Since the first day classes began in 1855 with two faculty members and ten students, Northwestern has grown into one of the most recognized intellectual communities both nationally and internationally. A charter member of the Big Ten and the conference s only private institution, Northwestern is currently home to over 16,000 students and is the alma mater for approximately 190,000 alumni.
