FROM THE DESK OF Chris Carter, Head of School October 19, 2018 Dear Parents, I want to thank those of you who have so quickly shown your support for St. Mark s by pledging to the Annual Fund. Your generosity is so important and makes such a tremendous difference. I know you just received pledge cards last week, and we appreciate these very prompt responses! the survey, the group engaged in small group activities to envision the desired future of St. Mark s and to determine where the school needs to focus its attention in order to accomplish that future. The Board will now take those focus areas and establish specific goals for the next three-year period. We hope to have our plan completed by the end of the semester and will share it with the broader community after final approval. I also want to thank you all for your amazing generosity to our surprise birthday gift for Mr. Calvin. We will have a Pep Rally/Surprise Birthday Assembly in the gym on Monday at 2:30. We would love to have you there; I think he will be absolutely shocked and thrilled by the present you have given him! Remember it s a surprise! Two weeks ago a large group of current and former School Board members spent much of the day on the beginning of a new strategic plan for the school. Fr. David Madison from SAES led the session, and he began by reviewing national and regional trends in Episcopal schools. He then reviewed data from the survey that SAES sent about a month ago. We were delighted to have over 250 responses from current and former parents, as well as parishioners and faculty/ staff. Every grade in the school was represented by the respondents. Fr. Madison told us that the overall favorability rating of the school from those who responded was 8.4 on a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high). The survey gave the Board a sense of perceived current strengths upon which to continue to build, as well as concerns to be addressed in the next few years. Having looked at national/regional trends and local data in Next week is our Fall Open House. A huge thank you to all who have given us names and addresses for over fifty personal invitations! We can still send an email or make a phone call if you forgot to send us a name, and of course you are welcome to bring someone on your own! We will have both morning and sessions next Thursday; all ages and grades are welcome, but we will gather and begin tours in the Little School. 1st-8th grade students will bring home report cards today. Overall, I am very proud of our students efforts in the first quarter but please do not hesitate to contact your child s teachers or division head if you have any questions or concerns. Conferences can be scheduled anytime they are necessary. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend! Warmly, Chris Carter, D.Min. Head of School 2
