HOUSTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT Essential Functions and Physical Demands Analysis Job Details Job Title: Glazier Job Code: 000738 Date of Analysis: 11/10/04 Department: Facilities Management and Operations Job Analyst: Ben Haynes, OTD, OTR Summary of Essential Functions The Glazier with Houston Independent School District is required to perform the following essential functions during the course of a normal workday: 1. Required to receive work orders for glass repair in schools and administrative buildings in the HISD. 2. Responsible for completing work orders. Product /Workplace Descriptions The work of a Glazier with Houston Independent School District is performed in a school district involved primarily in the education of school-aged children and students grades Kindergarten through twelfth grade. The specific department in which the duties are performed is the Facilities Management and Operations department. The worker is required to replace glass and associated materials in schools and administrative buildings owned and operated by the HISD. It should be noted that this worker must be very careful when lifting and manipulating pieces of glass. Glass pieces often have sharp edges and corners which pose a significant cut hazard. The worker is required to safely transport glass and associated materials when completing work orders. Significant Weights The heaviest weight lifted by a Glazier is a solid core wood door that is usually lifted with hand placement ranging between waist and chest height when performing the job. The frequency of lifting over the course of a normal workday would be classified as occasional. It is also important to understand that the heavier weights are lifted only on an occasional basis and that weights lifted at greater frequencies are lighter in nature. NOTE: Glass is generally lifted utilizing neutral forearm rotation with palmar pinch. The glass is also lifted utilizing suction cups with a handle component that is attached to the glass (affording the employee to choose grip pattern). The weight of a piece of framed glass (used in doors) is 6.3 pounds. This was described to be an average size piece of glass used in a door. These pieces cannot exceed 100 square inches per Fire Marshall codes. This piece of glass is lifted between floor and 60 inches above the ground (hand placement usually waist to over shoulder) on a frequent basis. The weight of a 32 inch by 34 inch piece of mirrored glass is 22.5 pounds. This glass can be lifted from floor to over the shoulder level (hand placement usually waist to over shoulder). The piece of glass was described to be a good representation of what may be used in a side light of a door. The weight of a 68" X 28" piece of tempered glass (representative of a side light piece of glass used in a trophy case) is 38.4 pounds. This piece of glass is lifted between floor and over shoulder levels (hand placement usually waist to over shoulder). The weight of a 48" X 96" piece of lexan (polycarbonate glass) is 41.1 pounds. This material is generally lifted from floor to over shoulder (hand placement usually waist to over shoulder) when installing in entryways or door units in cafeterias. The weight of a 60" X 84" piece of lexan (polycarbonate glass) is 51.0 pounds. This material is generally lifted from floor to over head (hand placement usually waist to over head) when installing in entryways or door units in cafeterias. This is unbreakable glass that is placed in schools or buildings where windows are broken frequently. The weight of a 36" X 80" solid core wood door is 90.6 pounds. These doors can be lifted from floor to chest level (hand placement generally waist to chest level) to place the door on a saw horse or work bench to cut out a hole for glass. These doors are generally lifted with bilateral neutral grip. Work Environment The work of a Glazier with Houston Independent School District is performed indoors and outdoors in a school system environment. The worker is required to wear a uniform consistent with the nature of the work.
