Senior forward Rose Tynan garnered Co-Offensive Player of the Week laurels Tuesday following a seven-point performance in a pair of contests against top-six opponents. Tynan racked up three goals in contests against No. 5 Penn State and No. 6 Princeton to enter the week leading the team with six tallies on the year. Tynan owns 80 career points in 63 contests. 2018 Player of the Week Honors Sept. 11 ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week - Rose Tynan Sept. 4 ACC Offensive Player of the Week - Olivia Sahaydak Aug. 28 ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week - Jillian Wolgemuth DEFENSE SHINES AGAINST NITTANY LIONS Duke s defense held then-no. 5 Penn State to a single tally inside the first 20 minutes of Sunday s 4-1 neutral site victory. The defensive unit limited a Penn State front line that entered the weekend averaging over 20 shots a game to just 11 looks. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Sammi Steele anchored the performance with three saves. DUKE FACES ORANGE IN ACC OPENER After going 4-2 in six non-conference contests to open the season, the Blue Devils kick off league play Friday night at Syracuse. The Duke program is 52-110-2 all-time in regular season ACC contests and went 4-2 against league foes last year. IN THE STATISTICAL LANDSCAPE The Blue Devils enter their ACC opener ranked among the conference leaders in several statistical categories. The squad is second in the league in goals per game (3.50), assists per game (2.67), points per game (9.67), penalty corners per game (6.17) and scoring margin (1.66). Duke is seventh nationally in goals per game. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Sammi Steele ranks second in the ACC in shutouts per game (0.33). In addition to ranking among the conference leaders in scoring, senior forward Rose Tynan eighth nationally in points per game and ninth in goals per game. CHALLENGING SLATE CONTINUES Duke s schedule gets no easier this weekend, featuring a matchup with the country s 12th-ranked team in Syracuse. The Blue Devils have faced six consecutive ranked opponents to start the season, including two top-five teams. Duke was ranked third in the latest Division I Strength of Schedule ratings on FieldHockeyCorner.com behind only Virginia and Princeton. The program is 38-17 against ranked foes since 2015. SYRACUSE SERIES HISTORY Duke heads to Syracuse, N.Y., seeking its first win in the series with the Orange. Syracuse has claimed each of the past five meetings since joining the ACC in 2013. A late goal by the Orange was the difference in last year s Oct. 7 regular season meeting at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium, as the Blue Devils fell by a 2-1 score. Duke jumped out to an early advantage behind a tally by Rose Tynan and received eight saves from goalkeeper Sammi Steele in a 3 defensive battle with Syracuse. The Orange surrendered losses to then-no. 1 UConn and No. 8 Virginia last weekend to sit at 3-2. Syracuse entered the week ranked among the nation s top 20 teams in goals against average (16th, 1.31) behind the play of goalkeeper Borg van der Velde, who is third in the ACC in save percentage (.750). Chiara Gutsche paces the Orange attack with three goals while Laura Graziosi has five points on two goals and an assist. BUSTIN HITS CENTURY MARK AT DUKE Duke s Aug. 26 4-3 overtime victory against Liberty marked a milestone for head coach Pam Bustin, who recorded her 100th win at Duke with the result. Bustin owns an impressive ledger of 102-50 in her eighth season at the helm of the Duke program. She is 264-178 overall for her career, ranking her 12th among all active Division I head field hockey coaches. Bustin is just the third head coach in program history to reach the 100-win milestone, joining current Duke administrator Jacki Silar and Beth Bozman. Over the past seven seasons, Bustin has directed the Blue Devils to six NCAA Tournament appearances, including two trips to the national semifinals and a berth in the 2013 title game. PAIR OF FORMER BLUE DEVILS RETIRE FROM TEAM USA Early September saw two former Blue Devil standouts announce their retirement from the U.S. senior national team following this summer s trip to the Vitality Women s Hockey World Cup. 2016 Duke graduate Lauren Blazing retired from the squad after spending four years representing Team USA at the highest level. A goalkeeper from, Blazing recorded 11 international caps with the U.S. national team since first being named to the roster in 2014. 2012 Duke graduate and longtime U.S. defender Stefanie Fee wrapped up her career with 114 international caps in six years of action. She was a part of several medalist performances and a fifth-place finish at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. PAOLINO, TYNAN TABBED PRESEASON ALL-ACC Senior forward Rose Tynan and junior midfielder/forward Margaux Paolino garnered Preseason All-ACC recognition, while Duke was picked to finish second in the ACC. PAM BUSTIN HEAD COACH EIGHTH SEASON AT DUKE UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS, 1990 A two-time ACC and NFHCA South Region Coach of the Year and a member of the USA Field Hockey Hall of Fame, Pam Bustin has revitalized the Duke field hockey program in her seven seasons in Durham, guiding the Blue Devils to a 102-50 ledger and a trip to the 2013 NCAA title game. Under Bustin s direction, the Blue Devils made their 16th NCAA Tournament appearance in 2017, reaching the quarterfinal round for the fifth consecutive year. The squad rounded out the season at 17-4 and featured a trio of All-Americans in Alyssa Chillano, Margaux Paolino and Rose Tynan. Duke also led the ACC in all-conference and all-academic team selections for the 2017 campaign. Bustin earned the 250th win of her career in a 3-0 shutout of Old Dominion Sept. 24, becoming the 14th active Division I head field hockey coach to reach the milestone. In seven years, Bustin has overseen 18 All-America selections, 38 All-South Region picks and 25 All-ACC honorees. During her tenure, the team has also excelled off the field with 36 selections to the All-ACC Academic team. The squad has been recognized at a national level, earning Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team distinction three times after compiling a collective team grade point average that ranks among the best in the country. Individually, 32 Blue Devils have been named to the Division I National Academic Squad, with four student-athletes receiving Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I Scholars of Distinction accolades and Lauren Blazing winning the Elite 90 Award in 2015. In addition to her collegiate coaching duties, Bustin has served as an assistant coach with the United States National Under-19 and Under-21 teams, working regularly to develop the nation s junior players. She was previously an assistant for the U.S. National Team, helping the United States to an eighth place finish at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Bustin guided the United States to the country s first Olympic berth since 1996 as the team went 6-0 at the Kazan Olympic Qualifier in 2008. Bustin is a U.S. Field Hockey accredited Level III coach and instructs coaching courses throughout the country as well. Prior to coaching at the Olympic level, Bustin served as team captain on the United States Under-21 team from 1987-89, competing in the 1986, 1987, 1989 and 1990 U.S. Olympic Festivals. In 1989, she helped the U.S. capture a silver medal at the Junior Pan American Games before being named to the U.S. National Team, playing with the national squad through the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Bustin was selected to the USA Field Hockey s Hall of Fame Class of 2014, the first group to be inducted since 2004. A 1990 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Bustin was a four-year letterwinner (1985-88), team captain, team MVP and All-Atlantic 10 honoree, in addition to garnering a first team All-America selection and Honda-Broderick Award nomination as female athlete of the year in 1988. UMass made the NCAA Tournament in each of her four years in Amherst and advanced to the national semifinals in 1987. In the spring of 2012, Bustin was inducted into the UMass Hall of Fame.
