Board Meeting Bulldog The next Board Meeting takes place on Tuesday February 20, 2018 at 6:30pm in our Board Room. Culver School 2-12-18 Bulletin School Happenings Mrs. Peggie Maniscalco Principal PARCC Preparation is Happening in Grades 3-8! If your Child has been telling you that part of the day has been spent on PARCC Testing preparation...don t be confused! For our students in third through eighth grade, teachers have been working with them to help them to understand what the PARCC test is (a measure of Academic Performance in Math and Reading). This rigorous assessment is given on their technology device (chromebook), over 6-8 days depending on the grade level. The teachers are helping our students to understand the test components. The questions are developed to assess students on the Illinois Common Core Standards which is what each grade level has aligned their curriculum. In order to prepare students for the types of questions they will see on the test, teachers have been doing some practice work that aligns with what they are teaching in their classroom. As we get closer to our March 13th start date we encourage you to work hand in hand with your child and the school to give your child the best opportunity to achieve. Please encourage your child get plenty of rest, get a good breakfast before coming to school and participate in regular daily activity. For information on the test and parent resources go to our website. http://www.niles71.org/parents/parcc-for-parents

Kathy Morrissey School Nurse February is Children s Dental Health Month Good oral health and hygiene is directly linked to overall physical wellness. It also reduces the risk of serious illness and disease. Teaching children at a young age to care for their teeth and gums can provide a huge long term health benefit. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists, On average, students miss more than 51 million school hours each year because of dental problems or related conditions. To avoid your kids missing school, make sure that they brush and floss regularly and visit their dentist every six months for a check-up. Visiting the dentist regularly can help prevent cavities and reinforce good dental hygiene practices. Please visit The Mouth Monsters for more information about oral health for children at, http://mouthmonsters.mychildrensteeth.org/tips-forparents/. Please be aware that children in kindergarten, second grade and sixth grade must submit to school the Proof of School Dental Examination by May 15, 2018. If you have not already submitted to school the Proof of School Dental Exam, please schedule your examinations and submit to school the required form as soon as possible. Proof of Dental Examination forms may be obtained from the school office and from the school website. February is American Heart Month According to the American Heart Association (AHA), High blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity, physical inactivity and smoking have always been adult topics. But many children have the same risk factors as their parents. Preventing heart related disease should begin at a young age. Teaching children to make healthy life choices early on is key to preventing heart related illnesses. The AHA states that these seven factors are important to staying healthy: 1. Avoid smoking and using tobacco products. 2. Be physically active every day. 3. Eat a heart-healthy diet. 4. Keep a healthy weight. 5. Keep your blood pressure healthy. 6. Keep your total cholesterol healthy. 7. Keep your blood sugar healthy. You can learn more about the 7 Simple Ways to Live Better at: http://www.heart.org/idc/groups/heart-public/@wcm/@fc/documents/downloadable/ ucm_461359.pdf At school we appreciate your support in helping advocate good decision making skills and promoting healthy lifestyle choices. If you suspect your child has a health problem please consult with your healthcare provider.

The varsity girls' basketball team celebrated their fun season with a pizza party in Mrs. Mueller's room. The girls worked hard throughout the season and developed good friendships with one another! Again, congratulations to the varsity girls' basketball team!

On January 17th, the Culver Chorus attended Choir Day at Niles West High School. This was an after school field trip. We had a great day and concert! Together with area middle schools and the high school choirs, we had a full group warm up directed by Mr. Hunter, Choir Director at Niles West. Next, we learned the song Freedom. It was a blast adding choreography, rapping and harmony parts to the piece. Next, we were treated to a pizza dinner, had time to mingle and learned about the opportunities available at the high school level. The evening ended with a concert. The a cappella groups were amazing! The junior high choirs sang a piece too that was learned with our own choir directors at our respective schools. Thank you District 71 School Board and Administration for providing us with everything necessary to be a part of this fun, educational and inspiring day!

The Niles 71 website now features a resources page! As we teach our children to ask for help when they need it, we also encourage families to ask for help when they need it. To support our mission of developing the whole child, Niles 71 is providing a list of resources for parents to access as needed. On this page we are highlighting community resources that may be useful to our families. Included in this list of resources are: Basic Needs Financial Mental health Language Health Multi-needs resources If you have any questions about these resources or need additional resource information please contact: Kathy Morrissey, School Nurse, Linda Kraus, School Social Worker, or Liz Lawrence, School Psychologist. These links are being provided as a convenience and for informational purposes only; they do not constitute an endorsement or an approval by Niles Elementary District 71.

Partnering with the PTA Box Tops and Campbell Soup Labels Every year PTA collects Box Tops and Campbell s Soup Labels. Last year we raised money for Culver School on those tiny icons on many of your favorite foods. At home, clip the Box Tops and Campbell s Soup Labels. Please send them to school with your child and we will take care of the rest. Did you know that Goldfish Crackers are part of the Campbell s Soup Label family? Next time before you put that package in the trash or recycling bin, check to see if it has a Box Top or Campbell Soup Label on it. Those points add up to FREE $$$ for our school.

Please do not park in the Library Parking Spots in the West Lot. These reserved parking spots are paid for by the Library and should not be parked in. Thank you for being respectful and not parking in these spots.
