Faceoff at Berry Events Center is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EST both nights. RADIO This weekend s games, and all MSU home and road games, can be heard live on WVFN-AM 730 The Fan. Play-by-play man Scott Moore, in his fourth season as the radio voice of MSU hockey, will call the action. Spartan volunteer assistant coach Jim Mullin provides color commentary for the second straight season. Selected MSU contests will also be broadcast in the Detroit metro area on WDFN-AM 1130 The Fan. The 2000-01 campaign marks the first time MSU regular-season hockey contests can be heard in Detroit. Spartan fans can also hear live play-by-play action of MSU hockey via the Internet. Broadcasts can be accessed by logging on to www.msuspartans.com, the official website of Spartan athletics, or www.espn.com. TELEVISION Neither game will be televised in the greater Lansing area. MSU HEAD COACH RON MASON MSU head coach Ron Mason (St. Lawrence 64) is in his 22nd season with the Spartans and 35th year as a college hockey mentor. The winningest coach in college hockey history, Mason, has piloted the Spartans to a 596-258-64 (.684) mark since taking over for the legendary Amo Bessone in 1979. His overall record currently stands at 885-368-78 (.694). Mason recently reached a pair of milestones when he coached in his 700th CCHA regular-season game and posted his 400th regular-season conference win behind the Spartan bench during the Spartans two-game sweep Jan. 19-20 vs. Miami. He guided MSU to its second NCAA hockey championship in 1986 and his 20 NCAA Tournament appearances are an all-time record. The seven-time Central Collegiate Hockey Association Coach of the Year led the Spartans to league regular-season titles in 1985, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1998 and 1999 and CCHA playoff crowns in 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1998 and 2000. The league honored Mason by renaming the CCHA playoff trophy in his honor last fall. Mason, who won the Spencer Penrose Award as national coach of the year in 1992, has coached 19 Spartans to All-American honors and seen 44 of his former MSU skaters move on to the NHL. NORTHERN MICHIGAN AT A GLANCE (11-8-7 overall, 7-7-6 CCHA) THE COACH: Northern Michigan coach Rick Comley (Lake Superior State 72) is in his 25th season with the Wildcats and 28th as a head coach. The only head coach in Northern Michigan hockey history, Comley enters the week with a 564-458-69 (.549) overall record and a 505-412-66 (.547) with the Wildcats. Comley, who played under Ron Mason at Lake Superior State and was an assistant at LSSU in 1972-73, took over as the Lakers bench boss after Mason departed for Bowling Green in 1973. Comley currently ranks seventh on college hockey s all-time wins list, having past Michigan Tech s legendary John MacInnes (555 wins) earlier this season. He guided NMU to a national title in 1991 and earned the Spencer Penrose Award as the nation s top college hockey coach in 1980 and 1991. He also led Lake Superior State to an NAIA national championship.

NMU is 6-3-4 in Marquette this season compared to just 5-5-3 on the road. Sophomore defenseman Jimmy Jackson paces NMU rearguards in points with 4-16--20. The Wildcats have gone with a goaltender-by-committee approach as senior Dan Ragusett and freshman Craig Kowalski have shared time between the pipes. MSU-NMU NOTES The weekend series at Northern Michigan is the start of a month that has the Spartans playing six of eight games away from East Lansing. This weekend s pair of games with the Wildcats in Marquette mark the Spartans first trip to the Berry Events Center, which opened last year. MSU makes its first visit to another new venue later this month as the Spartans travel to Ohio State s Value City Arena Feb. 23-34. Despite playing 13 games against Northern Michigan since the Wildcats rejoined the CCHA in 1997, this weekend s series is just the third and fourth time the Spartans have played in Marquette. MSU comes into the NMU series unbeaten in 11 road games. The Spartans are 9-0-2 in an opponent s building so far this season, the best road start in school history and the third longest road unbeaten streak on the Spartan record books. The longest was a 13- game stretch from Dec. 26, 1998-Feb. 26, 1999, during which MSU was 9-0-4. Freshman defenseman Joe Markusen (Grafton, N.D.) returns to the MSU lineup against NMU this weekend. He was given a mandatory one-game suspension after drawing a fighting major and a game misconduct in the Spartans 3-0 win vs. Lake Superior State on Jan. 23. SATURDAY S RECAP It had to end sometime. Michigan s Andy Hilbert scored with 1:57 left in overtime to lead the Wolverines to a 4-3 win over MSU in front of 19,618 at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit Saturday. The loss brought to an end the 23-game Spartan unbeaten streak and while allowing Michigan to close to within three points of the Spartans for first place in the CCHA standings. Hilbert took a feed from teammate Mark Kosick and broke into the MSU zone on the near side. He was knocked to the ice by the Spartans Brad (Fort St. John, B.C.) as he turned the corner toward the MSU net but managed to bat the puck past Miller to bring the see-saw game to a close. The Spartans opened the scoring with the first period s only goal. Rustyn Dolyny (Fort Frances, Ont.) took a feed from teammate Damon Whitten (Brighton, Mich.) and blasted a shot from the top of the far face-off circle past Michigan netminder Josh Blackburn at 6:16. Michigan jumped ahead with the first two goals of the second period. Josh Langfeld tallied 2:17 into the frame, ending Miller s shutout streak at 229:29 in the process, and John Shouneyia scored a little more than 10 minutes later, swatting a rebound off his own shot past Miller at 12:39. Sophomore Troy Ferguson (Kitchener, Ont.) squared the game at 3-3 at 15:51 of the second period. Dolyny gloved a Wolverine clearing attempt in the Michigan zone and played it ahead to Ferguson, who beat Blackburn for his first goal of the season. MSU took a 3-2 lead into the dressing room with a late second-period goal by defenseman Jon Insana (New Baltimore, Mich.). Insana reeled in a cross-ice feed from Bogle and unleashed a rocket from just inside the blue line. The puck hit Blackburn and wobbled across the goal line with 57 seconds left in the period. The lead was short-lived, however, as Mike Cammalleri evened the score on a goal 1:14 into the third period. Miller, who gave up four goals after allowing a total of four markers in his last eight starts, made 32 saves for Michigan State. Blackburn stopped 23 shots for the Wolverines. The Spartans unbeaten streak ended at 23 (20-0-3) with Saturday s loss vs. Michigan, tying the school record in that category. MSU also posted a 23-game unbeaten streak by reeling off an 18-0-5 stretch from Dec. 4, 1998-March 5, 1999 en route to a berth in the NCAA Frozen Four. Coincidentally, the MSU men s basketball team win streak was snapped at 23 games earlier this month when Indiana defeated the Spartans, 59-58, on Jan. 7. MSU also saw its season-high winning streak end at 10 games with Saturday s loss. The Spartans have posted 10-game winning streaks in each of the last three seasons. The loss to Michigan was MSU s first defeat away from Munn Ice Arena this season. The Spartans entered the Saturday contest with a 9-0-2 road record and a 3-0-1 mark in neutral-site games. The Michigan defeat was the Spartans first in CCHA cluster play this season. MSU currently holds a 7-1-0 mark against cluster foes Lake Superior State, Michigan and Northern Michigan. Saturday s defeat was the first for MSU s senior class against Michigan at Joe Louis Arena. This year s crop of seniors entered Saturday s game with a 5-0-1 mark against the Wolverines in Detroit. MSU s last loss to Michigan at Joe Louis Arena prior to Saturday occurred on March 15, 1997, when the Wolverines handed the Spartans a 3-1 defeat in the CCHA championship game. Sophomore goaltender Ryan Miller, who posted five shutouts in January, gave up four goals against Michigan Saturday after allowing four goals in his previous eight starts dating back to MSU s matchup with Boston College in the first round of the Great Lakes Invitational Dec. 29. Miller s career-best scoreless streak, which began Jan. 14 at Lake Superior State, came to an end Saturday at 229:29 when Michigan s Josh Langfeld scored 2:17 into the second period. Despite the loss to Michigan, Miller still finished the month of January with a 6-1-0 record, a 0.70 goals against average and a.974 saves percentage. Jon Insana s goal late in the second period ended a 15-game scoreless streak for the junior defenseman, who last put his name on the scoresheet with an assist in MSU s 3-2 win over Minnesota on Nov. 24. After tallying just one assist in MSU s first 20 games, sophomore forward Troy Ferguson has 1-4--5 in the team s last seven outings. Sophomore defenseman John-Michael has not scored a point in six straight games, matching a career-long scoring drought for the sophomore defenseman. was previously held scoreless for a half-dozen games from Oct. 29-Nov. 13, 1999. and defensive partner Brad, the team s plus/minus rating leaders prior to Saturday s game, were a combined -6 vs. the Wolverines Saturday. MSU held Michigan scoreless on both its power-play opportunities Saturday. The Spartans have killed 32 straight penalties dating back to the third period of the Great Lakes Invitational championship game vs. Michigan Tech in Detroit on Dec. 30. Saturday s announced attendance of 19,618 at Joe Louis Arena marked the largest crowd to watch a hockey game in North American that night. It s the sixth straight time that an MSU-UM regular-season contest has attracted more than 19,000 fans to the Joe. Bogle, who has 8-7--15 on the year, needed just 24 games this season to reached single-season highs in goals, assists and points. GOOD ANDY Junior defenseman Andrew Hutchinson continues his torrid offensive output from the blueline for the Spartans. The Rochester Hills, Mich., native, who assisted on MSU s third goal Saturday vs. Michigan and was +3 in the loss to the Wolverines, has scored at least one point in eight of the Spartans last 10 contests and is 3-6--9 during that span. Hutchinson leads MSU rearguards in scoring with 3-14--17 on the season. He was third among Spartan skaters in points in January with 1-6--7. Although the PWR does not precisely duplicate the method used by the selection committee, the PWR has exactly predicted the NCAA Tournament field in each of the last three years. HOW IT WORKS The PWR compares teams at or above.500, judging them by five criteria: record against common opponents, record in last 16 games, head-to-head competition, record against other teams at or above.500, and the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI). The RPI takes results from games between two teams that each play 20 or more games against Division I opponents and from them, produces a statistical rating. Factors involved are the team s winning percentage, the average winning percentage of the team s opponents, and the average winning percentage of the team s opponents opponents. These factors are multiplied by 35%, 50%, and 15% respectively. Remember the RPI is just one part of the PWR. For each head-to-head comparison won, a team receives one point. The final PWR ranking is based upon the number of points won against teams at or above.500. Ties are settled by the RPI. WHAT IT MEANS Remember, the PWR is not used by the NCAA selection committee to determine the tournament field. However, the raw data that is combined to form the PWR is utilized by the selection group to determine who makes the tournament and who doesn t. Basically, the PWR is an overview of what the selection committee looks at when deciding which teams get at-large bids and which don t. WHO GETS IN The playoff champion in five leagues the CCHA, ECAC, HOCKEY EAST, MAAC and WCHA all receive automatic berths in the NCAA Tournament. That leaves seven at-large bids for the selection committee to hand out in mid-march. WHO S LEFT OUT For the most part, the top 12 teams in the PWR over the last three years have been part of the NCAA Tournament field. However, the selection committee has the wherewithal to override statistical comparisons in cases where the numbers don t tell the whole story. For example, MAAC member Quinnipiac was not invited to the NCAA Tournament last year despite a top-10 PWR rating because its winning percentage and strength of schedule numbers were skewed high. IS IT BETTER THAN THE BCS? Yes. It s based solely on facts head-to-head record, strength of schedule, record over the last 16 games, and so on. There are no elements of the weekly polls involved. And no one benefits by running up the score, so MSU s 3-2 win over Notre Dame in October means no more or no less than the Wolverines 9-0 win over the Fighting Irish earlier this week. THE PWR IS KEEPING ME UP AT NIGHT AND GIVING ME A HEADACHE. DO I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT? If you re a fan of a team in the top eight of the PWR, then probably not. If you follow a MAAC or CHA school or a team in spots nine through 15, then you might want to keep an eye on it. But remember, there is still about a month left in the regular season anything can happen. Your team could also win its conference s playoff championship, rendering this entire discussion moot.
