RT3 CAP NAILER OWNER S MANUAL Operation Safety Maintenance Warranty! www.stingerworld.com PLEASE READ! This manual contains important information about product safety. REV 09/14

WELCOME TO STINGER Congratulations on purchasing the STINGER. You have selected a brand and a tool that you can count on to deliver best practice installation, and perform job after job. This document serves as an addendum to the Hitachi NV50A1 Instruction Manual included with this product. Please take the time to read and understand the information contained in the NV50A1 Instruction Manual and STINGER RT3 Owner s Manual before operating or maintaining the STINGER. The RT3 is intended for securing base sheet to wood decks only. Improper use of the RT3 could result in serious injury or even death. Most accidents occur because of the failure to observe basic safety rules and precautions, which are outlined in the Important Information section of this manual. TABLE OF CONTENTS Important Information 2 Tool Specifications 4 Tool Assembly 5 Loading the Tool 6 Operating the Tool 7 STINGER RT3 Schematic 10 Repair, Maintenance & Storage 12 Warranty 13 Troubleshooting 14 The Hitachi NV50A1 Instruction Manual and STINGER RT3 Owner s Manual should be available to anyone who plans to operate the RT3. Manufactured by National Nail Corp.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION! PERSONAL SAFETY ITEMS Do not use tool prior to reading the Owner s Manual. Keep this manual available for future reference. Always wear eye protection that conforms to ANSI requirements (Z87.1) and provides protection against flying particles both from the front and side. Eye protection should be worn by the operator and by others in the work area. Eye protection is required to protect against flying fasteners and debris that could possibly cause severe eye injury. The employer is responsible to enforce the use of eye protection equipment by the tool operator and all other personnel in the work area. To prevent accidental injuries: Handle the tool with care Always assume that the tool contains fasteners Always disconnect the air hose from the STINGER RT3 when: loading nails and/or caps performing inspection, maintenance or repair clearing a nail or collated cap jam the tool is not in use leaving the work area moving the STINGER RT3 to another work location handing the STINGER RT3 to another person storing the tool Never point the tool toward yourself or anyone else Never engage in horseplay Never hold or carry the tool with a finger on the actuator button. Never place a hand or any other part of the body in the fastener discharge area of the tool while the air supply is connected 2

IMPORTANT INFORMATION! AIR SUPPLY AND CONNECTIONS Use only clean, regulated compressed air as a power source for this tool. Do not use bottle gases, combustible gases or oxygen as a power source for the tool as the tool may explode. Do not use air supply pressures that exceed 120 PSI (8.28 bar or 8.4 kg/mm). Exceeding the recommended maximum operating air pressure will greatly increase tool wear. The air supply must be capable of maintaining the operating air pressure of the tool. Pressure drops in the air supply can reduce the tool s driving power. Use a pressure regulator and gauge to allow visual inspection of the air pressure being delivered to the tool. Use air hoses that have rated pressures of up to 150% of the maximum pressure that can be generated by the power source. The supply hose should contain 3/8 fittings that will provide quick disconnecting from the male plug on the tool. Use quick connect fittings that allow the tool to be unhooked from the air supply quickly and easily. Do not use fittings that will not allow the tool to exhaust when the air supply is disconnected. OPERATION OF THE TOOL Never inspect, maintain, repair, adjust, clear a jam or store the tool with the air connected. Never use the tool in proximity of flammable gases or liquids, as some tools will create sparks that can be an ignition source for a fire or explosion. Always inspect the safety device for damage and proper operation prior to operation. Never assume the tool is empty of fasteners. Never point the tool toward yourself or any other persons. Never cycle the tool unless it is in contact with the work-piece. Never use the tool as a hammer or wedging device or drop to the floor from any height. Always remove your finger from the actuator button when pausing from cycling. Never tamper with the safety device or use the tool if the safety device is not functioning properly. Use only 1 ¼ STINGER RT NailPac steel cap fasteners with the STINGER. Never use any fasteners that are not specified for use in this tool. The RT3 holds 1 reel of steel caps (1500 caps) and 1 coil of collated nails (1500 nails). 3

TOOL SPECIFICATIONS Operating pressure 95-120 psi Weight 62 lb. (with caps and nails) Nail capacity 1,500 nails (1 coil) Cap capacity 1,500 steel caps (1 reel) Air consumption.035 ft 3 /cycle at 100 psi Example: (.99 ltr/cycle at 6.9 bar) 500 shots/minute requires 17.5 ft 3 / min (.99 ltr/cycle at 7 kgf/cm 2 ) (17.5 cfm at 100 psi) Air inlet 3/8 NPT Fasteners STINGER RT NailPac (National Nail product number 0136072) Consists of 2 coils of 1-1/4 electro-galvanized ring shank nails (1,500 nails per roll) and 2 reels of 1 diameter steel caps (1,500 caps per reel). Lubrication For optimal performance, clean and lubricate cap feed moving parts and feed path before each day of use with a dry silicone lubricant. Use air line lubricators. If lubricators are not available, add 2 drops of non-detergent 20-weight oil daily into the air inlet of the tool. 4

TOOL ASSEMBLY The STINGER RT3 is shipped with the handle assembly temporarily attached to the main unit. This lowers the profile for shipping, and protects the air prep unit from shipping-related damages. 1. Remove handle assembly shipping screws and extend the handle. 2. Tighten handle assembly bolts. 3. Attach the black air supply line from air prep unit to nailer and tighten compression fitting. 5

LOADING THE TOOL USE 1-1/4 STINGER RT NAILPAC CAP NAILS ONLY Disconnect the STINGER RT3 from air supply when loading caps and nails. 1. Open Nail Gate. Place coil nails on Feeder Paws. Close Nail Gate. 2. Remove Lynch Pin from Cap Reel Spindle. 3. Hold down Tension Arm and slide cap reel onto spindle. 4. Replace Lynch Pin. 5. Unroll a 12 section of caps. Place them over the Magnetic Front Roller (caps must be positioned tape side down) and then onto the Cap Feed Platform. 6. Manually advance the caps underneath the Cap Feeder Piston to directly in back of the Cap Picker. 7. Lift the Cap Picker. Pull it back and set down on the caps. 8. Advance the caps until the first cap is in the nailing position. 6

OPERATING THE TOOL OPERATING THE TOOL 1. Do not use tool prior to reading the STINGER RT3 Owner s Manual. 2. Read warning label(s) on the tool. 3. Visually inspect the tool for worn or damaged parts. 4. Wear appropriate eye and ear protection. 5. Install a male pneumatic fitting into the End Cap of the tool, ensuring that the fitting allows the tool to exhaust any air in the tool when the air hose is disconnected. 6. For optimal performance, clean and lubricate cap feed moving parts and feed path before each day of use with a dry silicone lubricant. Use air line lubricators. If lubricators are not available, add 2 drops of non-detergent 20-weight oil daily into the air inlet of the tool. 7. Connect the air hose to the tool using a quick connect fitting, and check the air pressure reading on the regulator to ensure it does not exceed 120 PSI. Check the tool for any air leaks. 8. Disconnect the air hose from the tool when: Loading nails and/or caps Performing inspection, maintenance or repair Clearing a nail or collated cap jam The tool is not in use Leaving the work area Moving the tool to another work location Storing the tool 7

OPERATING THE TOOL Air Prep Unit (3/8 NPT male plug not included) 9. The STINGER RT3 Air Preparation Unit includes an Oil Mist Lubricator for automatic nailer oiling and a Filter Regulator to assist in supply air moisture separation. Recommended pressure setting on the Air Preparation Unit is 95-120 psi. The Oil Mist Lubricator is adjusted at the factory to supply approximately one drop of oil for each fifty nails driven. A screw located at the top of the Oil Mist Lubricator allows for automatic nailer oiling adjustments. Turn clockwise to decrease, and counter clockwise to increase. Unscrew the Oil Mist Lubricator site glass to fill with non-detergent pneumatic tool lubricant. The Filter Regulator site glass can be unscrewed or the button on the bottom can be pushed to empty condensation. Oil Mist Lubricator Filter Regulator 10. To adjust the depth of penetration, regulate the air pressure at the regulator and cycle the tool on a scrap work piece to evaluate the adjustment. 11. Following recommended loading instructions, load the fasteners approved for use in the tool. 12. Cycle the tool on a scrap work piece to evaluate the depth of penetration by the fastener into the work piece. 13. Repeat Step 10 as needed to set the correct depth, using the minimum amount of air pressure to drive the fastener. 8

OPERATING THE TOOL The STINGER RT3 is a forward operating tool. Reverse movement may cause caps to jam or fold under Cap Feed Platform. Connecting the air supply. Air supply hose should be fed through one of the square hose holders on the operator s preferred side of the handle assembly. The STINGER RT3 can be operated in one of two modes. Manual or Automatic. Manual Automatic For manual operation, place the Auto/Manual Toggle Switch in the Manual position. In this setting, the push button actuator located in the center of the handle must be depressed each time a cap fastener is required. Note: All tools are factory preset for 9 18 nailing patterns. Do not adjust 9 wheel (Image A). For automatic firing and fastener spacing, place the Auto/Manual Toggle Switch in the Auto position. Using the Fastener Spacing Toggle Switch, select the desired nailing pattern. Depress and hold the Push Button Actuator located in the center of the handle while advancing across the work surface. A cap fastener will be placed every 9 or 18 as determined by the toggle switch selection. Changing to 9 6 Nailing Option When 6" spacing is required, all three Wheel Actuators (Image B) must be engaged. This is done by turning the additional two actuators located on the wheel. Loosen the Jam Nut (Image D2). Turn the 5/16" Actuator Bolts in slightly (turning Actuator Bolts too far will cause damage to Actuator Ball Switches). Rotate the wheel slowly to ensure that Actuator Bolts are only making contact with the ball portion of the switch and not the switch casing. Tighten the Jam Nuts. The STINGER RT3 is now set to nail 9"-6" patterns. Preset Wheel Actuators A 9 Wheel Adjustable Wheel Actuators B 6-18 Wheel 9
