Former Red Wings defenseman Mathieu Schneider elected to U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Brendan Savage on August 03, 2015 at 12:40 PM, updated August 03, 2015 at 1:01 PM Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Mathieu Schneider is among four people who have been elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, it was announced today. He's joined by Ron DeGregorio of USA Hockey, former NHL forward Chris Drury and four-time Olympic medalist Angela Ruggiero. "It's just such an honor to not only be inducted but to be inducted with the quality of people and friends like Chris and Ron, who I've known for so long," Schneider said Monday. "Angela, I remember sitting the in the lounge in Nagano after we had got knocked out watching the women's team win the gold medal. Just an amazing feat, an amazing milestone for hockey and the U.S. "USA Hockey has given so many children, so many athletes, opportunities that just aren't available in so many countries around the world. We're all extremely privileged to be part of USA Hockey and this is for me one of the greatest days of my career. "I appreciate everything that I've been able to achieve through the help and support of USA Hockey and obviously having the opportunity to play with so many great athletes." The Red Wings were among 10 teams Schneider played for during 21 NHL seasons. Schneider spent all or parts of four seasons with the Red Wings after being acquired on March 11, 2003 in a trade that saw the Red Wings send Sean Avery, Maxim Kuznetsov and a first-round draft pick to the Los Angeles Kings. In 231 regular-season games with the Red Wings, Schneider had 48 goals, 116 assists and 224 penalty minutes. In 33 playoff games, he had four goals, 13 assists 36 PIM. Schneider's plus-33 rating in 2005-06 ranked fifth in the NHL. His 21 goals in 2005-06 make him one of four Red Wings' defensemen to score at least 20 in one season. The others are Flash Hollett, Reed Larson and Nicklas Lidstrom. His 11 power-play goals that season tied the club record by a defensemen set by Larson. Schneider is also one of three Red Wings' defensemen to score a hat trick after getting three goals on Nov. 25, 2005 vs. the Coyotes. Larson and Lidstrom after the others with hat tricks. He ranks 14th among Red Wings defensemen with 164 points. He left the Red Wings after the 2006-07 season to sign as a free agent with Anaheim and finished his career by playing three games for Phoenix in 2009-10. 4

"It was such an honor to just put on a Detroit Red Wings uniform for me," Schneider said. "The first day I put it on was in Phoenix. I had just gotten traded the day before. That was such a special moment. "You walked into that dressing room and I had obviously a good friend in Chris Chelios, but you see Nicky Lidstrom and Steve Yzerman, Brett Hull and Luc Robitaille I mean you just look around that dressing room and it was a Hall of Fame dressing room. Just putting that jersey on the first time was really one of the most special memories for me. "Coming from the beginning of my career in Montreal my first five and a half years, just a tremendous organization, you feel like you're playing for something bigger than the jersey you're putting on when your part of that history in both of those organizations. It was an honor and privilege just to put on that jersey. That was probably one of the most special days for me." Schneider began his career in Montreal, where he was the Canadiens' third-round pick (44th overall) in the 1987 NHL entry draft. Schneider helped them win the 1993 Stanley Cup while also playing for Toronto, the Islanders, Rangers, Vancouver and Atlanta. In 1,289 career regular-season games, Schneider had 223 goals, 520 assists and 1,245 PIM. Only Chelios, Mike Modano, Phil Housley and Jeremy Roenick have played more games among players born in the U.S. Schneider played in two NHL All-Star Games, represented Team USA in the 1998 and 2006 Olympics, won a gold medal at the 1996 World Cup and ranks among the top-five American-born defensemen in nearly every offensive category. Today, he's works for the NHL Players Association as a special assistant to the executive director. The Class of 2015 will be inducted Dec. 17 at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel. Tyler Bertuzzi, Zach Nastasiuk, Jake Paterson called Red Wings' top three prospects coming out of OHL Brendan Savage on August 03, 2015 at 6:06 AM, updated August 03, 2015 at 6:07 AM Tyler Bertuzzi has established himself as one of the Detroit Red Wings top prospects after a breakout season for the Ontario Hockey League's Guelph Storm as well as a strong showing in the AHL playoffs with the Grand Rapids Griffins. So it was no surprise to see Bertuzzi atop the list of the Red Wings' prospects coming out of the OHL, according to OHL Prospects, which is taking a look at all 30 NHL teams and their most promising youngsters. Bertuzzi, who the Red Wings selected in the second round (58th overall) of the 2013 NHL draft, is atop a three-player list that also includes forward Zach Nastasiuk and goaltender Jake Paterson. Bertuzzi erupted for 43 goals last season 15 more than he has scored in the previous three OHL seasons combined. He also had 55 assists to finish 10th in the OHL scoring race. His 98 points were 21 more than his previous three seasons combined. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound nephew of former Red Wings forward Todd Bertuzzi also scored his first pro goal during a two-game regular-season stint with Grand Rapids before bagging six goals and two assists in nine playoff games for the Griffins. Nastasiuk, the Red Wings second-round pick (48th overall) in the 2013 draft, capped his OHL career with 35 goals and 42 assists in 64 games for the Owen Sound attack last season before joining Grand Rapids. Zach Nastasiuk The 6-2, 202-pound Nastasiuk finished his OHL career with 89 goals and 98 assists in four seasons. In the last two seasons, he appeared in 22 games with Grand Rapids 11 in the regular season and 11 more in the playoffs. Paterson, the Red Wings third-round pick (80th overall) in the 2012 draft, split last season between the OHL's Saginaw Spirit and Kitchener Rangers before finishing the year with the ECHL's Toledo Walleye. In 24 games for Saginaw, where he played the previous four seasons, Paterson had a 12-11-1 record, 3.48 goals-against average and.901 save percentage before he was dealt to Kitchener during a youth movement. In 26 games with the Rangers, he had a 14-10-2 record, 2.37 GAA and.929 save percentage. His 2.90 overall GAA ranked seventh in the OHL, his 32 victories were fifthbest in the league and his.918 save percentage ranked third among the league's top netminders. 6

The 6-1, 183-pound Paterson had a 1-0 record, 1.50 GAA and.951 save percentage in two appearances for Toledo. Bertuzzi and Nastasiuk are slated to start the season in Grand Rapids. OHL Prospects thinks Bertuzzi could be contributing in Detroit in another year while saying Nastasiuk is a potential third or fourth-line player for the Red Wings "in the near, and not distant future." That seems rather optimistic given the depth the Red Wings have at forward both in Detroit and Grand Rapids, where the likes of prospects Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha, Andreas Athanasiou and Mitch Callahan are more experienced and more likely to make the jump to the NHL before they do. Paterson will almost certainly start the season in Toledo given that Tom McCollum and Jared Coureau are ahead of him on the depth chart in Grand Rapids. Here's a quick look at some of the things OHL Prospects said about all three players: "Bertuzzi really took a massive step forward this year with the puck on his stick. He's always excelled without the puck, as a complimentary player who knows where to be and how to fight through contact. But this year he showcased skill and patience with the puck that he had not yet displayed in his OHL career. Bertuzzi was effective off the rush, but also coming off the wall, shaking off checks to create scoring chances in the slot and near the crease. His hands in close are great and he doesn't need much time to get a great wrist shot off. This is key, because he's still not the world's greatest skater. Another aspect of his game that was better was his discipline. Way less stupid penalties, and did more of the agitating, as opposed to being the one agitated." "Nastasiuk looked quicker this year, and even though he never developed into a dominant force off the rush, he was more successful creating with speed and using his size to drive the net. Nastasiuk has a good shot and has done well to improve his overall puck protection ability in the open ice to give him the opportunity to use it. But it's in other areas that Nastasiuk's game is most valuable. He's so smart away from the puck, creating turnovers in the middle of the ice by forcing the opposition into defenders and by using an active stick. He's a physical player, even though the penalty minute numbers wouldn't suggest it. That's because he's smart about it and does a great job of using his size to his advantage without being reckless. And as captain of the Attack, his leadership qualities can not go understated." Red Wings prospects: Jake Paterson Jake Paterson split last season between Saginaw and Kitchener of the OHL. "Paterson was consistently one of the better goaltenders in the league. When Kitchener made the trade for Paterson, it brought a lot of backlash from some fans, but it was ultimately the right choice because his play elevated them to the playoffs. And even though the team (and Paterson to some extent) struggled in the first round, it gave their younger players valuable experience. Paterson was able to correct some of the issues he had with his positioning and reads in 2013/2014, regaining his form. And while he's not a huge goaltender, he does a good job of staying up as long as he can and being aggressive in challenging shooters to make himself big. He's also athletic 7

enough to make 2nd/3rd saves and has long been one of the toughest goaltenders to beat in the shootout." Michigan Live LOADED: 08.04.2015 8

USA TODAY /Chris Drury, Mathieu Schneider among inductees to U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Leslie Spalding, 9:53 p.m. EDT August 3, 2015 Chris Drury, Mathieu Schneider, Angela Ruggiero and Ron DeGregorio have been selected for induction into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame as the Class of 2015, USA Hockey announced Monday. The formal induction of the Class of 2015 is set for Dec. 17. Drury won a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 2001, is a three-time medalist in international competition, and is the only player to capture the Calder Memorial Trophy and Hobey Baker Memorial Award. He helped Boston University earn the NCAA title in 1995. A four-time Olympic medalist, Ruggiero was a dominating force on the blue line throughout her 15-plus-year career with the U.S. women's national team. Schneider won a Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens in 1993, helped the USA earn the inaugural World Cup of Hockey title in 1996, and is among the top five American defensemen all-time in the NHL in nearly every statistical category. DeGregorio has helped shape American hockey for more than 40 years. Perhaps his most significant concept was starting USA Hockey's National Team Development Program in 1996. Bob Duff: Mathieu Schneider inducted into U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame By Bob Duff / Windsor Star Through his two-decade NHL career, Mathieu Schneider was afforded the opportunity to play for four of the six so-called Original Six NHL teams, and Monday, as he was announced as one of the 2015 inductees in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, Schneider admitted that yes, playing for the Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers was vastly different from suiting up for the Phoenix Coyotes, Atlanta Thrashers and New York Islanders. There s no question that it s something special, without a doubt, Schneider, 46, said. My first five years being with Montreal, being young and naïve I kind of assumed that that s the way it would feel anywhere. I was traded to the (New York) Islanders and it was a much different feeling the next year playing in Long Island. Schneider was a Stanley Cup winner with the Habs in 1992-93, but he wasn t so fortunate on his second stop along the Original Six trail, his tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1996-98. Being in Toronto at the time, it was a kind of a blessing and a curse, honestly, Schneider said. I thought I was going back to a similar situation to Montreal, but it was an organization that was going through a lot of struggles and a lot of change. It was a difficult couple of years. (Coach) Pat Burns had gotten fired the day before I got traded there along with Wendel Clark. It was a tough couple of years. Schneider, who joined Chris Drury, Ron DeGregorio and Angela Ruggiero, whose brother Bill played junior and college hockey in Essex County, as 2015 inductees, is fifth all-time in NHL games played by a U.S.-born player with 1289. He also played for the New York Rangers from 1998-2000 and was a Detroit Red Wing from 2003-07. As well, Schneider suited up for the Thrashers, Coyotes, Vancouver Canucks, Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings during his 21-season NHL career that ended in 2010. The other two (Original Six) teams that I played for, the New York Rangers and the Detroit Red Wings, it was truly special, Schneider said. I enjoyed my time with other clubs as well, but playing for those teams is unique and special. They were certainly great organizations as well. The Wings acquired Schneider from the Kings at the 2003 NHL trade deadline. He tied a Wings record for defencemen with 11 power-play goals in 2005-06 and is one of only four Detroit defenders to post a 20-goal season and among three Red Wings rearguards to record a hat-trick. 10

It was such an honour to just put on a Detroit Red Wings uniform for me, Schneider said. The first day I put it on was in Phoenix. I had just gotten traded the day before. That was such a special moment. You walked into that dressing room and I had obviously a good friend in Chris Chelios, but you see Nicky Lidstrom and Steve Yzerman, Brett Hull and Luc Robitaille I mean you just look around that dressing room and it was a hall of fame dressing room. Just putting that jersey on the first time was really one of the most special memories for me. Coming from the beginning of my career in Montreal my first five and a half years, just a tremendous organization, you feel like you re playing for something bigger than the jersey you re putting on when your part of that history in both of those organizations. It was an honour and privilege just to put on that (Red Wings) jersey. That was probably one of the most special days for me. 11
