The Lady Demons will not play consecutive home or away games until playing three straight road games from Jan. 2-7. s most recent win against a Southeastern Conference team came against Ole Miss in the 1989 Long Beach State Dial Classic. NSU owns two wins against Texas A&M since then, but both came before the Aggies joined the SEC. Cheyenne Brown is the reigning Southland Conference and Louisiana Sports Writers Association Player of the Week, earning the first weekly honors by a Lady Demon this season. This is the first meeting between the teams since Nov. 23, 2014. Later that season, the teams played in the Waco, Texas, pod of the NCAA Touranment but did not meet each other. SCOUTING THE OPPONENT Arkansas is 1-0 against Southland Conference teams and 1-0 against teams from Louisiana this season. The Razorbacks opoened the season by beating Sam Houston State, 71-39, and followed that with a 92-46 win against ULM. Jessica Jackson s 16.1 points per game average leads Arkansas and ranks seventh in the SEC. Arkansas won its first nine games of the season before falling to Missouri State on Dec. 11. The Razorbacks will face one more SLC opponent -- Houston Baptist (Dec. 28) -- during the regular season. PROJECTED STARTING LINEUP (BASED ON PREVIOUS GAMES)! The teams first met during the 1980-81 season, a 73-62 victory. In the 11 meetings between the teams, neither team has collected a win as the visiting team. The Lady Demons lead the series 3-0 in Natchitoches while Arkansas is a perfect 10-0 against NSU in Fayetteville. Arkansas also won the lone neutral-site meeting between the teams, defeating NSU, 79-60, on Dec. 2, 2002, in Houston. NSU, ARKANSAS SHARE DIAMOND TIE In a roundabout way, Arkansas can thank for aiding in the success of the Razorbacks baseball program. Current Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn, who begins his 15th season as Arkansas skipper in 2017, is a former head coach (1995-97) who went 106-65 and won two Southland Conference titles with the Demons. Van Horn has led Arkansas to six College World Series apperances. MEMORABLE FIRST FOR DUPUY First-year head coach Jordan Dupuy prefers his teams to play up-tempo and to get off to a quick start. Dupuy's Lady Demons debut certainly followed both tenets. NSU defeated LeTourneau, 80-68, on Nov. 11, making Dupuy the fourth straight Lady Demons coach to emerge victorious in his or her first game. The way the Lady Demons won the game stood in contrast to how they operated in previous seasons. In the 2015-16 season, topped 80 points four times in 31 games. The Lady Demons' 78 field-goal attempts were five more than NSU attempted in any game this past season, and their 14 steals tied the 2015-16 season high. In the 2014-15 season, NSU managed to reach 80 points twice and never took more than 71 shots in a game. YOUTH, EXPERIENCE MESH ON LADY DEMONS' STAFF As Jordan Dupuy begins his first year as a collegiate head coach he brought with him a fully new coaching staff, one that ranks among the youngest in the nation. Between Dupuy, associate head coach Deneen Parker and assistants Erin Crane and Olivia Grayson, the coaching staff holds a combined age of 133. Research from Belmont University showed the youngest staff in Division I a season ago was Houston Baptist (118). NSU's total age of 133 would have ranked it around ninth nationally. TWO TWENTY PIECES PLEASE Beatrice Attura and Cheyenne Brown have each topped 20 points in a game three times this season - against LSU-Alexandria on Nov. 19, against ULM on Dec. 4 and against Jackson State on Dec. 11. NSU is 3-0 in those games. Prior to NSU's 97-76 win against LSUA, the most recent time two Lady Demons each crossed the 20-point plateau in a game was when Attura (26) and Janelle Perez (24) did so in a Southland Conference Tournament semifinal win against Lamar on March 14, 2015. Attura scored 24 points against LSUA while Brown added 20. Against ULM, Attura led the Lady Demons with 21 points while Brown matched her career high of 20.

After suffering a broken nose and a concussion in presseason workouts, Brown lost valuable practice time getting acquainted with first-year coach Jordan Dupuy's playing style. Brown did not start the first two games of the season, but produced 14 points and six rebounds in the Nov. 11 season opener against LeTourneau and followed that with a career-best 20 points and 10 rebounds against LSU-Alexandria, marking her second career double-double. She returned to the starting lineup against Central Baptist College. In her fifth game back in the starting lineup, Brown tied a career high with 20 points in NSU's 67-65 win against ULM on Dec. 4. BROWN HONORED BY LSWA, SOUTHLAND A career-best performance by Cheyenne Brown delivered the first weekly honors of the sophomore s career. Brown s 27-point, 12-rebound double-double in a Dec. 11 win against Jackson State earned her Player of the Week awards from both the Southland Conference and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. They were the first weekly awards of the season for a Lady Demon and the first since Janelle Perez swept the same honors on Feb. 15, 2016. ATTURA TAKES AIM AT 1,000 Playing alongside Janelle Perez and Keisha Lee for three seasons, senior guard Beatrice Attura enjoyed a first-hand look at two of 's 26 1,000-point scorers. If Attura comes anywhere close to matching her junior season, she will become the 27th member of that group. The Frisco Liberty High School product tallied a career-best 425 points a season ago, giving her 827 in three seasons in a uniform. Attura enters today's game 21 points shy of 1,000. Should she continue to score at her current average of 19.0 points per game, she would enter the 1,000-point club during 's game against Louisiana College on Dec. 20. If Attura scores at her current career average of 9.3 points per game, she would cross the plateau at Mississippi State on Dec. 28. MILLER TAKES VALLEY TO BOARDING SCHOOL Freshman Victoria Miller took advantage of foul trouble to turn in one of the best rebounding performances by a Lady Demon in recent history. Miller grabbed 16 rebounds - seven offensive - in 23 minutes during 's 68-64 loss to Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 25. The total marked the most rebounds by a Lady Demon since Trudy Armstead grabbed 18 against Central Arkansas on Feb. 1, 2012. Miller's mark put her four away from becoming the first NSU freshman to tally a 20-rebound game since Lillie Scott notched 20 against UL Monroe on Feb. 7, 1977. NATCHITOCHES It seems simplistic and crosses a small sample size but when Beatrice Attura and Cheyenne Brown each score at least 20 points in a game, the women s basketball team fares well. The guard-post duo each collected at least 20 points in the same game for the third time this season Sunday, and for the third time in those three games, the Lady Demons collected a victory, notching an 83-65 victory against Jackson State inside Prather Coliseum. I just knew it was going to be a very physical game down low, because they have big girls and we have big girls, said Brown, who tallied her second double-double this season with a career-high 27 points and a career-high-tying 12 rebounds. From high school, I want to establish myself in the paint. I did that with the help of my teammates. When we play together as a team, good things happen. Good may have been an understatement for the way NSU (5-3) started Sunday s game. Playing for the first time in seven days, the Lady Demons built a 15-point lead less than nine minutes into the game when freshman Gabby Bell swished a straight-ahead 3-pointer off an Attura feed. The Lady Demons were in control, limiting the Lady Tigers (3-3) to 20-percent shooting in the first quarter. The roles reversed in the second quarter with Jackson State erasing the 15-point deficit and taking its lone lead of the game when Derica Wiggins knocked down her third 3-pointer of the half to give the Lady Tigers a 31-29 lead with 2:45 to play. Thanks to Brown s 21 first-half points, which included the final 10 Lady Demons points of the half, NSU held a slim 37-35 lead at the break. The teams traded buckets early in the second half with Jackson State pulling even for the fourth time on Sumer Williams jumper with 7:59 to play in the third quarter. Jackson State took its final lead of the game on Chelsea Causey s jumper with 4:13 to play in the fourth quarter. From there, NSU limited Jackson State to 6-for-27 shooting from the field across the final 14-plus minutes of the game. The key was defense, and the key is playing defense and getting out and running in every game we play, said first-year coach Jordan Dupuy, whose team outscored Jackson State 12-8 in fast-break points. Unfortunately, it was a reflection of how we ve been practicing. We ve had some up-and-down practices. We switched up what we do in the second half. We played our pack defense and had good help-side (defense). We made them score over the top, and we rebounded and got out and ran and got easy buckets. That s the key to our success in every victory. While Brown did most of her heavy lifting in the first half, Attura was more balanced, scoring 14 of her 26 points after halftime while tying a career high with eight assists. Attura assisted on Tia Youngblood s tie-breaking basket with 3:33 to play before hitting a 3-pointer to stretch NSU s lead to five. Sparked by that mini surge, NSU finished the third quarter on a 12-3 run and Jackson State never got closer than eight points the rest of the way. A lot of my assists were in transition, Attura said. That s something coach (Dupuy) stresses, getting out and running and pushing the ball to get easy baskets in transition. Our posts are usually waiting for the ball. They are just able to finish. Shahd Abboud added 12 points and eight rebounds as NSU outrebounded Jackson State 50-39. Eleven of Abboud s points and six of her rebounds came in the second half. Kierra Adams paced Jackson State with 17 points while Wiggins added 10, only one of which came in the second half. We had a philosophy of score easy or score late, Dupuy said. What I mean by that is we either were going to score in transition, or we were going to make them defend. They got a little confused in our motion, and we found open people. It all starts with doing your work early, and Cheyenne s done a really good job of doing that. She s creating angles to the backboard, finishing around the basket and hitting the offensive boards. Those are all keys to success. Two Games Ago... NATCHITOCHES Some strong early work in the post made it possible for the women s basketball team to end its three-game slide from the outside Sunday afternoon. Senior guard Beatrice Attura connected on a go-ahead 3-pointer with 21.9 seconds to play, helping the Lady Demons erase a late four-point deficit and edge state rival UL Monroe, 67-65, inside Prather Coliseum. We were trying to run a play we normally run for our posts off a ball screen, said Attura, who led (4-3) with 21 points. When that play broke down, I was sitting in the corner, and Shahd (Abboud) pulled the defense to her. I was sitting over there hoping the ball would come to me, because I knew I was open when the defense collapsed. Attura s left-wing 3 off Abboud s feed capped a wild fourth quarter in which the Lady Demons built their largest lead of the game a 10-point advantage with 7:41 to play only to surrender it to an 11-0 ULM (2-5) run in the next 2:59. The Warhawks pushed the run to 14-0 when Gabriella Cortez (11 points) hit a 3-pointer with 2:16 to play. Attura answered 25 seconds later with her second 3 of the game to slice the lead back to one. A pair of Attura free throws gave NSU a lead with 49 seconds left before Carissa Moody answered with a layup that put ULM ahead 65-64 with 33 seconds to play. After Attura s final 3-pointer, ULM used a timeout to advance the ball and Andreanna Jackson, who tallied a game-high 25 points, missed a short jumper before Cheyenne Brown corralled the rebound, allowing NSU to snap its three-game skid. (We told them) just stay the course, first-year head coach Jordan Dupuy said. We ve tried to create that same situation in practice. Like I told them in the locker room, it s huge. It shows a lot of maturity to not only withstand that, but to come back and make sure we finish on top. Bea hit two incredible 3 balls toward the end. I didn t call any timeouts toward the end. Our rhythm was good. There was a set that was working all game. I felt we would get the shot we needed. Beatrice got it. It s always going to come down to a defensive stop. While Attura and Jackson worked the perimeter and sliced to the basket to lead their respective teams in scoring, NSU overcame ULM s size advantage to score a 28-22 advantage in points in the paint thanks in large part to the sophomore tandem of Brown (20 points) and Libba Gilliam (career-high 11 points, career-high tying eight rebounds). Brown and Gilliam several times executed high-low entry passes that one or the other finished with layups. Gilliam set up Brown s three-point play that lifted NSU to its first 10-point advantage with 7:41 to play.

ATTURA EARNS PRESEASON HONOR After capturing the Southland Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player award as a sophomore, Beatrice Attura used that momentum to turn in a career-best season as a junior in 2015-16. Attura was second on the Lady Demons in scoring a season ago, averaging a career-best 13.7 points per game. For her efforts, she was named second-team Preseason All-Southland Conference. Attura was NSU s only representative on either the first or second team. BEA CROSSES THE CENTURY MARK When senior guard Beatrice Attura hits a 3-pointer at home, public address announcer Hunter Horton punctuates the moment with the call of "Bea... for three!" When Attura connected on a 3-pointer with 4:08 to play in the first quarter of NSU's 93-42 win against Central Baptist on Nov. 21, it gave her 100 for her career. Attura currently has 117 career 3s, putting her within one of tying former teammate Chelsea Rogers for 10th on the Lady Demons' career list. Attura played with three of NSU's all-time top-10 3-point shooters - Rogers, Keisha Lee (9th, 127) and Janelle Perez (1st, 223). GILLIAM GETS THE STARTING CALL FOR THE FIRST TIME Sophomore forward Libba Gilliam appeared in 20 games, all as a reserve, in her first season in Natchitoches. With a strong preseason performance, Gilliam found herself in the starting lineup in the 2016-17 season opener against LeTourneau on Nov. 11, and she responded well to her new role. Despite playing 13 minutes because of foul trouble, Gilliam scored a career-best six points and grabbed a career-high six rebounds. DEBUT DAYS FOR FRESHMAN QUINTET 's roster is composed of seven returners and five newcomers, all five of which are freshmen. All five made their college debuts in 's 80-68 season-opening win against LeTourneau. Point guard Gabby Bell led the freshman class with seven points while swiping five steals and handing out four assists in 16 minutes. Forward/center Victoria Miller added five points and blocked a shot while forward Jocelyn Scott added four points. Guard Nia Randall and forward Jasmyn Johnson also made their first appearances in a Lady Demons uniform. Both Johnson and Randall scored their first career points during NSU's win against Central Baptist on Nov. 21. Randall earned the assist on Johnson's first bucket, a fast-break layup. It also was the first assist of Randall's career. Miller and Scott became the first members of NSU's 2016 signing class to draw starts as each were on the floor to begin NSU's Nov. 30 matchup at Memphis. ATTURA COULD MAKE MORE PROGRAM HISTORY As 's lone four-year senior, Beatrice Attura has enjoyed being part of one of the longest extended runs of success for the Lady Demons, reaching the national postseason in all three of her seasons. Should the Lady Demons play beyond the Southland Conference Tournament in March, Attura would become the first NSU player to play in four straight national postseason events. She would join former teammates Presley Owens, Chelsea Rogers and Meghan Cross as Lady Demons who reached the postseason each year they were in uniform. Owens and Rogers reached the NCAA Tournament in each of their two seasons while Cross was part of an NCAA Tournament team and a WBI squad. PLENTY OF FACES SEE PLENTY OF TIME A season ago, eight Lady Demons averaged more than 10 minutes per game, accounting for 61.5 percent of the roster. Through five games, nine players are averaging double-figure minutes, topped by Beatrice Attura's 31.8 minutes per game. All 12 players saw at least 10 minutes of playing time in a single game through the first four games of the year. POINTS APLENTY IN THE EARLY GOING 's new up-tempo style has shown on the scoreboard. Through three games, the Lady Demons did not score less than 80 points and crossed the 90-point mark twice. The three straight games of 80-plus points marked the first such run for the Lady Demons since scoring at least 80 points in five staight games from Jan. 22-Feb. 10, 2005. LADY DEMONS THE LAST TO FALL 's season-opening, three-game win streak ended Nov. 23 at No. 14 Texas, making the Lady Demons the final Southland Conference women's basketball team to suffer a loss in the 2016-17 season It marked the first loss for head coach Jordan Dupuy, who became the third NSU head coach to start his career 3-0, joining Mary Jane Mayfield (1974-75) and James Smith (1987-88).
