Writing Targets LO: I can use a dictionary to check spellings and meanings of unfamiliar words Example: Identify the audience and purpose before writing and use other similar writing models for my own writing I can select appropriate grammar and vocabulary to change or improve meaning Précis longer passages Use a range of cohesive devices across paragraphs When sentences, ideas, and details fit together clearly, readers can follow along easily. Some devices: repetition of key terms and synonyms. The problem with contemporary art is that it is not easily understood by most people. Contemporary art is deliberately abstract, and that means it leaves the viewer wondering what she is looking at. 8

9 I can perform compositions using appropriate intonation, volume and movement so that the meaning is clear I can use expanded noun phrases to convey complicated information concisely The black and brown, sharp toothed, hunting dog crouched ready to pounce. (How) The kite flew over the tall trees. (Where) Yesterday the kite flew.(when) I can use ellipsis The kite flew because I let go of the string. (Why) 10

11 To add extra information without distracting too much from the main idea you can add it between brackets Everybody stood up when she (the teacher) entered the room. Use brackets, dashes and commas to indicate parenthesis When we wish to provide additional information and emphasize it, we use a pair of dashes I stopped writing - had I heard something outside - and went to the window. If we do not wish to draw too much attention to the extra information, we can use a pair of commas. Tom, the captain of the team, was a very brave player. A big-city project. (A project on a big city not a big project on a city.) I can use hyphens to avoid ambiguity in my writing

12 I can use semi-colons, colons and dashes between independent clauses When we get there - if we get there - I'll have something to say to him about his confounded map. I can punctuate bullet points consistently

Reading Targets LO I can use my knowledge of root words, prefixes and suffixes to read aloud and understand new words I can make comparisons within and across books Example I can read a range of modern fiction, from literary heritage and from other cultures and traditions I can identify and discuss themes and conventions across a wide range of writing I can summarise ideas drawn from more than one paragraphs, identifying key details I can recognise how language, structure and presentation add to the meaning. 13
