Well done to Nicole R for all her hard work in making this happen. The mirror is made of polished aluminium and lays flat on the bottom of the pool, giving swimmers instant visual feedback on their stroke technique. ooo Trinity College has recently given the club use of a shipping container to store equipment. This is located inside the fenced area at the deep end of the pool, and will be used to consolidate the storage of items that are currently located in various cupboards around the STARplex complex. ooo A quick poll to see who reads the newsletter and what format you prefer it in? The first 15 people to email Tracy Jordan (officialling@starplexswi mclub.org.au) with their name and preferred format (email, online, paper) will receive a Freddo Frog. One, two, three. GO! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! FOCUS ON Swimming! A highly unrecognized sport which requires one to be up at absurd hours of the day and in the pool multiple times during the day. The season lasts all year (12 months) for real swimmers. It makes the women look like men, and the men look really hot, even when they shave their legs. Results from January meets Quite a few STARplex swimmers took advantage of meets held in early January, travelling to Berri, Strathalbyn, Quorn and Henley & Grange for the jetty to jetty swim. P A G E 4 THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS 4 keys to success for sprinters From swimswam.com Platinum Every swimmer knows the most successful swimmers are also the most confident swimmers. Sprint freestyle races, like any other race, require a lot of confidence in order to be successful particularly because there is no room for error! A slow start, missed flipturn, or goofy breath can throw off the entire race. Confidence is crucial for sprinting and it is something that you can t fake, which makes racing under high pressure extremely difficult sometimes. Here are some tricks to ultimate spring success from one of the very best, UW Badger Sprint Queen Ivy Martin: Silver 1. Draw confidence from your training. I know I work hard every day in practice, so thinking about successful sets and the training I have accomplished gives me confidence going in to big meets. 2. Lose yourself in the meet. My coach always talks about losing yourself in the meet, and I think that s really important. He means taking everything in, surrounding yourself with your teammates and positive energy, limiting distractions, and allowing yourself to be passionate and excited about where you are and what you re doing. I love feeling the adrenaline I get from losing myself in the energy of the meet. It is important to remember that your energy rubs off on your teammates and vice versa too, so surround yourself with good teammates and feed off of one another. Being a good teammate will always help you be more successful! Partners 3. Manage your nerves. I get nervous before I swim. I think that everyone does, but it s important to manage those nerves. It is easy to feel the pressure, but you have to remember that the race is nothing you can t handle! When I am behind the blocks I know that I don t need to be amazing; I have to do what I know how to do and the training and the work put in will take care of the rest! 4. Don t doubt yourself. Dealing with self-doubt is definitely a challenge when I feel pressure, but it s important to recognize that those negative thoughts are only nerves trying to get the best of you. Don t believe your doubts; don t even let them in to your head. Only believe the best in yourself. Challenges are what makes life interesting. Overcoming them is what makes life meaningful S T A R P L E X S W I M C L U B
V O L U M E 2, I S S U E 2 P A G E 5 STARplex Club Carnival The STARplex Short Course carnival for 14 & Unders is being held at STARplex on Saturday 5 March. Entries are now open for online entry through the link on the club website and close 9am on 20 February. Make sure you come along and support the carnival as it is not only a major fundraiser for the club, but an opportunity to show the swimming community how great our club is. The Carnival is open to Come and Try swimmers - these are swimmers who are not a member of a club. If you know of anyone that would like to come along and see what competitive swimming is about, then invite them to come along and enter the four 50m events. Entry for Come and Try swimmers is free. As usual, we will be looking for volunteers to official and help with catering closer to the time. We would love to see as many older swimmers there as possible to support the younger swimmers and help out where they can. Amanda Phillips and Karen Hilton have kindly offered to run the raffle and are looking for donations of prizes. If you have anything you can donate, please let them know as soon as possible. We will also be looking for lane sponsors at $100 per lane, and event sponsors at $20 per event. Forms will be put in pockets soon. Hope to see you there!
