Seniors Steffond Brown, Bryce Douglas, Jason Foster, Robert Krauel, James Pinkney and Antwan Williams will all be honored before the Loggers game on Saturday against Whitman. Statistically Speaking With just two weeks left to go in the Northwest Conference season, the Loggers are tops in the NWC in scoring offense (87.8 ppg), scoring margin (+18.6), three-point field goal defense (.299), blocked shots (3.38 bpg), steals (11.57 spg), and three-point field goals made (8.90 3pg). Individually, Robert Krauel is second in the NWC in field goal percentage (.588) while Antwan Williams leads the conference in assists (5.43 apg) and steals (2.48 spg). Jason Foster leads the NWC in block shots with 1.86 bpg. In The Polls The Loggers remained steady at six in the D3hoops.com Top 25 this week. In the second NCAA West Region poll, the Loggers remained fourth in what is a very competitive region. Wis.-Stevens Point is first, followed by St. Thomas, Wis.-Platteville, Puget Sound, Wis.-Whitewater, Buena Vista, Whitworth and Bethel. Making History The eraser in the Logger men s basketball record book has been busy this season as the Loggers set a new school mark for consecutive wins last Saturday, winning their 14th straight game in a 100-79 win over George Fox. Scouting Whitworth The Pirates come to Tacoma on Friday with a record of 17-4 overall and 9-3 in NWC play. Winners of their last four games, Whitworth is currently in a tie with Lewis & Clark for second-place in the NWC standings at 9-3, three games behind the Loggers. David Riley leads the Bucs on offense, averaging 16.6 ppg. Calvin Jurich has played well on both ends of the floor, averaging 12.4 ppg and 7.9 rpg. Guard Ross Nakamura leads the NWC in minutes played at 36.0 mpg while putting up 96 assists and just 29 turnovers in 2008-09. Scouting Whitman The Missionaries head into the weekend with a record of 8-13 overall and 4-8 in NWC play. After winning just one of nine games, the Missionaries picked up a big win last Saturday, defeating Willamette, 88-84, in overtime. Chris Faidley leads the team with 21.0 ppg in 32.2 mpg. In the first half, the Eagles flew out to an early lead, holding a 15-point advantage midway through the period. The Loggers chipped away at the lead, which grew to as big as 18, cutting the EWU advantage to just nine points, 40-31, heading into the break. In the second half, both coaches let their teams run as the two squads combined for 85 points. Eastern Washington slowly grew their lead, eventually going up by as many as 26 with two minutes to go and the Eagles proved too much for UPS to counter as the Loggers fell 90-66. The Loggers were led by 10 points and eight rebounds from senior preseason All-American Jason Foster (Spanaway, Wash./ Henry Foss). Bryce Levin (Everett, Wash.) came off the bench to score nine points while Nadav Heyman (Corvallis, Ore.), Robert Krauel (Phoenix, Ariz./North Canyon) and Edric Egberuare (San Jose, Calif./Milpitas) each finished with seven points. Eastern Washington was led by the 21 points from Valentine, a transfer from Texas Tech. Mark Dunn added 12 points and 12 rebounds to collect the double-double while Jeff Christensen chipped in 10 points in the win. Recap - November 15, 2008 LOGGERS HOLD OFF SLUGS FOR 93-76 SEASON-OPENING WIN TACOMA, Wash. - Using their usual high-pressure full-court defense, the Puget Sound Loggers opened up the 2008-09 season with a win, defeating the visiting UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs in the second game of the Allstate Cantillana Men s Basketball Tip-Off Classic on Saturday night at Henry Foss High School in Tacoma, Wash. The Loggers went on a number of runs in the first half, taking a 15-point lead with just over five minutes left to go, but the Slugs kept fighting, closing to within two points, 39-37, at halftime. Guard Ryan Matsuoka carried the UCSC offense in the first half, putting up 18 of his final 29 points in the first 20 minutes. In the second half, the Loggers put 10 points on the board in the first 53 seconds, all from senior guard Antwan Williams (Portland, Ore./Madison) as they regained a comfortable lead. Santa Cruz continued to battle but they found themselves in foul trouble and the deep Puget Sound bench proved too much to handle as the Loggers collected the 93-76 win. Puget Sound was led by 27 points from senior Robert Krauel (Phoenix, Ariz./North Canyon). Williams finished with 16 on the night while Austin Boyce (Kent, Wash./Kentwood) put up 12. Jacob Moore added 14 while Daniel Bryan and Niel Brennan finished with 13 and 12 points respectively. UC Santa Cruz vs Puget Sound 11/15/08 8:00 pm PST at Tacoma, Wash. Recap - November 28, 2008 LOGGERS CHILL PENGUINS, 76-64 TURLOCK, Calif. - Attacking the boards with vengeance, the Puget Sound Loggers got a win over the Dominican (Calif.) Penguins, 76-64, in a non-conference men s basketball game on Friday evening at the County Bank Classic, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus, in Turlock, Calif. The Loggers (4-0) had a rough time warming up as they shot just 38.9% over the first ten minutes of the game but they forced nine Dominican turnovers to hold a 23-17 lead midway though the first period. Recap - November 29, 2008 LOGGERS SINK KEELHAULERS, 82-70 TURLOCK, Calif. - Using a 23-2 run to finish the game, the Puget Sound Loggers sunk the Cal Maritime Keelhaulers, 82-70, in a non-conference men s basketball game on Saturday at the County Bank Classic, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus, in Turlock, Calif. Using their familiar high-tempo offense, the Loggers raced out of the gate. A strong rebounding effort for the second straight night provided the Loggers with a number of offensive chances and early Cal Maritime fouls gave them chances at the free throw line.. The Keelhaulers were hot themselves, making seven of their first nine shots to hold an early lead. The two teams continued to battle through the remainder of the first half as Cal Maritime took a 39-37 lead into the halftime break. Senior forward Jason Foster (Spanaway, Wash./Henry Foss) led the way for Puget Sound in the first period, putting up 11 points while Robert Krauel (Phoenix, Ariz./North Canyon) cleaned up the glass, bringing down six boards. Cal Maritime opened up the lead with just under seven minutes remaining when James Ferguson hit a three-pointer that gave the Keelhaulers a nine-point lead. The Loggers fought back, retaking the lead with 4:19 remaining on a three-ball by senior Antwan Williams (Portland, Ore./Madison). The Loggers continued the run, which stretched to 16-0 before a Keelhauler timeout with 3:27 with Puget Sound holding a 75-68 lead. A dunk by Foster with 1:51 left pushed the run to 18-0 and the Logger lead to nine as the Keelhaulers had no other choice but to abandon ship as Puget Sound ended the run at 22-0 and eventually collected the 82-70 win. Puget Sound was led by Foster, who finished with 29 points on the night. Williams finished with 14 while Krauel led the team with eight rebounds. The Loggers brought down 34 rebounds on the night and recorded five blocks. Cal Martime was led by 21 points from Andrew Medeiros. John Stiles recorded the double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds while Andrew Johnson scored 12 in the loss. Puget Sound vs Cal Maritime 11/29/08 5:30 p.m. at Turlock, Calif.
