Quoting Lute Olson... With the way last season ended, are you looking forward to 2004-05 a bit more than usual? Yes. I think the biggest problem we had last year was that we lost some people early that really left us shorthanded. The biggest problem was that when we got a big guy in foul trouble we really didn t have a replacement in there. This year we are going to have the best depth we ve had in some time. There are some young guys, but the good thing is that they are physically ready to play. It will just be a matter of how well they fit in with the team. It must put you in a more comfortable situation to know that you have quality depth to work with in 2004-05? There were a lot of times last year where we would end up with Channing (Frye) or Hassan (Adams) on the bench for long periods of time, and that really hurt us. I don t think that s going to be a problem this year. Secondly, one of the strengths of the program has been that good depth creates a great practice situation with good everyday competition. You learn the game in practice. You really just display what you ve done, and what you can do, in games. Practices are key and I think are practices are going to be very intense. Does this offseason almost feel like a rebuilding year? It s definitely not a rebuilding year. We have everyone back with the exception of Andre (Iguodala). That position will be fine because we ll move Hassan out there, and that s really where he needs to play for his future. Plus, the guys we ve got coming in are going to be ready to help us right away. We have good flexibility with those guys. We have one guy who can play the point or the two spot. We ve two other guys who can play in the two and three positions. We have a rebounder coming in up front to go along with Channing, Kirk (Walters), and Isaiah (Fox), who is in the best shape of his life. Ivan (Radenovic) is back and will be a totally different player in his second year. I like this team. I don t think we ll be rebuilding. I think we ve plugged some holes and added some quality depth. It s going to make a huge difference. I m excited about the team. I know that all of the players and staff are excited about getting going. I think our fans realize that this could be a special team. Heading into the season with a collection of leaders like Frye, Adams, Salim Stoudamire and Mustafa Shakur must be a nice luxury? One of the big problems we faced last year was leadership because of the strength of the previous group of seniors. So it was a case of where the freshmen coming in didn t really have to do anything in terms of leadership, so that was a huge adjustment for them. I think Mustafa is going to take charge right away. Beyond that, he has experience all around him. So it s not that the point guard has to lead an inexperienced team, now it s an experienced point guard with really good players at each position. I m excited about what this team can do. I think it s going to be a team that is fun to watch. It s an aggressive, tough-minded group. Some of the newcomers that we ve got are going to add to that toughness. It will be a really good year for Wildcat basketball.
