BRECON MARKET STORE CATTLE REPORT Friday 27 th May 2018 Store Cattle 1060 It was simply a record entry which resulted in the best trade of the year to date. At one stage the steers were averaging 250p/kg but by the end of the sale they did ease back to an incredible 247p/kg to include all types and the heifers averaged 236p/kg and 978 per head. It was well ahead of all recent sales and we had a ring which was full to capacity. The quality and quantity of cattle on offer certainly contributed to the trade and it was a pleasure to offer such a good yard full of cattle and although purchasers did comment on how dear the cattle were in comparison they still appreciated the type of cattle which were on offer. The last lot at 6pm was certainly as dear as the first lot at 10am and everyone enjoyed a premium trade. Cattle came from all directions including an excellent run of cattle from Messrs Jerman of Caersws (38) which averaged 1110 on 12 month old steers and heifers topping at 321p/kg while it was good to see Messrs E A Davies, Pantmeinog back with 38 exceptional cattle (10-12) months which averaged 1178 topping at 1390 for an exceptional show potential animal at 390p/kg being a Limousin x steer. While Messes J A V Mills of Llanerchllwyd enjoyed a similar trade on another exceptional run of 30 steers & heifers which topped at 327p/kg for a young Lim x heifer 11 months at 415kg. It was a fantastic entry of cattle and our thanks and appreciation goes to every vendor who contributed to one of the best sales of store cattle in Wales. Top prices were as follows: Steers Per Head BRB X 640kg 1475 WCR Cooke & Sons, Nantyderi Lim X 390kg 1390 EA Davies, Pantmeinog Lim X 580kg 1370 PL & OJ Watkins, Caenant Melyn BRB X 515kg 1360 JM & AM Lewis, Pentwyn Lim X 590kg 1355 E&G&R&C Pugh & Son, Great House Lim X 570kg 1350 Price Bros, Pen Y Garn BRB X 505kg 1325 EA Davies, Pantmeinog Lim X 540kg 1320 BG Price, Brynteg Lim X 545kg 1320 WCR Cooke & Sons, Nantyderi Lim X 590kg 1305 E&G&R&C Pugh & Son, Great House Lim X 580kg 1305 E&G&R&C Pugh & Son, Great House Lim X 550kg 1305 DW & CP Thomas, Hengrofft

The top call was 1590 for an exceptional cow from J A V Mills, Llanerchllwyd while the overall average was again up on last month at 165p/kh topping at 218p/kg and this resulted in an average of 1020 per head. More cows are desperately needed to maintain this strong competitive trade at Brecon and please contact us if you have stock to sell. Breeding Stock We have a strong demand for breeding stock at Brecon however this sale saw no cows with calves forward however any strong heifers suitable for breeding met with plenty of demand and we even had buyers from the Scottish boarders looking for replacement heifers. A smart 415kg heifer from T W Price & Morgan made 1470 and was dispatched to Scotland while 2 heifers from Mr W C R Cooke were sold for 1430 and 1400 and both went as replacements to a Welsh suckler herd. More breeding stock is needed, especially heifers or cows with calves. BRECON FATSTOCK SALE REPORT TUESDAY 1 st May 2018 Prime Hoggets (659) Yet again Brecon leads the way in trade. Considering we are coming to the end of hoggets season we had an excellent entry of quality and meat - but we are still having the odd lean hogget. Buyers were very keen to bid on the right hoggs. Topping at 280pkg for a pen of 45.5kg was E & A Lewis, Neuaddau, with several other pens sold over 260pkg. The lighter hoggets were also a lot sharper being sold to an average of 226pkg topping at 259pkg. We did have an excellent show of over 48kg hoggets selling to an average of 235pkg topping a 225pkg ( 134.02). We can see the hoggs drying up over the next couple of weeks, which may increase demand but not sure that trade can get much better. We can mange 300 plus lambs now every week as buyers were screaming for them. SQQ 292p/kg Cull Sheep (379) An entry which saw full buying support in front of us and what a trade. The yard consisted of a lot of lean ewes. We though the ewes were going to slow up but they keep coming. Topping at 119 was RJ Davies, Wern Fawr. Several other pens sold over 95 - even plain sorts. The lighter culls sold to an average of 48. We can sell over 500 here in Brecon and we need 500 to manage our strong buyers support. Average 64.65 Top Prices:
