UNOFFICIAL SECOND HALF COMMENCES--The Royals have 87 games in the books this year, six more than the official midway point, but tonight resumes play for all of baseball as clubs return to work following the American League s 2-1 win in the All-Star Game on Tuesday night...with 75 games remaining, Kansas City finds itself in third place, three games out in the cramped A.L. Central, while trailing in the Wild Card by a 1 1/2 games...for the fourth straight year, the Royals come out of the break in possession of a winning record, currently at 44-43...the 2014 club was 48-46 when the All-Star Game came around, then lost the first four games out of the break to fall to 48-50, before a 24-6 stretch put the Royals in the Wild Card hunt and eventually landed in the World Series...Kansas City s most recent work was a 3-3 road trip that started great with three straight wins in Seattle, but was followed with a 3-game sweep by the Dodgers in L.A. last weekend. WHERE D THE TIE COME FROM???--If you scour the box on the left you ll note that the Royals and Rangers have a deadlock on the all-time series...that contest occurred here on May 24, 1983, when the game was called after five innings due to rain, with all game statistics counting despite no outcome reached...mike Smithson of the Rangers and Paul Splittorff of KC each worked the five innings and gave up a pair of runs, with Texas taking a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth on a Larry Parrish solo homer and then the Royals tying the contest in the home half when George Brett single and scored on Hal McRae s triple...then the skies opened up and the game was called. HOME FOR 10--Tonight starts the third and final 10-game homestand of the season for Kansas City with the Rangers here through Sunday, followed by a pair of A.L. Central rivals with Detroit in for four and the White Sox next weekend for a 3-gamer...the Royals are 24-19 on the year in Kauffman Stadium, including a 7-3 mark on the last homestand which featured series wins over Boston (2-1), Toronto (2-1) and Minnesota (3-1)...KC has gone 4-0 with a split in its last five series in The K... once this extended stay is completed, the Royals will have just 28 home games left on the 2017 docket while 37 are slated for the road, including a make-up game in Yankee Stadium on September 25 (12:05 KC time) from a May 25 rainout in the Bronx. ALL-STAR REVIEW--All three Royals named to the 2017 American League squad participated in Tuesday s game, eventually won by the A.L., 2-1 in 10 innings... Salvador Perez, participating in his fifth Midsummer Classic and as a voted member of the starting lineup for a fourth straight year, caught the first five innings, going 0-for-2 at the plate...jason Vargas, named to his first All-Star squad, worked a scoreless fourth inning, allowing a single to Colorado s Nolan Arenado, but then benefitting from a Mookie Betts throw from centerfield to double Arenado off at second base for a double play...mike Moustakas, who won the Final Vote competition for a second time in three years, entered defensively in the seventh inning and went 0-for-2 and was on deck when Robinson Cano ended the contest with a home run. ACE 30 REMEMBERING YO--The morning of January 22, 2017 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in franchise history when word was received that pitcher Yordano Ventura had his life cut short due to a car accident in his native Dominican Republic...signed as a 17-year old in 2008, the fireballing right-hander compiled a 38-31 during his abbreviated Major League career...among many highlights, Ace will be most remembered for blanking the San Francisco Giants over 7.0 innings in Game #6 of the 2014 World Series to force a seventh and deciding game, while pitching with a heavy heart himself due to the untimely passing of his friend Oscar Tavares...to honor the late Ventura, all uniforms in 2017 will be adorned with the ACE 30 patch. WORKING AGAINST THE WEST--Tonight opens a 3-game set with Texas and resumption of play against the American League West...the Royals have a 14-10 ledger when battling the West this year, including a 4-game winning streak (Angels-1 and Seattle-3) and an 8-2 mark in the last 10...Texas has been the one hiccup on the slate, with KC going winless in a 4-game stop in Arlington back in April...in other divisional work, the Royals are just 13-21 within the A.L. Central, with play resuming with 10-straight intradivisional matchups starting Monday vs. Detroit...KC has gone 10-8 in its last 18 Central battles after an abysmal 3-13 start...the Royals are 12-7 vs. the A.L. East and will resume play with that division on the next road trip with three in Boston and three in Baltimore...the three losses last weekend in Dodger Stadium dropped Kansas City to 5-5 in Interleague play, with 10 still on the docket. PATIENCE PAYING OFF--Lorenzo Cain received his 34th walk of the year last Saturday in L.A., now just three walks shy of his single-season best...he established his career-high in 2015 with 37 free passes. MOOSE ON RECORD PACE--Monday s Home Run Derby had the right guy from Kansas City, though Mike Moustakas came up a roundtripper shy of matching the 12 home runs hit by Minnesota s Miguel Sano in the opening round...moose entered the break clubbing six home runs in his last 11 games to raise his season total to 25, which is good for third in the American League and in a fifth place tie in the Majors with LA s Cody Bellinger...Moustakas has already broken his personal single-season best of 22 from 2015 and hit three more home runs prior to the All-Star break than any Royal in history, breaking Jermaine Dye s mark of 22 in 2000...Moose remains on a pace that would shatter Kansas City s long-standing club record of 36 roundtrippers hit by Steve Balboni during the 1985 season...his 25 home runs to this point translate to 47 over the remainder of the campaign. THUNDER FROM DOWN UNDER--Reliever Peter Moylan made his 41st relief appearance of the year last Saturday, the 34th in which he did not allow an earned run... the 38-year old from Australia, has been nothing short of spectacular since May 24, allowing just two earned runs in a total of 15.2 innings, spanning 19 appearances, for a 1.15 ERA with 18 strikeouts...he had allowed 16 earnies through his first 15.0 frames of the year for a 9.60 ERA, though 14 of those 16 runs scored over just three appearances with two 5-run and a 4-run outing. ESKY TURNAROUND COINCIDES WITH CLUB SUCCESS--Kansas City s 18-9 run in the last 27 games has coincided with Alcides Escobar s offensive resurgence, as the durable shortstop has hit.327 (35-for-107) with 16 runs scored in that span...esky was hitting.178 on the year entering play on June 10, but has since raised his average 48 points to its present.226...though patience is far from a virtue for Escobar, who has walked just six times on the year including none in the last 28 games...he s made a club-record 258 consecutive starts at shortstop dating back to September 26, 2015, the longest active streak in the Majors, according to the Elias Sports Bureau...the last MLB team to have the same starting SS in that many consecutive games was the Orioles, who had Miguel Tejada as their starting shortstop in 284 games from April 4, 2004 through August 20, 2005...should Esky get to 285, he will have the longest such streak since Cal Ripken started 2,216 consecutive games at SS for the Orioles from 1982 to 1996. DUPE KC S SECRET WEAPON--Replay specialist and team eagle eye Bill Duplissea has not made a challenge since July 3 in Seattle when he made his 19th of the year and got a reversal on Whit Merrifield s bunt attempt in the eighth...duper is 14-for-19 for a 74% success rate, which is currently the second best mark in the Majors... Duplissea also requested a Crew Chief review of Danny Espinosa s home run on June 16 in Anaheim that was flipped into a foul ball upon review, but Dupe does not receive statistical credit for a Crew Chief review...bill closed 2016 as the best in baseball at his craft with a 69.2% success rate, making good on 27 of 39 challenges, with the Mets next at 67.7% (21-for-31). AT THE HELM--The winningest manager in franchise history, Ned Yost is in his seventh full season with the club, taking the reins on May 13, 2010...he enters tonight at the.500 mark, currently at 593-593, which is a huge accomplishment considering he had a 198-253 mark in his first two+ seasons in charge, but is since 395-340 (.537)... his win total has shattered Whitey Herzog s previous team mark of 410 wins (1975-79)...Yost is the 16th full-time manager in franchise history and is seventh among active managers is games (2,145) and wins (1,050)...his postseason record of 22-9 represents a.710 winning pct., which is tops among all managers who have been at the helm for at least 20 postseason games...he s also 2-0 in managing the American League All-Star team, winning in both Cincinnati ( 15) and San Diego ( 16), the last two times the home field advantage was determined by the All-Star outcome...this is his second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers (2003-2008)...he compiled a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons...yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox s big league staff (1991-2002). vs. Rangers (2017) vs. Rangers (career) At Home (career) Perez (career) Hamels (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Bonifacio.286 7 2 1 1 Butera.333 9 3 0 0 Cain.273 11 3 0 1 Escobar.071 14 1 0 0 Gordon.067 15 1 0 0 Hosmer.200 15 3 0 0 Merrifield.250 12 3 0 1 Moss.091 11 1 0 0 Moustakas.231 13 3 1 2 Perez.000 9 0 0 0 Soler Torres.286 7 2 1 1.271 48 13 1 3.270 100 27 0 3.234 175 41 0 18.202 253 51 8 25.277 155 43 8 22.222 18 4 0 2.232 181 42 10 24.262 107 28 3 7.212 104 22 3 13.241 108 26 4 7.200 495 99 3 35.297 1221 363 25 162.265 2190 580 17 197.262 2390 626 77 317.279 1793 501 51 264.286 311 89 6 42.230 1423 328 61 197.253 1306 330 44 170.277 1337 370 42 196.262 408 107 16 55.368 19 7 0 2.333 3 1 0 0.167 6 1 0 0.200 5 1 0 0.000 5 0 0 0.400 5 2 0 1.333 3 1 0 0.000 2 0 0 0.167 6 1 0 0.000 3 0 0 0.250 8 2 0 0.250 8 2 0 1.167 18 3 0 1.273 11 3 0 0.000 10 0 0 1.333 3 1 0 0.000 3 0 0 0.000 8 0 0 0.000 3 0 0 0 Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
