The 32nd-ranked Aztecs, who are making their 17th consecutive regional appearance and 20th overall, will be among the field vying for a spot in the NCAA national championship series, scheduled for May 29-June 3 in Bradenton, Fla. SDSU received the No. 6 seed out of 14 teams in the New Haven Regional, earning one of 30 automatic bids to the NCAA tournament after winning its third Mountain West championship in the last five years on May 3. A total of 81 NCAA Division I schools received invitations to play in one of six regional events that will be held concurrently this week in Bremerton, Wash. (Washington), Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. (USD), Lubbock, Texas (Texas Tech), Noblesville, Ind. (Ball State) and Chapel Hill, N.C. (North Carolina). Joining the Aztecs on the par-70, 6,803-yard Course at Yale this week will be 13 other teams, including seven foes ranked in the Golfstat top 50, along with five individual competitors (75 golfers overall). The top five squads and two low individuals not on an advancing team will move on to nationals from each of the six regionals. Teams will complete 18 holes (54 total) of stroke play each of the three days, following a practice round on Wednesday, May 13. SDSU will be paired with Oklahoma State and Arkansas for Thursday s first round, which is set to get underway from the 10th tee at 8:20 a.m. ET (5:20 a.m. PT), while Friday s second round starts as early as 8 a.m. ET (5 a.m. PT). The competition then concludes on Saturday, with final-round action slated to begin at 7:30 a.m. ET (4:30 a.m. PT). Live hole-by-hole results courtesy of Golfstat will be available for all three rounds on GoAztecs.com. SDSU Lineup 2014-15 Avg. The combination was utilized at both the Lamkin San Diego Classic and the MW Championship while comprising five-sixths of the SDSU delegation at the Western Intercollegiate last month. Schauffele and Michelini will be making their third straight regional appearances this week, while Mendoza finds himself in the thick of the fight for the second year in row, joining first-time competitors Ree and Samiere. At the Columbia Regional in Missouri last year, Schauffele was the Aztecs highest finisher, landing in the 20th spot out of 75 players, followed by Michelini (T-38th) and Mendoza (T-43rd). Schauffele, who owns a team-best 70.61 scoring average, enters this week s tournament ranked 21st nationally in the latest Golfstat Cup standings. Aztecs At NCAA Regionals Since the NCAA regional format was first implemented in 1989, SDSU has received a bid on 20 occasions, including a current streak of 17 straight from 1999 to 2015. However, this year marks the farthest east the Aztecs will participate in a regional event after traveling to Columbia, Mo., last year. SDSU has placed in the top 10 on nine occasions, highlighted by a team title at OMNI Tucson National Golf Club in 2011. The lowest score in regional competition for the Scarlet and Black also occurred that season when it posted a combined 19-under 833 en route to the seven-stroke victory. Two-time All-American J.J. Spaun set three Aztec regional records at Stanford Golf Course in 2012, including lowest score (12-under 198), lowest round (7-under 63) and best individual finish (2nd). The record for best single round by an SDSU golfer at a regional was previously held by Magnus Carlsson, who shot a 6-under 66 in 1999. The Aztecs have advanced to the national championships 27 times in school history, including six times (1999, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2012) since the regional format made its debut. Formerly a 700-acre tract of swamp and woodland, the site was donated to Yale University in 1924 by Mrs. Ray Tompkins in memory of her late husband and was soon developed with a budget of $400,000. According to its website, The Course at Yale is described as a fine example of early American golf course design, with its large, deeply bunkered greens and rolling fairways challenging the golfer. In 2013, Golfweek rated the Yale layout 35th on its list of best classic courses, while Golf Magazine had it ranked at No. 71 out of the top 100 courses in the United States in 2011. From the championship tees, Yale maintains a course rating of 72.9 with slope of 134. In addition to this week s event, the course has served as host to two USGA junior events, the 1991 and 2010 NCAA East Regionals, the 1991 ECAC men s championship, the 1992 ECAC women s championship, as well as the Nike Connecticut Open. The Course at Yale also provides a home competition and practice venue for the Yale men s and women s cross country teams. Backspin: 2014 NCAA Columbia Regional San Diego State saw its 2013-14 campaign come to a disappointing conclusion with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Columbia Regional Championships at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo. The Aztecs shot a 4-under par 284 during the final round to complete the tournament with a 54-hole total of 2-over 866 on the par-72, 7,141- yard course layout. Despite posting its lowest team score of the weekend, SDSU slipped one place from the previous day as Iowa State (-15) and LSU (-15) secured the final two spots from the Columbia Regional in the 2014 NCAA championship series in Hutchinson, Kan. Oklahoma State (-33) captured the regional title by five strokes over Arkansas (-28), while host Missouri (-27) landed in the third position. Junior Xander Schauffele was the Aztecs top individual at the event, recording a team-best 68 over the final 18 holes to finish alone in 20th place out of 75 golfers at 3-under 213. The Scripps Ranch High alumnus drained five birdies on the day compared to just one bogey en route to his ninth round of the year in the 60s. Ricky DeSantis was the only other SDSU player to log a red number on Saturday, firing a 2-under 70 to end the tournament in a tie for 26th at even-par 216. The 2014 Mountain West Freshman of the Year got off to an inauspicious start with two bogeys over his first four holes before storming back with 10 pars and four birdies. Meanwhile, Riccardo Michelini finished three shots in back of De- Santis in a tie for 38th at 3-over 219. The Aztec sophomore was a model of consistency early on, completing a stretch of 10 pars and one birdie, before an untimely triple-bogey at the par-4, 411-yard No. 3 stymied his progress on the individual leaderboard. Despite sinking two additional birdies down the stretch, Michelini was unable to overcome bogeys at Nos. 5 and 7, ultimately carding a 74. Elsewhere, Nahum Mendoza III and James Holley could not establish a rhythm after each made an eagle on their first hole, the par-5, 530-yard No. 10. Despite matching Schauffele with five birdies overall, including three straight to end the round, Mendoza was undermined by three bogeys and two double-bogeys and had to settle for a 72. With his effort, the SDSU freshman and Francis Parker High product wound up in a tie for 43rd at 5-over 221 in his first-ever regional appearance. Likewise, Holley was plagued by two double-bogeys of his own at Nos. 11 and 15 en route to a final-round 74. The Aztec junior also made birdie at No. 12, finishing the tournament in 56th with a combined 10-over 226. Missouri s Emilio Cuartero (-11), who began the day in a tie for seventh, shot a 65 over the final 18 holes to capture medalist honors by one shot over teammate Hunter Kraus and the Oklahoma State duo of Jordan Niebrugge and Talor Gooch, who all tied for the runner-up

Awards Aplenty San Diego State head coach Ryan Donovan has been named 2014-15 Mountain West Men s Golf Coach of the Year, while Xander Schauffele, Ryann Ree and Nahum Mendoza III each earned a spot on the all-conference team, as announced by the league. With his award, Donovan garnered the third MW Coach of the Year accolade of his career, while Schauffele landed on the all-conference team for the third straight season, joining first-time honorees Mendoza and Ree. In addition, the selections give the Aztec three all-mw picks for the second year in a row. Now in his 12th season, Donovan has directed the Aztecs to another successful campaign, highlighted by their third MW championship in the last five years and securing the program s 17th consecutive NCAA regional bid in the process. In addition, SDSU claimed the team title at its own Barona Collegiate Cup in February, giving the squad eight top-five placements in 12 tournaments this year. The Aztecs are currently ranked 32nd nationally by Golfstat and boast a combined head-to-head record of 116-38-1, which amounts to a.752 winning percentage. A native of Yorba Linda, Calif., Donovan was a four-year member of the SDSU men s golf squad from 1997-2001, before earning his degree in public administration and playing professionally. He returned to The Mesa as an assistant coach in 2003, and later was elevated to head coach, where he has guided the Aztecs to 135 top-10 tournament finishes, 97 top-five performances, 28 team titles and five trips to the NCAA national championship series. Under Donovan s guidance, SDSU golfers have garnered 23 all-mountain West accolades and 10 all-region honors, while four of his players have been named to eight All-America teams.following the 2010-11 campaign, Donovan earned the first of two straight MW Coach of the Year awards and was named EatonGolf Pride Division I West Region Coach of the Year. Individually, Schauffele leads the Aztecs with a 70.61 stroke average and has been the team s top player in 10 of 12 tournaments during the 2014-15 season, including a runner-up finish at the MW Championship on May 3, where he tied the tournament s second-lowest score ever at 9-under 204. In all, the SDSU senior has seven top-five placements to his credit this season, including a medal-winning performance at the Barona Collegiate Cup, where he established a school-record for lowest score in relation to par with a blistering 17-under 199. For his effort, the Scripps Ranch High alumnus received the first of three straight MW Golfer of the Week awards. Schauffele, who won the California State Amateur championship and finished second at the Western Amateur in the summer of 2014, is currently ranked 21st in the Golfstat Cup standings. In addition, Ree has given the Aztecs a tremendous boost this spring after joining the team in mid-january, The junior transfer from the University of Oregon sports six top-20 finishes to go with 72.00 scoring average, which ranks second on the squad. At the MW Championship, Ree shot a final-round 67, matching a season-best to climb 12 places into a tie for fourth at 5-under 208 en route his highest finish in a Scarlet and Black uniform. He was also SDSU s top golfer at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, where he tied for 14th in a strong field and was the team s No. 2 finisher in three other events. Mendoza, meanwhile, was the third Aztec to place in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard at the MW Championship, where he tied for seventh with a combined 4-under 208. The SDSU sophomore ranks third on the team with a 72.70 stroke average and finished among the top 20 in four additional tournaments, including a runner-up effort as an unattached competitor at Barona, where he posted a career-best 14-under 202. Mendoza was also the Aztecs No. 2 golfer at the University of Arizona s National Invitational Tournament in March, tying for 10th at even-par 216. Rewind: Aztecs Rally to Win MW Championship San Diego State captured its third conference title in the last five years after firing a collective 9-under par 275 during the final round of the 2015 Mountain West Championship at OMNI Tucson National Golf Club on May 3. The Aztecs, who entered the day 11 shots behind UNLV in third place, combined for 19 birdies to help overtake the Rebels by one stroke. With its total, SDSU set a school record for lowest score in MW Championship play, finishing with a collective 17-under 835 to top UNLV (-16), Nevada (-10) and New Mexico (-9), while Colorado State (+13) finished a distant fifth on the par-71, 7,144-yard Catalina Course. The SDSU resurgence was fueled by Xander Schauffele and Ryann Ree, who each fired a 67 during the final round. Schauffele posted his highest finish ever at the MW Championship, landing in the runner-up spot on the individual leaderboard with a combined 9-under 204. The Aztec senior drained five birdies on the day, including back-to-back conversions at Nos. 3-4 as well as the 10th and 11th greens, to finish just two shots behind medalist Kurt Kitayama of UNLV (-11). Schauffele also made a critical sand save later in the round at the par-4, 470-yard 18th. Shortly thereafter, Kitayama, who was playing in the final group, had a chance to force a team playoff with a par, but registered a bogey-5 instead. Ree, meanwhile, got off to a torrid start, sinking five birdies of his own on the front nine, including a successful make on the par-4, 485-yard No. 2, which ranked as the toughest hole of the final round. The junior transfer, who reeled off eight straight pars through the turn, recorded just one blemish on his scorecard, a bogey at No. 17, to complete the tournament at 5-under 208. With his effort, Ree tied his lowest round as an Aztec, climbing eight places into a three-way tie for fourth with UNLV s Carl Jonson and Corey Eddings of Nevada, who finished two shots in back of another Wolf Pack golfer, Nick Fuller, for third. Riccardo Michelini and PJ Samiere each contributed to the Aztecs winning total after tying for 24th at 5-over 218. Despite two bogeys on his final three holes, Michelini recorded his lowest round of the weekend with a 70, notching four birdies, including a successful conversion on the sprawling par-5, 587-yard No. 8, which ranked as the third-most difficult hole of the final round. With his performance, the SDSU junior vaulted 12 places on the leaderboard after ending the second round in a tie for 36th. Samiere continued his upward mobility as well, leaping an additional four spots after notching his second straight 71 during the final round. The Aztec freshman offset three bogeys with a trio of birdies, completing his first MW Championship appearance just two shots out of the top 20. Despite firing a final-round 73 which did not count toward SD- SU s team score, Nahum Mendoza III still finished in the top 10, slipping four spots into a tie for seventh at 4-under 209. The Aztec sophomore recorded birdies on two of his last four holes; however, four bogeys, including two to begin his round, thwarted his progress. 2014-15 Season Capsule San Diego State is enjoying another successful campaign, placing among the top five as a team in eight out of 12 tournaments, highlighted by its third Mountain West championship in the last five years. After posting three top-five finishes during the fall schedule, the Aztecs opened their spring slate in convincing fashion, sweeping both the team and individuals title at the revived Barona Collegiate Cup in February. SDSU shot a combined season low 31-under 833 to win by 12 shots over USD. At Barona, Schauffele claimed medalist honors for the third time in his collegiate career after posting the school s lowest score ever in relation to par with a 17-under 199. With his performance, the SDSU senior garnered the first of three straight MW Men s Golfer of the Week accolades. In addition, Schauffele captured the award for logging a pair of runner-up finishes at The Prestige at PGA West as well as the National Invitational Tournament at OMNI Tucson. For the season, Schauffele leads the Aztecs with a 70.61 stroke average and seven top-five finishes, completing a team-best 18 rounds below par, including 12 in the 60s. Participating at The Prestige for the fourth straight season, SDSU recorded a strong third-place team finish in an elite field that featured seven top-20 squads. Along with Schauffele, PJ Samiere is the only other Aztec to compete in all 36 rounds for the Scarlet and Black this season. SDSU s top freshman during the 2014-15 campaign with a 73.22 scoring average, Samiere boasts a pair of top-10 finishes, including a fifthplace effort as an individual at the season-opening Southwestern Intercollegiate. The Aztecs have also received a tremendous boost from junior Ryann Ree, who became eligible in mid-january after transferring from Oregon. A native of Redondo Beach, Ree posted a 72.00 stroke average with six top-20 performances, including an fourthplace tie at the Mountain West Championship. In addition, he was the team s top finisher at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, where he landed in the 14th position. Just A Chip Shot Away The top five schools and two individuals (not on those qualifying teams) will advance out of the New Haven Regional to the NCAA championships, May 29-June 3, at Concessions Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. The Aztecs have qualified for the national championships 27 times in school history, including six occasions (1999, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2012) since the regional format made its debut. A total of 30 teams and six individuals will play 54 holes of stroke play over a three-day period to determine the individual national champion. The final three days will feature match play between the top eight squads for the national team title.
