SEPTEMBER 2018 NEWSLETTER 2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Hi All, It is with great sadness the membership bids a last farewell to one of its greatest Life Saver competitors, Dennis Green OAM BEM, Life Member of MSLSC and Australian Surf Life Saving Association. Dennis passed peacefully on Tuesday evening after a long battle with illness. Dennis joined Maroubra Surf Club in 1946 as a 15 year old and from there he was to become a sporting icon in two paddling sports. Dennis won seven Australian Open Ski & Double Ski titles between 1953-1974 and partnered with another Maroubra club mate, Barry Stuart. Dennis was made a member of the Order of Australia in 2007 for services to sport - Surf Life Saving & kayaking. As a champion kayak paddler, Dennis held over 64 Australian titles and went on to represent Australia with fellow MSLSC member Wally Brown, at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956., both gaining a Bronze medallion. He went on to further represent Australia in a total of 5 Olympic Games, an elite achievement in any part of the world. Dennis was honoured in the 1978 Munich Olympics by being selected to carry the team flag at the opening ceremony. He was awarded the AOC life membership Dennis was inducted in the Australian Surfing hall of fame in 2018, of which his Bronze plaque will forever be laid at his beloved Maroubra Beach. He was also inducted into the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame and the NSW Sporting Hall of Fame. Dennis is to this day the only sportsman to be recognised in two sports - Surf Life Saving & Kayaking in the NSW Hall of Fame. A mentor and inspiration to many Maroubra Surf Life Savers, he will be sorely missed by many, his legacy will live on at our surf club. Our deepest condolences to Shirley & the family RIP Dennis Green OAM BEM. On a brighter note. I would Ike to on behalf of the membership congratulate, John Restuccia on receiving a Life Membership award to Australian Surf Life Saving Association. This award was bestowed upon John, for his tireless efforts to Surf Life Saving Association through his work NSW SLSA & Sydney Branch. John is a Life Member of our club and fellow members know of his tremendous input into all facets of the Surf Life Saving Movement. John is only the second Maroubra member to receive this prestigious award. Congratulations John, a very well-deserved recognition of your service. The patrol season is about to commence, September 29th marks the start of our 2018 /19 season. All members would have received the patrol roster handbook by now. This season fortunately sees the increase in patrolling members with our 56 new Bronze members from last season, being allocated into patrol squads this season. Facebook has been widely active with members organising patrol swaps, this medium remains the easiest way in which members can communicate any patrol swaps required. Remember you can always contact txt the Club Captain for any concerns you have regarding fulfilment of patrols. I want to thank our Gear Steward, Fred Testard and Club Captain, Mathew Harper for organising the work required for the annual Sydney Branch gear inspection. There were plenty of members who turned up to help on the day and your assistance was greatly appreciated by the BOM. As a club we faired extremely well, rating into the high 90's for our presentation of our rescue gear to the inspectors. The inspection team were full of praise for preparation and readiness of our equipment. Please follow the Surf Sports program for training and carnival dates. Maroubra will be sending a contingent of competitors to the World Life Saving Titles in Adelaide in November. Please see Surf Sports Director if you have further interest.

Nippers registration, is in full swing and positions have been filling fast. Under the leadership of Nipper Director, John Georgas the team have been working very diligently to ensure this season is a success for all our junior members. The 2018 Ski trip was a massive weekend and a great time was had by all who attended. The snow for the second year in a row was simply amazing. I want to thank all those electable to attend as this is the Board of Managements endeavour to thank you for your 100% attendance of your rostered patrols last season. Lastly, congratulation to Andrew "Pineapple" O Sullivan, who won a Gold medal at the NSW SLSA Board Riding Championships this week. Still ripping in the over 50's division. Good luck to everyone this season, have fun on the beach, Stay safe. If you are unable to renew & pay online you can also come to the office to pay fees during office hours. If fees are not paid by the 30th September you will be deemed un-financial and your club access will be removed. It is important fees a paid on time to ensure you are covered by SLSA insurance. You should not be patrolling if you are not financial.

35 YEARS TO LIFE LUNCH On Sunday 23rd September at 12 noon we will be holding a lunch for all our 35 years and over members, and for all life members as well as a few special guests. This is planned as a thank you and social day for long term members and will be held just before the start of the season at the Surf club. If you are in the above group and would like to come along please contact Frankie our secretary secretary@maroubraslsc.com.au. OFFICE HOURS The office will be open 8am-10am on Sunday 23 September, before the 35 years to Life Members Lunch. The office will change to Saturday open hours during the season, as it is too crowded on a Sunday morning when Nippers are running. Hours will still be 8am-10am. OFFICE ADMINISTRATION - WE NEED YOUR HELP ON SATURDAY MORNINGS We are looking for a few members to help me run the office on Saturday mornings between 8am- 10am. No experience required as I am more than happy to help you build some skills in that area, but equally welcome are experienced administrators. This wouldn t involve a commitment of more than one session per month, but if you want to do more that can be accommodated. Candidates don t need to be bronzies either so if you have a relative that would like to help the club but isn t able to patrol, let them know. To volunteer or for more information please contact Frankie Bryant at secretary@maroubraslsc.com.au or on 0411 691 601. CLOTHING COORDINATOR - WE NEED YOUR HELP ON SUNDAY MORNINGS We are looking for a few members to help with our clothing and merchandise sales on Sunday mornings. If you can help or have an interest in looking after our club merchandise sales on Sunday mornings or would like to find out more please contact Linda Hession at membership@maroubraslsc.com.au. MESSAGE FROM THE CLUB CAPTAIN Dear Members - As the start of patrol season fast approaches, I would like to welcome you all to the 2018/2019 season. I hope you are all looking forward getting back onto the beach. The BOM and lifesaving committee have spent the off-season making sure that the club has the best facilities and equipment to offer our members. This season see s the club s patrols take to the beach with a brand-new ATV, Oxy Resus kits, defibs, training equipment and rescue boards. Please make sure we all look after this equipment as best as possible. The club has also been approached to assist Garie beach this year with patrols along with all other Sydney Clubs. Maroubra will be doing patrols on the following days. Saturday 12 January, Saturday 2 March and Saturday 28 March. Please pencil one of more of these dates into your diary. It is always a great weekend down the coast. More info will be released closer to the dates. Bronze training is about to commence and all the trainers need help from our membership. If you are interested in assisting please get into contact with Paul, our CTO. Finally, if you have any problems on patrol or require further info etc., please get into contact with the Club Captain or Vice-Captain. Regards Mathew Harper COMMUNICATION CHECK OUT OUR WEBSITE FOR CLUB INFORMATION We encourage all members to check out our website for the latest news and calendar updates, go to http://www.maroubraslsc.com.au/calendar

DOWNLOAD MAROUBRA SLSC TEAM APP Maroubra SLSC Team APP - This is where members can communicate with their fellow members. Access groups are set up for patrol teams and training groups. This is where you have access to the most up to date training information and club social events. The App is also where you can order club clothing, swimwear, merchandise, start chat groups, locate Surf carnival information and club events will be advertised via the App. You can also buy tickets to club events via the App See below the Team App brochure which will show you how to download the team app to your mobile phone. When you sign up you will be asked some basic information then to choose the access groups that you are interested in. We have many access groups including board or ski training, Nippers training, Patrol groups, club races etc. Choose only those access groups that you are interested or participate in so you get tailored messages and notices to only these events. If you don t have a mobile you can also look at the Team App on your computer at https://maroubraslsc.teamapp.com/ but you won t receive text message notices. COURSES Any education course enquiries please email our Chief Instructor Paul O Donohue education@maroubraslsc.com.au FIRST AID COURSE We will be holding a First Aid course for members on 23rd of September at the seals club from 8.30am-5.00pm. You will need to meet at the surf club to register for the meet and walk across to the seals club on the day. If you are interested, please contact our Chief Instructor education@maroubraslsc.com.au by 13 September. The cost is $70. You will also need a Unique Student Identification number and details on how to apply will also be sent after registration. SRC COURSE Will commence 7th or 10th October, please contact our chief instructor for more information. SRC TO BRONZE RAPID COURSE Rapid Bronze course for existing SRC members will start on 12th of September for candidates who will be 15 years old by 11th of October (the assessment date). This course is targeted to existing SRC members who wish to compete. We are seeking expressions of interest from members to participate in this Rapid Bronze course. This course is the fastest and most efficient way for eligible members to achieve their Bronze Medallion. The course is conducted over 3-4 weeks, rather than the usual 8-10 weeks. This is possible because the candidate's prior learning and experience is recognized in fulfilling the requirements and the course is more intensive over the shorter duration. It is also an excellent way for competitors to achieve their surf award eligibility ready for the new season.

In our experience candidates enjoy the course as well, activities are often more engaging and there is more time for fun with an experienced squad. As part of the course, we also complete the Provide First Aid award (HLTAID003). This industry award is highly valued inside and outside of Surf Life Saving and is a strong addition to members professional resumes. To be eligible candidates must: be confident and willing to engage in the training squad activities fully; be proficient in SRC; have completed SRC less than 3 years ago; and be 15 years old by the date of final assessment (11 October 2018 scheduled assessment date). In recognition of your service and potential future contribution, the Club has decided to subsidize participant fees for this course. The course fee will be $170 (includes two awards, Bronze Medallion and Provide First Aid (HLTAID003)). Please confirm your interest in this course by email to education@maroubraslsc.com.au If you have any questions, please email education@maroubraslsc.com.au or speak directly to Paul O Donohue (Chief Instructor) on 0411 987 816 or Phil Carter (Trainer) on 0406 959 196. PUBLIC BRONZE COURSE Join Now The Public Bronze course will start on Wednesday 10th of October 2018 at 6.30pm with an induction evening held at the Club house. If you know anyone who is interested completing their Bronze medallion or SRC Certificate and would like to complete their Bronze Medallion please ask them to contact our Chief instructor asap. JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT NEWS NIPPERS UPDATE Our Junior Development Nippers season is almost a month away from commencing with a high number of junior members already registered and completed their proficiency swims. Registration & Proficiency Swims Our Registrations will remain open until 11pm on Thursday 20 th September 2018. If you haven t registered online, please don t wait as we won t be taking any late applications this season. Also, the last chance Proficiency Swims will be held at The Seals Club pool from 1.00pm 4.00pm on Saturday 22 nd and Sunday 23 rd September. It s important that you attend between any of these times, otherwise our junior members cannot be involved in any water activities. Also, please note that we won t be holding any further pool swims following this date. Parent Support Our Junior Development program is only successful when we have our parents actively involved. Our parents can support the program in a variety of ways which include but aren t limited to; 1. Age Managers ensure our junior members develop the required lifesaving and surf skills 2. Age Assistants assist the age manager in facilitating activities 3. Age Liaison Managers answer parent queries, delegate age tasks, promote upcoming events, assists parents and families into the club 4. Water Safety who ensure we can enter the water. a. In general, for every 5 children we need 1 water safety personnel to ensure we remain compliant. b. For those parents keen to be in the water then I would suggest look to complete your bronze.

c. For those returning parents, or our skilled non-active members we would welcome your skill sets. 5. Skills Trainers assist Age Managers in fine tuning surf or lifesaving skills 6. BBQ Coordinator to facilitate the BBQ as it is our greatest fund raiser for the junior development program 7. BBQ Workers to man the BBQ and ensure our families are being fed. 8. Officials to attend any carnival each club needs to provide a number of officials to compete. a. If we don t meet those requirements then we don t get to compete. b. For those parents keen then you only need to be an award member of the club and with c. carnivals you have the best seat in the house. It s also important that our families feel part of the club. As such we request that at least one parent or guardian joins Maroubra SLSC as a General member. Details can be found on the club website. Return of Equipment If any junior member currently has a nippers board or other equipment could you please make arrangements to return by emailing nippers@maroubraslsc.com.au to arrange a time. Note that we will also have Junior Development Committee members down the beach on Sunday 9 th September from 9am who can take the equipment off your hands. Pre-Season Meeting We will be holding a pre-season meeting for those looking to take on any of the above roles where we will present our program and finalise any lastminute requirements. At this stage this meeting hasn t been scheduled but it looks like it will be held the weekend prior to season starting. Date, time and venue will be confirmed in the next week. Season Start Our season will commence on Sunday 7 th October with start times to be confirmed. At this stage we are looking to change the season around with split starting times with proposed start times being: Under 6 to Under 8 Start 8am (1 hour sessions) Under 9 to Under 13 Start 9am (1.5 hour sessions) Under 14 Start 9am (Rookie SRC Program) We will send communication confirming our starting times. To ensure everyone is aware of what we are doing and also to welcome you all to Maroubra SLSC, whilst our junior members are off with their age managers, we would welcome all New and Returning parents to the clubhouse as we would like to showcase our season ahead. We will also be conducting a quick training program for our parents as well. Training Sessions For those wanting to improve their skills, then it is strongly recommended that you look to further training sessions. By attending Sunday activities is a great starting point, our junior members will gain greater confidence and improved skills by attending these extra training sessions which are catered for different skill levels. Communication It s important that we communicate with our members. As such we will be looking to provide relevant information to those. For general club information we utilise newsletter along with social media. SurfGuard Email and SMS) is used as our general communications platform to interact with our members. We have also established nipper email addresses for any direct or relevant queries: Director of Junior Development nippers@maroubraslsc.com.au

It was a quiet drive back Maroubra with some exhausted faces. Big thanks to our bus driver Murray and our awesome band of men on the chain gang (Dave, Steve, Nick, Peter, Mat, Joel and Danny) yes there was so much snow we had to put chains on the bus! Big thanks to Mat Harper, Dave Love and Nick for helping me with the chaperoning. We had tired but happy kids coming back on the bus on Sunday with more than a few stories to tell and I sure they will all be back again next year! Thanks to the BOM for supporting and Linda and Sue for all the organising. Thank you all, Sarah Goldrick Last month just over 60 Maroubra Surf club members attended our annual Ski Trip to Perisher. It was great to see our youth getting involved, with our biggest youth turn out ever, it was sure to be a fun weekend. The idea behind the ski trip is to reward our members particularly our youth, for doing 100% patrol attendance, so get those swaps sorted and aim to get 100% attendance this season so you too can attend this awesome trip next year! Come on you know you want to! Just ask any of the 60 who attended they will all tell you it was a great trip. We were rewarded with some of the best powder snow conditions Australia had to offer, the skiing and boarding was just awesome. An excellent day of riding, some had lessons, others took on Guthega or Mt P we all made it back to the bus in the afternoon all in one piece. After a pit stop at the local shops for some supplies we headed back to the sport and rec camp at Jindabyne for a great dinner and a few stories. Day two it was on again more snow was in the predictions and mother nature didn t disappoint, as it was coming down thick and fast, tree runs were the call of the day and Guthega didn t disappoint, some sweet powder to be found. Some of the young guns hiked up to double trouble and said it was just the best. Maree tried her hand at snow shoeing which sounded really cool. Danny broke his poles at Interceptor, we kept losing Will and Ryan, Chris lost is snowboard. I think we all needed a bit of fireball that day! Such a great day! It was dark before we got back to lodges, another great dinner, it s always great when you don t have to cook, then it was time to let our hair down just a little bit and I think everyone had a bit of fun on

MAROUBRA LEGENDS NORM COWDRY Norm Cowdry is a Life Member of our club and has been our club registrar for more than 30 years. For those of you who don t know what a registrar does; in simple terms he inputs the patrol records throughout the season and keeps our membership records up to date. He is our record keeper and membership go to guy. This was a much more manual process when Norm started doing this. He must be one of the longest serving committee members of our club. (Norm you might want to confirm that statement!) Norm is a wealth of knowledge within our club and is always on hand to help or lend advice whenever needed. Thank you, Norm. Alison was one of the first) and nipper parents gaining their Bronze and becoming full patrolling members. What would be your one piece of advice to our younger or new members? All members should find an area of the Club they are interested in and become involved and not just do patrols. This way you can make friends which can last for the rest of your life. When and how did you come to join Maroubra SLSC? I first joined the Club in 1958 with a friend from school. I remember Dennis Green timed us for the swim test at the Mahon Pool. What was your surf sports event? I was not a competitor but went in Club races on Sunday mornings where we had lots of fun, met other members as well as helping keep fit. What positions have you held over your time at the club? Positions I have held include Club Secretary, Treasurer, Gear Stewart, Membership Registrar and Patrol Registrar (for the last 30 years). What are some of the highlights of your time in Maroubra SLSC? One highlight in my time was watching the Maroubra Club Team (which included my son, Glenn) win the Taplin Relay at the Australian Championships for the first and only time in 1996. Important changes I have seen were the admission of females into the Club (my daughter
