In addition, the Team Reps have put out file folders for each family in a box next to the record Board. WHAT?? Donut Monday started Wed, a week early!!! Thank you Moms, YUMMY, YUMMY Penguins Waddle to Win in Season Opener By, Parent and Guest Contributor.Ernie Bower Ever notice that the first question of the morning can sometimes stump you, even if it's as simple as "Is it raining?" You just aren't awake yet, not firing on all cylinders. So it was for Da Penguins of CCF as they rolled out of their proverbial beds and lumbered into Haymarket to face Evergreen Country Club last Saturday. "We got this," mumbled a sleepy Danny O'Donnell as he yawned and traversed the threshold at the ECC pool. Really? Young Mr. O'D was not alone in his assessment. The coaches, parents and even most of the Evergreen posse' shared his view. But not the Evergreen team, especially their boys. They noticed the somnolent aura around our Penguins and smelled a chance for upset. They hit the pool hard, and while CCF served up some incredibly wacky combinations of swimmers in official and unofficial heats, the Green Tornado kept its head down and started posting up points. The turning point came when the score was announced about an hour into the meet by an Evergreen official who was literally trying to whisper into the microphone like a British golf announcer too close to the green, "the score after Event 12 is... Evergreen Country Club 80... Fairfax 58". Suddenly whistles slipped from the Coaches lips, the Washington Post slumped into a heap on Richard Schwartz's lap, Eileen Balberde ripped a score card inadvertently, even Tom Griffin, known for his composure in tense situations bit his bottom lip and leaned against his alter-ego Bruce Chafin, almost imperceptibly. Yep! We were losing this meet. Our first of the year, and one we should have dominated. Boy did things change fast. The Coaches rallied, Penguins grimaced with intensity, parents cheered until hoarse, water churned and lo and behold, we recovered and won. But a lesson was learned, and it was good it was learned early and did not result in an "L" -- the Penguins can't and never should take any team in the league fore granted. The other squads want nothing more than BBQ'd Penguin for a late lunch on any given Saturday. This week the Penguins are practicing in earnest, and while the sport is about fun, improving your own times, and camaraderie, let's face it -- Fairfax has a winning tradition and its in our DNA to play fair and perform well. That's what we will see from this point forward in '007. Page 2
