COUNTY NEWS Spring Leaders Meeting Spring Leaders Meeting will be held on April 24th from 6:30-8:00 pm. Fair Preparation along with a couple house keeping items will be the topics. If anyone has any questions please let Lindsay know. Please remember, if you haven't attended Annual Leaders Training yet this year, you need to do this by April 1st! Superintendent Meeting We will be having a Superintendents meeting on May 21 st from 6:30-8:00 pm at the Muscatine County Extension Office. Superintendents, plan on attending this session to find out more about the Fair book changes and a demonstration on how to use Fair Entry. Stampeding Clovers host Muscatine Special Needs Easter Egg Hunt Stampeding Clovers are hosting the 11th annual Muscatine Special Needs Easter Egg Hut, Sunday April 8th from 2-4pm at the Rock n Boot Ranch 2505 Bayfield Road Muscatine, Iowa 52761. All ages are welcome to attend! Please contact Kathy Smith at 563-506-1829 for questions or if you would like to help! There will also be a petting zoo, if anyone would like to bring their pet to count as a citizenship project. 2
CLOVER KIDS CORNER Please Join us You are Invited!! If you are in K-3rd grade come to our next Clover Kids meeting to see what the hype is all about! Our Next meeting will be Tuesday April 10th 2018 from 3:30 5pm at the Muscatine County Extension Office. Come join in on all the fun that Clover Kids experience through STEM activities, crafts, games and much more! For more information please contact Dana 563-2635701 or dana@iastate.edu. 4-H Field Day Join us on April 28th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Muscatine Island Research Farm. 4-H ers will have the opportunity to tour the Muscatine Island Research Farm while learning about farm machinery, research conducted, planting & transporting seedlings, gather information to help with an ag-related fair project and more! Please see at the end of the clover for the registration form that needs to be filled out and returned to the Extension Office by April 20th. 3
BEYOND THE COUNTY Iowa Sheep Industry Association Scholarship 2018 A $500 scholarship will be awarded to high school seniors or to students presently enrolled in a two or four-year College. Scholarship is based on individual scholastic performances, leadership, citizenship experiences, and sheep related activities. provide a verified 3.0 GPA in high school or current college. Deadline to apply is April 15. http://iowasheep.com/index.html Sign Up for Fair Queen Now is the time to think about running for Muscatine County Fair Queen or you can be a member of the Junior Court. The sponsorship fee is $25 for junior or queen. For more information or to have a registration form mailed to you, contact Stephanie Anderson at 563-260-3591. LIVESTOCK INFO Sheep/Meat Goat Weigh-in May 5th ~ 7:30-9:30 am Large Show Ring, Fairgrounds, West Liberty NOTE: Dairy goats do not need to be brought to the weighin. They do need a tattoo and birthdate and are to be ID d through 4-H online. County Fair - All lambs and meat goats need to be brought to be tagged. Commercial ewes and meat goat does will be tagged, but not weighed. Market sheep and market meat goats will be weighed and tagged. State Fair - All State Fair sheep (market, commercial, and purebred breeding) must have a state 4-H tag, be weighed, and have retinal images taken. State Fair meat goats (market wethers and breeding does) must have a state 4-H tag (or tattoo for does). Market wethers will be retinal imaged. Cost for animals retinal imaged for State Fair is $5.00 per head. Aksarben All animals for Aksarben must have a 4-H tag and will have hair pulled for DNA sampling. There is an additional $5.00 charge for animals identified for Aksarben. (Aksarben is a regional livestock show held in September in Omaha, NE, for 4-H members only). Contact the Extension Office if you have questions. Scrapie s Tag All sexually intact sheep and meat goats must have a scrapie tag. Iowa 4-H Animal Science Round Up Iowa 4-H Animal Science Round Up is a three day tract for 4-H youth to learn more about their livestock project. It is held in conjunction with the Iowa State 4- H Youth Conference in Ames. Animal species studied include beef, sheep, swine, dairy cattle, and poultry. Dates for Round-Up and State Conference are June 26-28 on the Iowa State University campus in Ames. Broiler Derby Birds for the Broiler Derby need to be ordered in early May for delivery. LIVESTOCK INFO 4-H ENDOWMENT Rabbit and Poultry FSQA Rabbit and Poultry FSQA will be held on May 1st from 6:30-8pm at the Muscatine County Extension Office. 4-H ers who plan to show beef, a bucket calf, swine, sheep, meat or dairy goats, poultry, or rabbits (exception is a pet rabbit) at the Muscatine County Fair and/or the Iowa State Fair must be Food Safety and Quality Assurance (FSQA) certified. 4-H members can check to see when their FSQA certification expires by logging into 4hOnline, click on the Go to Family button, then scroll down to see your member s name. If you have been FSQA certified your expiration date will be listed below your name. Those who have tested out will be honored through 2018. Please Contact the Extension Office if you have questions. Dog Obedience Classes Begin Dog Obedience classes will begin on Wednesday May 9th from 6:00-7:00 pm in the large show ring on the fairgrounds in West Liberty. Classes will be held on Wednesdays until the start of fair. Because Classes will be indoors, they will not be canceled due to rain. Note: Before you can bring your dog to classes you must have proof that your dog has the following shots up to date by providing a copy of their shot records from your veterinary rabies, distemper/parvo, and Bordetella. Please bring these records to the first class you attend. Muscatine County 4-H Endowment provides enhanced experiences for Muscatine County 4-H Members by way of educational trips, conferences, camp experiences and service learning. We also offer many other forms of member and volunteer recognition. The next funding cycle for the Muscatine County 4-H Endowment is due on May 22. LIVESTOCK INFO UPCOMING EVENTS Livestock ID s Due May 15th Reminder: Livestock ID s are due in 4hOnline no later than 11:59 pm on Tuesday, May 15. To do this, login to 4hOnline at https:// iowa.4honline.com. After you click on the Edit button next to the 4-H member s name, look for the Animals/Livestock link towards the top of the page. Clicking on that link will take you to the animal ID page. Select a species from the drop down menu and fill in the requested information. DON T FORGET TO HIT SAVE! Animals that must be identified in 4hOnline are beef, bucket calf, dogs, goats (meat & dairy), horse, sheep, and swine. Rabbits that will be entered in the 4-H show at the Iowa State Fair must have a tattoo in their ear and be identified in 4hOnline by July 1.. FairEntry Night June 4th State Youth Conference June 26-28. Grades 8th -12th and the cost is $180 Summer Horse Show Dates. Dates for the summer horse shows held at the horse arena at the Muscatine County Fairgrounds have been set. May 20- Fun show with timed events only. Show starts at 9:00 am June 10 th - Regular Show starting at 9:00 am July 9 8h - Regular show starting at 9:00 am August 19 th - Timed events, show starting at 9:00 am These horse shows are open to all 4-H and FFA members regardless of where they live and are provided as an opportunity for kids to practice their horsemanship skill and learn from each other.
