyst to fuel innovation and discoveries benefiting generations of children to come. The Heatwave Events funded two new HEATWAVE research labs in The Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning. The labs are on the 16 th floor in The Garron Family Cancer & Stem Cell Biology Neighbourhood. Researchers in the Cancer & Stem Cell Biology neighbourhood will look for more effective treatments for childhood diseases, such as cancer and cerebral palsy, through further development of cutting-edge stem cell technologies and regenerative medicine. SickKids is already Canada s largest childhood cancer treatment centre and a major contributor to international paediatric clinical trials. In 2015, the Heatwave Events for SickKids will continue to expand its commitment to childhood cancer and continue to fund two Heatwave research labs and childhood cancer research at SickKids.
