Newsletter of the Dallas Downriver Club Visit our website at www.down-river.org December 2002 FINE PRINT - The DDRC Current News is published monthly by the Dallas Downriver Club and is provided to its members either by First Class postage or the internet because of its superior quality. Opinions expressed herein are those of the individual authors, based upon their First Amendment rights to say whatever silly thing they want to. They may or may not reflect the opinion of the club or its officers, and if you think we re going to be stupid enough to sit around and argue about whose opinions are whose, or we really care about whose opinions are whose, well your opinion is wrong, but we re not bozos about it. DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION of articles, announcements, monetary offerings, or virgin sacrifices is absolutely and positively due before publication. Generally if you get something to the editor by the 1st week of the month, it will be in that month s newsletter DDRC BOARD MEETINGS are held every second Thursday of the month - 6:30 PM @ Enchilada s (directions on back of newsletter). All members are welcome to attend to learn more about club business. Hey Folks!!!! PAGE 2 NEWSLETTER OF THE DALLAS DOWNRIVER CLUB VISIT OUR WEBSITE AT WWW.DOWN-RIVER.ORG Newsletter EMAIL Problems If your email address comes back with a mail failure notice, you will be deleted from the recipient list for an electronic copy of the DDRC Current News until we get a request to be added back with a current email address. For reference we get back about 10-15 invalid email addresses each month, so it is a bit of a pain to keep everything up to date. So if you d like to get the newsletter electronically, or haven t been getting it and you re wondering why, it s most likely because we don t have your correct email. Send the editor your updated email address at: fredcrowley@teamhealeytexas.com The electronic version is in color, and can be read by any access method to the internet that you re using. We post the DDRC Current News to an anonymous FTP site, and an email is sent to our email address list indicating where the newsletter is and how to access it (this eliminates the problem of some email servers having file attachment constraints). The newsletter is in Adobe Acrobat pdf format, and can be down-loaded and saved to your PC. Typical file size is 2-3 Mbytes, so it can take a few minutes, if you re connected via dial-up. As a participant in any DDRC activity, an individual assumes the responsibility of evaluating all inherent risks before participating and assumes any risk of death or injury inherent in the sport. The participant waives claims that may arise against the club, its officers, members, servants, agents and/or trip coordinators, for death or injury to person or property, including claims of vicarious liability and claims arising from civil recklessness or any degree of negligence. Not waived are claims against an individual who causes injury intentionally or with criminal recklessness and claims among driver, owner and passengers of a motor vehicle for injuries. NEWSLETTER OF THE DALLAS DOWNRIVER CLUB VISIT OUR WEBSITE AT WWW.DOWN-RIVER.ORG PAGE 3 White Rock Lake Cleanups Every Second Saturday While the DDRC doesn't officially conduct White Rock Lake cleanups anymore, that's no reason to not help with ongoing cleanup events. Every second Saturday morning you can show up at Sunset Bay or under the Mockingbird bridge and help with either of the two cleanups that two great organizations are carrying on. Meet new and old friends. Get on the water! Help cleanup your own backyard! Mariner Sails manages the cleanup that begins under the Mockingbird bridge. See http://www.mariner-sails.com/kayaking_events. htm for more details. "For the Love of the Lake" manages the cleanup usually at Sunset Bay/Dixon Branch. See http://www.whiterocklake.org/flotilla/index.htm for more details. Both of the links above are on the home page of the Dallas DownRiver Club at http://www.down-river.org/ Would You Like to Represent DDRC at the Texas Parks & Wildlife Meetings? Canoeing in Winter This is an opportunity to attend TP&W meetings - generally tied to TP&W river trips. You would need to attend several times a year (or monthly if your schedule permits!). Typical issues addressed cover boat licensing, Caddo Lake resources. Preference is for someone who has been paddling for a while. Contact: Ken Locke 214-823-5263 klockps@swbell.net

PAGE 4 NEWSLETTER OF THE DALLAS DOWNRIVER CLUB VISIT OUR WEBSITE AT WWW.DOWN-RIVER.ORG PROPOSED DDRC BYLAW AMENDMENT It s not often that the DDRC needs to get into the more formal aspects of running the club, however an issue is starting to arise that needs attention. We have been having some problems with checks bouncing, and the bank fees associated with this often exceed the check amount, subsequently we end up losing money unnecessarily. Currently Article 2, Section 8 of our Bylaws state: Assessments. No special mandatory assessments over and above the regular dues shall be levied on the members of the corporation. REMINDER! WE NEED YOUR MONEY! 2003 Membership Renewal DDRC membership renewal for 2003 is $20, and is due by 1 January. Remember - you can t vote unless you re a member. Your dues support the activities of the DDRC and of course this superb newsletter!. MOST MILES PADDLED IN 2002 Here s a Chance For Some Good Braggin Rights The proposal is to amend this Bylaw to read: Assessments. No special mandatory assessments over and above the regular dues shall be levied on the members of the corporation, except any member who writes a check to the DDRC that is returned for insufficient funds will be responsible to pay the original amount as well as any and all applicable fess incurred by the club. This amount will be considered due and payable upon receipt of the check from the bank and membership will be suspended until all funds are repaid. This was reviewed at the November meeting and will be voted upon by the membership at the January 2003 meeting. TRINITY RIVER CHALLENGE Volunteers Needed Right Now! Thanks to support of all the volunteers, sponsors, and especially Al Currie, Trinity River Challenge 20002 was a major success. Building upon this momentum, we are in the planning stages for TRC 2003. Volunteers are needed to get the program underway. If you d like to be part of a great program, please contact any Board Member to express your interest and enthusiasm to support this great race. Submit your entries before the January meeting. Results will be announced at the February meeting. Entries need to have; Your Name, address, and phone number Dates of Trips Distance of each trip Witness to the facts.
