The Utes are in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2009 event, when they were also a No. 5 seed. They are making their first trip to the Sweet 16 since 2005 and are looking to advance to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1998. Utah has the most wins of any team in the nation by 20 or more points (15) and they are sixth nationally in scoring margin (+15.2). Delon Wright, the USBWA District VIII Player of the Year, has been named as a finalist for the Wooden, Cousy and Naismith Awards. He is just the second Ute to amass 1,000 points, 375 rebounds, 350 assists, 150 steals and 70 blocks in a career (Josh Grant) Wright became the first Ute since Hanno Mottola and Alex Jensen in 1998-99 and 1999-2000 to earn consecutive first team all-league honors. He was also named to the Pac-12 s All-Defensive Team. Brandon Taylor was named Second Team All-Pac-12 and earned an honorable mention to the All-Defensive Team. Jakob Poeltl was also selected to the All-Freshmen Team. The Utes are one of seven teams recognized by the NCAA to have reached the Sweet 16 every decade since the 1950 s (Kentucky, Kansas, Indiana, North Carolina, Louisville and Syracuse). 2014-15 Runnin Utes At A Glance # Name Pos. Utah NCAA Background Utah has never been a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament but is playing in the South Region for a third time. Utah was a No. 6 seed in 2005, knocking off UTEP and Oklahoma in Tucson, Ariz., before falling to Kentucky in Austin, Texas. Utah was also a No. 12 seed in 2002, losing to Indiana in Sacramento. Duke and Utah have met once before in the NCAA Tournament. Vic Bubas Blue Devils topped Jack Gardner s Utes in the 1966 national third place game, 79-77, at Cole Field House in College Park, Md. Utah is 2-5 against current ACC teams in NCAA Tournament play. Utah is 2-6 all-time against No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament. Both wins occurred in 1998 when the Utes beat Arizona in the regional final and North Carolina in the national semifinal. Utah has lost two in a row against No. 1 seeds (Kentucky, 03; Michigan State, 00). The most recent trip saw the Utes fall to Kentucky during the Sweet 16 in Austin in 2005. The most memorable game in Texas occurred in 1998 when Utah beat No. 1 North Carolina in the national semifinals held in San Antonio. Two nights later, Utah lost to Kentucky in the championship game. The Utes visited Dallas in 1996, topping Canisius, coached by John Beilein and Iowa State, coached by Tim Floyd, in the first two rounds. In 1981, Utah topped Jim Calhoun s Northeastern Huskies in El Paso during the Round of 32. Clamping Down on D A big reason for Utah s improvement last season was the defensive effort. The Utes ranked second among Pac-12 teams in defensive points per possession. This year, Utah currently ranks 11th in scoring defense (56.9 ppg) and seventh in field-goal percentage defense (38.2%). It is also fourth in the nation at defending 2-point shots (40.9%), ninth in points allowed per possession (0.89) and 10th in effective points against (56.0) In road/neutral contests, Utah is holding its opponents to 58.2 points per gameand the team needs 15 blocks to match the single-season record of 186 (2009-10). Offensive Efficiency Utah is currently shooting 48.5 percent from the field, 13th in the nation. That number is buoyed by Jakob Poeltl shooting 68.9 percent (1st - P12) and Delon Wright (52.2%; 7th - P12) Utah is seventh in 3-point percentage (40.4), 11th in true shooting percentage (59.4%) and points per shot (1.2), 13th in effective field goal percentage (56.1) and 15th in points per possession (1.12) Utah s 260 3-pointers this season are the most in it s history. The Utes made 242 in the 2008-09 season Multi-Dimensional Delon Delon Wright became Utah s first All-Pac-12 performer after a breakthrough campaign last season and was awarded with another All-Pac-12 nod in 2015. The guard was also named to the All-Defensive Team for the second time after finishing second in the league in steals (2.0) His 82 steals last year were second only to Andre Miller s single-season mark of 84. He currently needs seven steals to catch Pace Mannion (1979-83) for third all-time at Utah This year, Wright was second in the league in assistto-turnover ratio and ranked third in assists (5.3). Last year, he had one of the best single-season assist marks with 174 (5.3 per game). Wright finished second in the conference in free-throw percentage (.913) and was among the league leaders in field-goal percentage (7th) and scoring (10th). Last season, he led the league in minutes played and ranked among the Pac-12 s top 10 in field goal percentage (3rd), assist/turnover ratio (5th), blocks (6th) and scoring (10th). In the off-season, Wright was one of 30 collegiate players nationwide invited to take part in the LeBron James Skills Academy. He was also named the 2014 Collegiate Athlete of the Year for the state of Utah. Taylor Trending Upward Brandon Taylor now ranks sixth all-time at Utah with 177 3-pointers during his career. He is eight shy of Phil Dixon (1989-94) for fifth place. His accuracy also has him among the Utah greats as he is 10th all-time with a 39.5 3-point percentage. This year he ranked third among all Pac-12 players, shooting 45.7 percent from beyond the arc and led the league with an average of 2.7 3-pointers made per game. Taylor is also an astute point guard, finishing third in the league in that category (2.5) and eighth in the league in assists with 3.8 per game Taylor also ranked among the league leaders in steals (1.2-12th) and is the Ute representative on this year s NABC Good Works Team. Loveridge Making Leap Jordan Loveridge is currently ninth among current Pac- 12 players in career scoring, second among juniors. He is also fifth in rebounding, third among juniors. Last season, Loveridge ranked 10th in the Pac-12 in rebounding (7.0) and 12th in scoring (14.7), while racking up six double-doubles. He is currently 22nd alltime in scoring average at Utah (13.4 ppg). After missing seven games to injury during the non-conference schedule, Loveridge returned to the starting lineup and led the league in 3-point field goal percentage (.451). He also registered his first doubledouble and 11th of his career in the win over Colorado Poeltl Putting Up Big Numbers Jakob Poeltl has burst on to the scene this season for the Utes. Defensively, he is having an impact, ranking third in the Pac-12 in blocks and 10th in rebounding. Poeltl has already set the single-season mark for a freshman and he has two games where he has denied five shots or more Poeltl could also very well set the mark for field goal percentage (58.8) by a freshman. In fact, only two other players in Utah history have averaged over 8.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and blocked 40 shots as a freshman; Andrew Bogut and Keith Van Horn. Utah Tradition The Utes have a long and outstanding history of basketball excellence. Utah is among the top 15 all-time in Division 1 for wins and winning percentage while also ranking fifth with 32 conference championships. Utah is third all-time among Pac-12 teams for most invites, trailing only UCLA (48) and Arizona (32). The Pac-12 has had six teams capture a national championship. Utah has been ranked 17 weeks in a row by the Associated Press, the most since the 1997-1998 FInal Four campaign Balanced Ute Attack One of the goals of the early season for Coach Krystkowiak was to get more playing time for some

of his younger players. So far, this plan seems to be working. The Utes have the best scoring margin in the league despite only having two players among the top 30 in scoring and none in the top 10. Also, after seeing his starters rack up a ton of time on the court last season, Utah has no player among the top 10 in minutes. New Utes Produce The Utes added four other scholarship players for this season; Brekkott Chapman, Kyle Kuzma, Isaiah Wright and Chris Reyes. Kuzma, a four-star commit was ranked by Scout.com as one of the best power forward recruits in the country. He has led the team in scoring twice, including a 19-point performance vs. UC Riverside. Chapman, a local product, was ranked as high as No. 12 in the class of 2014 by ESPN. He scored a season-high 22 points in the win over South Dakota State. Wright was named the Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year and MVP of the state title game. He has two games with five or more dimes, including an 8-assist performance vs. UC Riverside Reyes, a transfer from St. Mary s (CA) and Citrus College, was named the Western State Conference MVP. He is currently third on the team in rebounding and grabbed a season-high 10 boards at UNLV. Striving for Success in the Classroom Head coach Larry Krystkowiak has put an emphasis on excellence on the court and in the classroom during his tenure. Last year, four players were named to the Dean s List (3.5), eight to the Honor Roll (3.0) and 14 players achieved a GPA above a 2.7 mark Jeremy Olsen and Brandon Taylor were each named to the Pac-12 All-Academic First Team and a record five Utes earned accolades (Lenz, Tucker, Bachynski). Three players were named to the NABC Honors Court, one of only three Pac-12 schools to be recognized and Taylor was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District squad. MUSSter Up This off-season, the team also took part in a Navy SEAL program to help build mental and physical toughness. This unique team-building experience benefitted the coaches and student-athletes involved by preparing them for the rigors of the upcoming season. Live Elevated: Huntsman Strong This slogan refers to the Huntsman Cancer Institute and their commitment to making the world a better place through innovative research techniques and cancer treatment opportunities. Huntsman Cancer Institute patients live elevated through the hope of longevity brought to life by the foundation s team of doctors and healthcare professionals that provide compassionate, state-of-the-art care. Being Huntsman Strong is more than a statement, it s a way of life that enables any individual affected by cancer to benefit from the latest advances in cancer diagnosis, treatment, and prevention strategies. Increased Visibility All 30 regular-season men s basketball contests were televised this season with 14 games on the Pac-12 Networks, a program-record 13 on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU and three on Fox Sports 1. This marked a new visibility standard for the Utes who were on an ESPN channel a total of five times during the first three years in the Pac-12. It also eclipsed the program mark set by the 1999-2000 and 2003-04 teams who were on an ESPN channel 12 times during their respective regular seasons. How I Spent My Summer Vacation... In China University of Utah men s basketball head coach Larry Krystkowiak, along with student-athletes Jordan Loveridge, Brandon Taylor and Jeremy Olsen, traveled to China for a four-game all-star tour this summer as part of the Pac-12 Conference s Globalization Initiative. The aim of the initiative was to help support Pac-12 member universities international outreach efforts, build their brands in an important market, and provide quality educational and cultural exchange experiences for student-athletes. Loveridge, Taylor and Olsen helped make up a squad that went 3-0 against two teams from the Chinese Basketball Association and one group of university all-stars. The Pac-12 squad defeated the Shanghai Sharks who are owned by eight-time NBA All-Star Yao Ming and the Guangdong Southern Tigers, 2013-14 Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) regular season champion. The Tigers leading Chinese scorer was Yi Jianlian, who played for the NBA s Milwaukee Bucks under Krystkowiak during the 2007-08 season. In addition to the competition in China, the team participated in various youth clinics, as well as take in the culture and history of China with visits to various landmarks and historical sites in the cities of Shanghai, Nantong and Shenzhen. Future Utes Gabe Bealer and Makol Mawien have signed their National Letters of Intent and will join the Utes for the 2015-16 season. Bealer, a 6-6 wing from the City College of San Francisco, averaged 12.9 points on 54.7 percent shooting, 6.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game for the Rams last year. CCSF is also the same school that produced current Ute Delon Wright. Mawien, a 6-9 post player from Granger High School in West Valley City, is rated as one of the top players at his position and in the state of Utah by a number of recruiting outlets. He was born in Egypt before moving to the United States in the third grade. He has played his AAU ball with Utah Prospects and was a teammate of current Ute Brekkott Chapman Construction Begins on Huntsman Basketball Center Utah Athletics broke ground on the Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Center, a state-of-the-art facility that will house both the men s and women s teams, at a ceremony in May The new facility will feature a Utah Performance Center, housing state-of-the-art sports medicine and strength and conditioning facilities. It will also contain film rooms, locker rooms, two gymnasiums, lounge areas, a nutrition center, a media center and office space for coaching staffs. The 80,000-square-foot center will be located just northwest of the 15,000-seat arena bearing the Huntsman name. As part of the project, renovations to that building are underway. Lighting, sound and draping for other sports, as well as two grand entrances for a hall of fame and legacy hall, are among the arena priorities. The project is slated to wrap up in July of 2015. Huntsman Center Renovations Since the close of last season, the Jon M. Huntsman Center has undergone some drastic changes. Regarded as one of the top college arenas in the nation since opening its doors in 1969 and serving as a landmark on the U. campus, the Jon M. Huntsman Center is the perfect place to watch a sporting event. With 15,000 chair seats assuring a great view from anywhere in the arena, it is the largest venue in the Pac-12 Conference. Listed below are some of the things that fans can experience when they visit the renovated Jon M. Huntsman Center this season. Removal of the original ceiling cloud above the scoreboard to accommodate the installation of a new super grid system - the new super grid will improve the ability of the arena to accommodate the increasing event needs for both Athletic and Special Events A new maple wood floor surrounded by a defining black border and a large block U at center court, ranked third in the nation by a recent ESPN poll New energy efficient LED lighting throughout the arena that will increase brightness levels for televised games while reducing operation costs. The same LED lighting has also been installed on the concourse level to increase the brightness for patrons upon entry and during concession stand purchases all at a lower energy output This will also accommodate quick on-off status changes so for player introductions the lights can be turned down and spot lights can focus on the team & players Total upgrade to a new state-of-the-art sound system that will bring better PA clarity and new ceiling mounted sound panels that will assist with the legibility of the sound within the arena A new curtaining system will allow the upper bowl to be blacked out creating a more intimate setting for events (less than 9,500 capacity) New backdrop curtains provided for commencement and new graphics on the walls of the lower bowl comprising of a red background and the Circle and Feather, Muss and Crimson Club logos
