BEGINNER SWIMMING LESSONS ADVANCED Preschool (Tot Deck) Designed for children 3 to 5 years of age (ultimately will depend on child s water experience). Participants will be in water 18 inches deep and taken out on the tot deck by the instructor and instructor aides. Level #1 - Water Exploration Designed for the beginning swimmer to feel comfortable in and enjoy the water safely. Fundamental water safety and skills focusing on fun are emphasized. This group will work on putting their faces in the water, floating on their front of back, and holding their breath under water while beginning movement in the water. Level #2 - Primary Skills Designed for swimmers who are comfortable in the water but still need support from an instructor. Participants will learn basic swimming skills, back and front floats, coordination of arm and leg motion, rhythmic breathing, self-help in the water, and basic rescue skills. Level #3 - Stroke Readiness Designed for swimmers to develop additional swimming techniques while reinforcing confidence in previously learned strokes. Swimmers aim to coordinate the front and back crawl, treading water, beginning diving skills, and underwater swimming. Level #4 - Stroke Development Designed for swimmers who enjoy the deep end while working on skills. Focuses on perfecting previous strokes, learning the side stroke, breaststroke, and butterfly stroke, and introducing advanced diving skills. Water safety and rescue skills continue during class. Level #5 - Stroke Refinement Designed for swimmers to build stroke refinement and endurance in each of their swimming strokes. Refinements maximize fluidity of water movement and introduces stroke implementations for swimming longer distances. Also expands on stroke mechanics and introduces flip turns, surface dives, and springboard diving with a further continuation of safety skills. Level #6 - Swimming Proficiency Designed for advanced swimmers looking for something different and challenging. Swimmers choose from four different areas to address during the session: Fitness Swimming, Fundamentals of Diving, Lifeguard Readiness, and Personal Water Safety. AQUATICS AT THE EASTSIDE YMCA // SPRING SWIM LESSONS EASTSIDE YMCA SWIM PROGRAM LEVELS swim basics program STAGE 1 (WATER ACCLIMATION), STAGE 2 (WATER MOVEMENT), & STAGE 3 (WATER STAMINA) Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills: Swim, float, swim - sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll - front glide and exit Jump, push turn, grab. STAGE 1 (WATER ACCLIMATION) Students develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. AQUATICS AT THE EASTSIDE YMCA // SPRING SWIM LESSONS swim strokes program STAGE 4 (STROKE INTRODUCTION), STAGE 5 (STROKE DEVELOPMENT), & STAGE 6 (STROKE MECHANICS) Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity. Children will be placed in the appropriate stage by Y staff based on their ability. STAGE 4 (STROKE INTRODUCTION) Students in Stage 4 develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke. STAGE 5 (STROKE DEVELOPMENT) Students in Stage 5 work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive strokes.
