CHEERLEADER GUIDELINES I. BASIC GUIDELINES A. All AISA schools must attend the AISA East or West summer cheerleader camp at Huntingdon College to be eligible to compete in the state cheer competition. 1. ALL summer camp rules for dance will be followed in the dance portion of the routine. a. NO pelvic thrusts (forward and backward hip movements) b. NO breast shimmy (side-to-side movement of the breast) c. NO opening of legs while on the floor or in a roll facing the audience in a suggestive manner (legs spread apart to see briefs) 2. NO glitter on any part of the body. B. ACCAA Guidelines will be followed for the competition. Coaches may download these guidelines at www.aacca.org Refer to: 2016-2017 School Cheerleading Rules. 1. Additional Restrictions for Elementary, Middle and Junior High School: a. Basket tosses, elevator tosses and similar multi-based tosses are prohibited. b. The total number of twists in a dismount cannot be greater than one and one quarter rotation. 2. Varsity squads that have 7 th, 8 th, or 9 th grade members are considered varsity, and this rule does not apply to varsity squads. (UCA follows the same guidelines at summer camp and UCA competitions.)

3. The following divisions will be held at the competition: II. III. IV. 1A Junior Varsity and Varsity 2A Junior Varsity and Varsity 3A Junior Varsity and Varsity C. All cheer squads must wear cheer uniforms and appropriate cheer shoes for the competition. PERFORMANCE AREA A. The performance area will be 42 feet X 42 feet mat. (7 strips) If this changes schools will be notified. B. Participants must begin in the competition area with at least one foot on the ground. C. Signs, megaphones, poms, flags, may be placed or dropped outside the performance area by any team member who must remain inside the competition area. TIME LIMITATION A. Each team s presentation must include a cheer or sideline chant. Teams may begin their routine from anywhere inside the competition area. B. The musical portion must NOT exceed one minute and thirty seconds. C. Total time limit for routine is two minutes and thirty seconds. D. Timing will begin with the first movement, voice, or music. MUSIC A. Teams may use an unlimited number of songs in their routine. B. Each team must provide TWO copies of the music on a CD. C. All music should be age appropriate and in good taste for the competition. Inappropriate music will result in the team disqualification.

V. UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSATANCES A. If, in the opinion of the competition officials, a team s routine is interrupted because of failure of the competition equipment, facilities, or other factors attributable to the competition rather than the team, the team affected should STOP the routine. B. The team will perform the routine again in its entirety, but will be evaluated ONLY from the point where the interruption occurred, which will be determined by the competition officials. VI. VII. TEAM FAULT A. In the event a team s routine is interrupted because of failure of the team s equipment, the team must continue the routine. B. The competition officials will determine if the team will be allowed to perform at a later time. If decided by the officials, the team will perform the routine in its entirety, but will be evaluated ONLY from the point where the interruption occurred. INJURY A. The only persons that can stop a routine for injury are: competition officials, the coach from the team, or the injured individual. B. The competition officials will determine if the team will be allowed to perform at a later time. The team may perform the routine in its entirety, but will be evaluated ONLY from the point where the interruption occurred. C. The injured participant may only return to perform when the competition officials have clearance from the medical personnel attending the participant, the parent AND THEN the coach. In an event of a concussion, the participant will NOT be allowed to return to perform.

VIII. SPORTSMANSHIP All participants, coaches, parents, and other persons with the team will conduct themselves by the AISA guidelines throughout the competition. Severe unsportsmanlike conduct is grounds of disqualification. IX. DISQUALIFICATION A. Failure to comply with ALL guidelines defined by the AISA Coaches Association will result in disqualification from the competition. B. Disqualification is at the discretion of the AISA Coaches Association and/or the competition officials. X. JUDGING CRITERIA A. All judges decisions are FINAL. B. Each score sheet is worth 100 points. C. In the event only one school is entered in a classification (1A, 2A or 3A), that team must have an average score of at least 70 points in order to be awarded the State Championship title. If the score is less than 70 there will be no championship title awarded in that classification. D. The score sheets will be added together and then averaged. E. Coaches will receive a copy of the score sheets.

DANCE GUIDELINES I. BASIC GUIDELINES A. The competition schedule will be sent out to all AISA schools after the July deadline, when the number of teams competing is determined. B. Dance teams are not required to attend any summer dance camp. At this time, the AISA does not offer a UDA summer dance camp. C. There will be ONE division for dance teams. 1. A school may enter a junior high and/or varsity team. If a school enters both teams, they will compete against each other. 2. A school may combine a junior high and a varsity team and compete as one team. 3. Awards will be held immediately following the dance division. D. NO cheerleader competing in the cheer competition may compete as a member of the school dance team. II. III. IV. PERFORMANCE AREA A. The performance area will be the floor of the Cramton Bowl Multiplex. B. There will NOT be any boundary limitations for dance teams. The center of floor will be marked. TIME LIMITATION A. Teams will have a maximum of two minutes for the routine. B. Each team must provide two copies of music on a CD. PROPS A. Props are NOT allowed. A prop is defined as anything that you dance with that is not attached to your costume. B. Articles of clothing (ex. jacket/hat/gloves) may be taken off; however, you may not dance with them. If taken off and danced with, it becomes a prop.

C. EXCEPTION Poms for the pom portion of your routine. Poms may be picked up and discarded when finished. V. CHOREOGRAPHY A. Suggestive, offensive, or vulgar choreography, and/or music is inappropriate for family audiences and therefore lacks audience appeal. B. Routine choreography should be appropriate and entertaining. Vulgar or suggestive material is defined as any movement or choreography implying something improper or indecent, appearing offensive or sexual in content, and/or relaying lewd or profane gestures or implications. C. All choreography must be age appropriate as determined by judges and AISA officials. D. All routines must include some form of three out of four of the following categories: 1. Hip Hop Should include street style movements (in good taste) with emphasis on style, execution, creativity, and body control. The uniformity of movements should complement the rhythm of music. Incorporation of jumps, jump variations, and/or floor work. 2. High Kicks Emphasis on synchronization, technique, and choreography. Each team should do a minimum of 4 kicks in this portion. 3. Jazz Incorporates stylized dance movements, formation changes, group work, leaps, and turns. 4. Pom Includes synchronization, levels, visual effects, formation changes, and proper placement of poms. Motions must be sharp and clean. Your team should look as one. E. Failure to complete three of the four categories of dance will result in disqualification.

VI. COSTUMES A. All costuming and makeup should be age appropriate and acceptable to family viewing. B. Costume malfunctions resulting in participants being exposed are grounds for disqualification. Have several dress rehearsals to work out any costume problems. C. Shoes must be worn during the competition. Dance paws are acceptable. Wearing footed tights and socks only is prohibited. D. Jewelry as part of the costume is allowed. E. Any hot pants or excessively short shorts must have tights underneath. F. The midriff must be completely covered. The midriff includes the entire midriff section from the bra line down all the way around the body. Nude body liners are acceptable. G. NO glitter on any part of the body. VII. C. Drops to the floor of any kind must first bear weight on the hands or feet in order to break the impact of the drop. D. Dance lifts are permitted - dancer(s) are lifted from the performance surface and set down. 1. A lifting dancer must maintain direct contact with the performance surface at all times. 2. A lifting dancer must have hand/arm to body contact, of the lifted dancer(s) at all times. XI. SPORTSMANSHIP A. All participants, coaches, parents, and other person with the team will conduct themselves by the AISA guidelines throughout the competition. B.
