COMMANDER S MESSAGE Since returning from Texas, both Patsy and I have been running at full tilt. As we frequently tell each other, "The problem with retirement, is that there are no days off!" Since we can schedule stuff every day, we do. Even my fun job at West Marine was more intense than I like this year. But that intense activity causes problems, such as not getting the boat in until after Memorial Day for the last three years. As a guy who usually tried to launch almost at ice-out, it can be maddening. But given the choices of my overactive life style or doing less, I'll take the former 9 times out of 10. It's just so alive! But every once in awhile I do get "extra crispy" and need some type of break. Speaking of alive, June is when our squadron s ship s telegraph rings forward to "full ahead". Our overachieving little group goes into a frenzy of fun activities. Vessel Safety Checks begin now; Kayaking on the 1st; the Flare Shoot arriving next week; the Egg Harbor shakedown cruise; VHF Seminar; our summer kickoff Cook-Out at Sunset Park; and a Weather Seminar all are happening this month. A rich collection of interesting and fun events to suit every and all tastes. And that's just this month; July and August also promise a wide variety of choices. Check out the calendar. So, can you do everything? Probably not, I'll be the first to tell you that a balanced life is important. But with all the offerings available there is something that should appeal to every member. So look through the list, get your vessel safety check, and enjoy some parts of the squadron experience this month. As John Masefield has penned: "...I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by..." Fair Winds, Bob ANNUAL FLARE SHOOT AND FIRE EXTINGUISHER PRACTICE SATURDAY, JUNE 8 1:00 P.M. STURGEON BAY YACHT CLUB Surely by Saturday, the 8 th of June, we can expect better weather! By 1300 (1:00 pm) the skies should be clear and the sun warm on our backs. Well, we can wish! Plan to bring your expired flares and meteors to the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club and join us in practice firing. Or just dump them with us for disposal and get rid of a fire hazard. Learn how to use the smoke and VDS flares safely. Afterwards, the SBFD will set some tough fires for us to put out with marine style dry powder extinguishers. There s nothing like actually pulling the trigger on one of these devices to prepare one for the most feared emergencies afloat fire on board. Members of the Fire Department will offer helpful tips and guide your efforts. Don t miss it this year!!!!!!! SEO Alan Wentworth PAGE 2

FROM THE SQUADRON EDUCATION OFFICER Hello everyone. I am happy to report that both piloting students passed with flying colors! Mark your calendars for the summer seminars that will be coming up starting next month with Chuck Stone s VHF Radio Seminar and Alan Wentworth s popular weather seminar. The headline in Sunday s Green Bay Press Gazette was concerning alcohol related boating accidents in Wisconsin. Wisconsin has a serious alcohol problem that links sporting and recreational activities to drinking. Our Power Squadron is a leader in teaching safety at sea. We need to address the dangers of boating and alcohol consumption at all of our functions in the same manner that we address wearing personal flotation devices.. Drivers on our highways are changing their habits due to a combination of education and enforcement. We can certainly play a role in helping to educate boaters so they can have fun without negative consequences. I would like to know how you feel about this issue and would like to hear from everyone about how we can address this issue. Don t forget the upcoming flare shoot at the Yacht Club on June 8 th. This is a great opportunity to learn to use your flares and to dispose of the old ones properly. I hope to see you on the water practicing what we have learned in the classroom! CRUISE UPDATES CALLING ALL PADDLERS This summer our squadron will be hosting impromptu paddling events for member kayakers and canoeists at various locations throughout the county. Most trips will be two hours or less. If you would like to be notified about these events, please contact Nancy Reichmann at 419-509-4321 or oboenancy@aol.com. CRUISE TO EGG HARBOR Sunday, June 9. Scuttlebutt May Quiz Answer Zulu is short for Zulu time, which is used by the military and in navigation generally as a term for Universal Coordinated Time (UTC). On 15 May at 2:00 p.m. in Door County, what will be the Zulu time? Answer: In October 1884 the Greenwich Meridian was selected by delegates (41 delegates representing 25 nations) to the International Meridian Conference held in Washington, D.C. to be the common zero of longitude and standard of time reckoning throughout the world. The coordinated universal time (UTC) at the Greenwich Meridian is 6 time zones east of Door County. However, due to Daylight Saving Time, Door County is one hour later. Therefore, at 2:00 p.m. (in May), UTC-or Zulu -time is 7:00 p.m., or 1900. Alan Wentworth was the first to submit the correct answer, followed by John Reichmann. Where was this picture taken? Scuttlebutt June Quiz Credit for the photo will be given with the answer in the July newsletter. Send your answers to the Scuttlebutt Editor dolores.e.hermann@gmail.com. Correct answers will appear in the May issue. Commander Cdr.
